Hey everyone, thanks for all the nice advice about packing w/ baby. I have another question now, what can you recommend in MT. I live in Big Sky country and obviously have seen some gorgeous places, but what would any of you who have backpacked out here go for. New prospective!

Idaho.

That was a joke. I have done hikes in ID and WY, but not MT... yet, but I shall someday.

Only 2 1/2 months till I do 10 days in Glacier National Park - a trip I planned 2 years ago.

August 1st till August 11th, with a fellow TT'er "arclite", I'm sure some of ya know or remember.

I had planned this trip last year, but my regular bud backed out on me. Unlike long hikes elsewhere, this one seems foolish to try alone. So I'm grateful to this site for gettin' me hooked up with an adventurous, willing, and dependable partner.

Hey newgirl - been up in Glacier much? We're doin' one day hike and then our backpack loop starts and ends at Many Glacier.

I'm thinking about doing some hiking in glacier about the same time, Wall-Man. Do you need to get backcountry permits way ahead of time, or can I just show up at Glacier National Park and start backpacking?

RE: M-O-N-T-A-N-A
i am doing 11 days in glacier in jul. i sent my application in on april 16...not the 15. its very specific. if it came in before the 16 they trash it. you can walk in but you may not get a decent hike. i would get the backcountry guide from them, plan your hike now and send it in asap. they will ask for 1st 2nd and even 3rd choices of itinerary. planning your hike will requier eric movlar (sp) book. elevation is everything. somedays you can do long hikes other up days you'll do well to get in 4-5 miles. alot depends on the area you go into. whatever you do you'd better get started now.

Gojo, my first backpack is going to be in Idaho and I used to live in Wyoming, as well. Wyoming has some real beauty out there, too. Wall-man, I haven't been in Glacier much. The other replies on this thread will probably be alot more helpful. I can say that the area around Glacier is very nice. Lounge Lizard, how old are you. I'd guess about 15.

RE: M-O-N-T-A-N-A
We sent in our itinerary on April 15th, and I believe ours was something like the 127th to be processed. We actually had to change two campsites, and modify the thing around a bit. I was really surprised.

But the plane ticks were booked in February, and now every detail is all booked solid.

Gettin' hard to think about anything else. I haven't done a backpacking trip out west for about 10 years - just a couple of weekends here and there since then - so I'm really looking forward to it. Glacier looks amazing!

deano

Yeah we did get the confirmations, and had to accept the two changes in our campsites.

Didja get yours? We submitted 2nd & 3rd choice itineraries, they processed the sucker, forcing us to accept our 2nd, and it was returned in only like a week and a half. We were amazed at that!

newgirl...Wish I could help ya - I'm tryin' to stick to the thread topic...frustratin' ain't it?!

Better get used to it, newgirl. These threads degenerate quickly. If the Lizard posts, it'll degenerate right away.

Yessir, deanoman. My ex-boss lives by Glacier. On April 16 he was down at the West Glacier Post Office dropping off our application. Six days later, I got our confirmation back. We were reservation #127 (or so)! Our first night campsite choice was already filled! Holy lizard poop Batman! They gave us our second choice, which is ok, except that first day is going to be 2500' up, 2500' down, and 11.5 miles instead of 10. They leave 50% of the space at each campsite open for last minute walk-ins. The sites are available no earlier than 24 hours before your departure. We're going to see if we can't get that first choice campsite after all. But I sure wouldn't want to count on that for an entire trip, blueburp.

I can't wait. I'm excited. Are we there yet?

The Bob Marshall Wilderness is a favorite of mine; lots of bears though.
A couple of years ago we went home and packed a few days in the Tobacco Roots. Probably too early for these places this time of year.
