Geocaching
Anyone every heard of Geocaching? I tried it this weekend after reading about it in Backpacker Magazine. It's a great game to play with your GPS. Check it out at www.geocaching.com.

RE: Geocaching
Heard a story on PBS that said geocaching.com was going bust. Anything to it?

RE: Geocaching
If the previous poster was referring to the 21 responses to my Perfect Secret Campsites thread, I object. Beat to death would be the following mostly off topic:
Joke Swappin' 305 posts,
China is our Enemy 155 posts,
State Roll Call 190 posts,
and the whopper, Quote for the Day 1229 posts.
In response to Gecko, I've tried it, and it's kind of fun, but really tends to be more of an urban activity than backpacking.

RE: Geocaching
I have hidden two and found two. I hid my caches in the woods at least one mile from any road. I supposed there are urban caches, but since I bought my GPS for navigation in the woods and on the water that is where I hide my stuff. I got a Dave Mathews CD from the one I found yesterday. I left a sewing kit. Both of the caches I found were covered with vegetation. This might be a hobby where a dog actually comes in handy. I assume a dog would detect the human smell. I had to rely on my expert woodsmanship to find them.

Google it and your area, Mapes.

I hoped to get 500 finds before the end of 2007, but actual winter snow in my area messed that up. Went something like 3 for 15 in Rochester the other day. EEEK! "Winter friendly" isn't always so. LOL! I'm at 487 or something. Will do a quick stop at an event Saturday for a quick "find."

You been at it, chili? Hey, you'll love this. I bought a used Palm - am going PAPERLESS!! ;-P It seems to work slick, but I need to learn a whole lot more about how to set up categories, etc. It makes use of pocket queries (with a premium geocaching membership), GSAK and Cachemate.

OHhhh... and Minnesota State Parks are having a big geocaching promotion this year for their 150th anniversary. No details out to the public yet, but I am hooked up with maintaining the official cache for the promotion in my local state park. YEAH!!! Should be fun.... It's a good plan, in a state where parks didn't even allow caches a couple years ago!

We have just started doing this as an excuse to get my wife outside. She was getting rather frusterated until she actually found one her own self. Now she is more enthused.

They did it with 12 caches, one for each point of the scout law (trustworthy, loyal, helpful.....................brave, clean, reverant)
