Photo trick opinion sought
In a lot of photos of running water the water looks milky, like a time-lapse feature was used when taking the pic. I like realistic pics and not this milk-water effect, and was wondering what others thought.

RE: Photo trick
You get this by letting hte shutter stay open longer. I like it both ways. SOme shots look better one way and others look better the other. I've seen some pictures where water is boiling over some rocks and in the long exposure the water glistens in multiple colors while you can barely see water on the rock in the still frame.

i am no expert, but i think it has to do with your shutter speed and film speed etc.....

RE: Photo trick
I like the long exposed shots for waterfalls. It looks like a painting instead of the snap shot.

I agree with DM99. It all depends on the situation. I usually take a couple shots at different shutter speeds to see wich comes out best. Thin waterfalls look great at slow shutter speeds.

Dagnabit again, I did a post and it didn't go through.

steve hiker, to reiterate what has been said using different words, make your aperature smaller, the shot will then freeze the action. It will also make you need more light to eluminate the shot since the aperature hole will be small.

Use a faster speed film, push up the speed by taking it off of the current film exposure speed to a higher one. These ideas can be used one at a time until you get the picture you want.

You may not be able to use a telephoto lens if you need to or desire to, because that lens may not let in enough light.

ahhh yes... the cotton candy effect. Very saccharin. Ethereal, but saccharin.

How do you spell saccharin?

RE: Photo trick
How about using those ziplock bags with sand or dirt in them for a stable platform for doing low light shots. Then you don't have to carry the tripod.

RE: Photo trick
Yeah, now that's a good PHOTO TRICK. May it inspire the rest of us to do the same.

OK, this one is just common sense, I guess. In a group shot with a wide angle lens, DO NOT put the, err, "heavier" people on the ends!!! Especially with a real wide angle lens (say, a 24 or less mm). The lens distorts a bit and it ain't gonna be pretty.

As for outdoors, how about this? When you're standing there in that gorgeous light of sunset, also keep an eye on the horizon OPPOSITE the sunset. Sometimes there will be a great red or orange or pink reflection on clouds that's worth a few shots.

RE: Photo trick
Before hitting the shutter release, look at each of the four corners. One tends to focus on the subject and forgets the rest of the picture. How many times do you get the pics back and find you saying, " I don't remember seeing that".
