I need help “I have to chemistry projects coming up and I have no idea how to start with them. One is a debate, and the other is, that I have to find out what chemistry has to do with my shop. My shop is commercial art, I don't think chemistry has any thing to do with it but, they want me to find something. And write a two page report on it. this is the debate resolution: Be it resolved that tissue from aborted or miscarried fetuses used to treat suck diseases as Parkinson's, diabetes, cancers, leukemia, hepatitis and stroke. I'm on the negative side of this. I need help with this, I think that the debate is complete bull. How can an aborted baby ever help in any thing I don't know? The other project, that?s just nuts. HELP ME PLEASE9:12:26 AM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “As far as the 2nd problem, the products used to create art are chemicals, paints, plasters, protective coatings, wood, plastic, etc. So consider how the various products react with each other, or how the resist reaction, and how do you use these reactions to get what you need done. Can't help on the first problem.” 9:27:18 AM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “I think you have some research to do.” 9:37:48 AM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Commercial art. This is only the first thing that comes to ken?s mind?According to Consumer Reports, color photos printed on an Epson ink jet printer are not as subject to fading as those printed on a Cannon ink jet printer. Actual photographs are even less subject to fading. Seems like the various inks and papers used might have differing chemical properties? You take it from there. Debate: Don?t lose the lesson of debate. It has little to do with the subject of the debate. Do not let the emotionally charged subject matter distract you from learning the lesson, which is how to formulate and present a logical and persuasive and well spoken argument. If you really want to exercise yourself, argue the side you do not personally support. You may find occasion in your life to present your point of view. Debate will prepare you to do it effectively.” 9:51:07 AM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Sometimes, Tea, you are asked to debate a position you don' t whole heartedly believe in. Some of us even need to do that at our place of employment (ie enforcing company policy, even when there are extenuating circumstances.) Perhaps it would help to figure out who on this board would be in favor of banning research to illeviate suffering. Then pretend you are that person.” 9:51:56 AM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “tea, look into lithography and copper plate etching. all these processes involve is acid etching and neutralization. ken is right about the debate.” 9:54:47 AM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “good point, Ken. Chemistry is everywhere, Tea! All of the chemicals used for art(paints, thinners) and even the clothes you wear (poly-ester, etc). That parts easy... As for the debate- I am assuming that you are being asked to support fetal tissue research? Emotions aside, look up work with stem cells...that is what is targeted in fetal tissue. They are also using umbilical blood from babies at birth. When a child is born, blood can be immediately drawn from the umbilicus and then the cells are cryopreserved. If the kid ever gets sick in its lifetime, the umbilical blood is used(stem cells) medicinally. Talk about debates - only the extremely wealthy can afford to have this done. Stem cells are immortal and haven't yet diffrentiated into targeted areas, so the uses are endless. Anyway, stem cell research is fascinating and saving lives... On the downside, do an article search on the kid that died, resulting(allegedly) from stem cell therapy, last year at U.Penn. Good luck. :o)” 10:54:07 AM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “actually, not "only the extremely wealthy can afford to have this done." the stem cell preservation procedure is not that expensive. about half of the women in my department (baby season is upon us) have had this done.” 11:29:58 AM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Tea, I assume you are against using the tissue for medicine. If so you need to find out what the sucess rate is, the cost of the research, ect. Try and show that the likleyness of any procedure is too low compared to the cost. Also research for the pro side too. Know what facts they will use so you can immediatly counter them and throw it back in their faces. As for Chemistry, I do have a major that has absolutly nothing to do with chemestry.” 12:27:49 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “oh, reeeeeeeeeeally?” 12:32:40 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “History Degreed person here. Writing a presentation on a debate is easy, it is based on logic. That your point, and back it up with facts, like Amy G did. A good way to research debate is this, watch one of those political news shows on t.v., listen to what the democrat is saying, and his percieved logic behind his/her point. Then do the exact opposite of what the Democrat did. If you follow this formula, you should do fine, becuase Democrats never back up thier ridiculous arguements with actual facts.” 12:40:02 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “And Republicans do? Hmmmmm your a Republican HBear arn't ya. Go drill for oil.” 12:49:41 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “See my post on Aanwar ThinAir. And I am not Republican, I am a realist.” 12:51:46 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Who can name the falicy committed by Mr. Bear?” 12:54:22 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Hehehe ken. Fun stuff there Tea, great luck! A minor post-project suggestion: for the love of God DO NOT forget to proofread that thang before teach gets it!!! Pretty cool for you tho: a network of adult friends (professionals too!) to enquire aide for highschool projects. Id'a found that way cool way back 'en.” 3:01:55 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “i agree. proofreading is required.” 3:07:08 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Post it here, we'll trash it for ya! (I mean proof read it!)” 3:30:21 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Tea's been hanging out here for a year or so and has no clue about debate? Yeaaah, right. Do your own homework young man!” 3:32:16 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “What about physical chemistry, the feelings you get from working with certain materials? What about the enjoyment they give you that activates endorphines in the brain, and maybe stimulate creative activity or the need to create or complete a project to statisfy your needs? Maybe you would call it pscyological chemistry?” 3:32:39 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Hey T: Number one source of skin for skin grafts --circumsized baby foreskin.” 3:36:00 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Lipstick is activating the endorphines in her brain early again.” 3:36:13 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “What Mr. Bear is saying is that only Republicans are capable of higher thought. Nobody else ever thinks things through so their opinions don't matter. Tea left this out of the Newbies Guide. It's a special link for arrogant people. Click Here” 3:46:25 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Chemistry in commercial art: art works are dated by the chemistry of pigments. If a particular color has chemical A in it, it was made after year X. If that color has chemical B in it, it was made before yearY. That kind of thing. What is the chemistry that makes one pigment resistent to fading in the sun, or one type of paper non-yellowing, or archival paper? What is the chemistry of acrylics vs. oil paints? What is an acrylic? a latex? an ink? an oil? What solvents work with each and why? What is the chemistry of different ink choices? What kind of art does one produce when high on one type of chemical vs another type, or no chemical?” 3:46:34 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help 3:49:18 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help 3:51:26 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “I thank you all for your help with this, and I will post my report. In the debate, my teacher put me against the uses of the dead babies tissue for the use of..... luckly I'm moraly against that too. So its all good.” 4:06:56 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “ken, my sensuality wakens as soon as I do :{}” 4:28:55 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Oh, do go on!!! ;-)” 4:45:30 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Very smart post by AmyG, and she ain't even a college graduate!” 5:16:16 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “I arise to the sound of chirping birds. My senses tell me I'm hungry. I reach into the cereal and place a piece on my tounge and taste the sweetness. It's so good, I want to taste more. I feel the contours of the cereal, as the taste explodes in my mouth. I don't stop, it's so good I keep going back for more, and that's just breakfast. You should see what dinner is like.” 5:32:46 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “For real fun stuff, look at the toxic chemicals in common art supplies that can help explain why some artists in the past who mixed their own paints went "crazy," such as Van Gogh. Selenium, cadmium, lead, arsenic, mercury, etc. Then you can look at the horrible pathologies of poisoning the nervous system. That kind of stuff always fascinates morbid teenage classmates. A hopeful art major in my Comp. II class last year took this route for the science research paper I make them write.” 8:07:12 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “That boy that died at the U. of Penn had gene therapy for a rare genetic disease and not a stem cell transplant. They had a show on 20/20 about him last year. He died of a massive immune response to the gene therapy procedure.” 9:52:12 PM 5/18/01 RE: I need help “Hey AmyG - Thanks for the heads up on the umbilical blood/stem cell thingy. Coincidentally, I got some information in the mail this weekend from a company that does this cryogenic preservation as the baby is due in ~3 weeks. Its not all that expensive (unless I'm extremely wealthy and didn't know it) - about $1,000 initially and $95 per year for storage. Sure would buy a lot of gear though.” 2:05:53 PM 5/21/01 RE: I need help “you.... you.... yuppie scum! LOL!!!!” 2:10:25 PM 5/21/01 RE: I need help “Or I may need the money to gas-up my SUV for my trips to Starbucks.” 2:16:19 PM 5/21/01 RE: I need help “I hear that people have had some success finding stem cells in fat.” 6:00:29 PM 5/21/01 RE: I need help “So we feed the babies ice cream and buy gear with a clear conscience. There wasn't any cryogenic stem cell fad when I was having babies. Back then the fad was to have circus gear hanging from the ceiling in the birthing room. I never got to try it out though.” 6:24:46 PM 5/21/01
