Lost Girl Scouts
There was an article in our local (NJ) paper about six Girl Scouts and two leaders going out for a 2-hour hike in the Ramapo Mountains Friday night. They were located around 5 am the next morning after a search by the police and a SAR team. I remember a couple of posts here last week by a couple of Girl Scout leaders planning a weekend hike (was it m&m and young&creaky?).

I don?t want to embarrass anyone but do we have any interesting stories? Come on ? out with it!

We didn't get lost hiking but on the way home we stopped for snacks at a farm because the kids were STARVING (parents, yes the kids do need to bring food on a hike). I managed to lock the keys in the car with my extra set in the backpack, in the car. You will be happy to know that Chrysler mini-vans can not be broken into (at least by the police). One of the moms had to come get us. Very embarrassing. I'm sure they will allow me to take their kids on camping trips to remote places, don't you?

RE: Lost Girl Scouts
Me and my daddy went to Wyodaho to walk in the woods and sleep in the woods with Miss Friendly Ranger at the Windtooths Mountains. We rode in the truk to her hous and the mans sayed "she is awreddy in the woods and will be gone for the long time" but they would not say wher she was in the woods.

My daddy, the smart man, sayed "that is ok Belle - I think we can find her". He knowed wher she prolly was in the woods, so we rode in the truk to the woods and put on our pakpaks and walked til nite and made a tent. I do not kno how my daddy knowed what woods to go to, but he jus did. I think it is the sekert. Agin, I shold prolly demind y'all that my daddy is the smart man.

Anyways, when it was mornin me and my daddy was eatin our suppers and I hered some buddy talkin and looked at the woods and seen a man and a woman walkin in the woods and they was walkin by me and my daddy. I was gonna yell at them cuz I was skeerd they wold get my supper but my daddy sayed "shhhh".

In a minit the woman sayed "Ohmagawd!" and runned at my daddy - I was skeerd they was gonna ressel but they did not ressel. If they resseled I wold prolly hafta help ressel so my daddy did not get beat up much.

Kno what? The woman was Miss Friendly Ranger! She is the happy nice lady! She gave my daddy hugs and sayed "I am sprised to see y'all!" Then she sayed "How did y'all kno where we was?" and I sayed that it is the sekert.

Anyways, me and my daddy walked in the woods and sleeped in the woods with Miss Friendly Ranger and the nother ranger but the nother ranger broke his leg and had to walk back to the truk one day. Then, the nother day, me and my daddy had to get in our truk and ride to my uncles hous and Miss Friendly Ranger was in the woods all by her self but she was not skeerd.

We had to werk! Miss Friendly Ranger made me and my daddy saw off logs that was falled down in the way and throw roks wher ther was fire places. It was the good time, tho. I am happy that we found Miss Friendly Ranger. We will do that agin this summer time and that is the good thing.

RE: Lost Girl Scouts
Oh young&creaky you asked the wrong people to break into the car.

A co-worker locked his keys in his car down in Atlantic City a few years ago. He went to a dry cleaners and got a coat hanger but was unable to get in. He called the police who gave up after about 10 minutes saying he'd have to call a locksmith. After the cop left, a street guy came up and offered to help. Using the coat hanger, he was in under 10 seconds!

Would it help you to fess-up if I told you I got lost once too?

RE: Lost Girl Scouts
Violin, most kids are way better at finding their way than the grownups. Those girl scouts probably got lost because the leaders would not listen to the girl scouts about which way to go. I have gotten lost with my family when I was a kid but we never had to spend the night in the woods. This area is so populated, it is rare to be on a trail all by yourself for very long. I've tried to pack my small Jansport with important safety items but I never have food enough for a group. I don't have a frame backpack yet. The parents need to take my pack list seriously too. They can't send the kids with a small fanny pack, like what sometimes happens.

RE: Lost Girl Scouts
ok I have got one. Not really lost just hiked to far.
Hiking the AT we live in the area and were with a group who had checked out the trail the day before. We were camping on top of Rich Mountain. We climbed the mountain and at the top there was a fork in the trail. Well the guys in front of us had blocked the fork with sticks so we went to the right. As we were goin down I was thinking I thought we were stayin on top? Well we got to the bottom and kept goin. My husband I were talking he said we have gone to far well I was holding to the guys who had checked it out. We finally ran into a hunter and ask him were the fire tower was. Well you know what he said. Back the way you came about a mile......Well needless to say we got the award for climbing the same mountain twice in one day...... I guess I should always trust my husband. Gee that was a crazy day. And to think we hike all the time. Goin down should have been a sign loud and clear.

RE: Lost Girl Scouts
Y&C, you may have to institute the rule we had back in the boy scouts, which is that kids who show up without the items on the minimum required equipment list DON'T GO ON TRIP, PERIOD. It's the only way the parents will ever take your packing list seriously. You also need to cover your ass -- if something happens to a kid because they didn't have the food or water or gear you said their should, even if the parents ignored your instructions, and no matter how carefully worded the permission slip is, YOU are still the one who is going to get sued.
explorer

RE: Lost Girl Scouts
explorer, you are absolutely right. Unfortunately, being sued is something we girl scout leaders worry a lot about. A lot of leaders do not take their girl scouts on any trips that are not council sponsored, simply because they don't think it is worth the possibility of a lawsuit. The boy scout troops in my town do much more exciting activities because those leaders are not as afraid. They seem to require half as much training as the girl scouts require (or maybe they ignore rules, I don't know). For me, I have to balance my need to not be sued with my need to involve my scouts in more demanding outdoor activities. SO as you suggested, pack inspections and then send home those that are unprepared. Feels kinda military. Oh, well.

Anyone want to talk about boy scouts getting lost, and interesting boy scout trips, feel free. This is an androgenous, gender-neutral, non-political, non-conservative, non-liberal, non-religious, non-athiest (did I forget something?) thread.

I just had a phone call from my older daughter's girl scout leader. It seems that her husband has recently caught the camping bug and is talking about nothing else. So finally she says to him, "Well if we have to go camping, can we do it at Disney World?" When he finished swearing, all he would say was that he wanted to do REAL camping. She called me to get an explanation. I said "It sounds like you are going REAL camping. Want to borrow my trowel?"

Here's your

Lost Boy Scouts

story:

The

Boy Scouts

of America have

lost

considerable corporate and government support since a Supreme Court ruling in June that the group had a First Amendment right to exclude James Dale and other gay scouts and leaders.

Just to keep it an androgenous, gender-neutral, non-political, non-conservative, non-liberal, non-religious, non-athiest thread.

RE: Lost Girl Scouts
The BSA would have lost even more if the court had ruled the other way. Lots of the troop sponsors and volunteers had stated in advance they would likely or certainly leave if the government was going to dictate the standards or lack of standards for scout leaders. This went beyond the gay issue. Some scout troop sponsors are very picky about who is permitted to be a leader. Child abusers, drug users, porn stars, some guy that has not outdoor skills, there is a long list of people that, because of the choices of that person, one group or another may not want as scout leaders because they represent a moral standard opposed to that of the sponsoring group or volunteer.

Please don?t ague the gay / BSA thing again. That was already done here I think. My point is that the BSA was going to lose support not matter what the court decided.

RE: Lost Girl Scouts
Speaking of Boy Scouts. My son?s eagle scout certificate has a signature on it by a person that the troop sponsor would not have permitted to be a scout leader because of moral issues. His unrepentant behavior includes cheating on his wife and lying to the courts. To these he has made an admission. You guessed it, Bill Clinton. I am sure it is a stamp. It sickens me to see that signature knowing that he does not support the standards of the Boy Scouts. I think is some custom to have the Pres. be the an honorary chairman or something. Mr. Clinton is probably not the only President that took the title without really supporting the standards. Maybe it is time for the Boy Scouts to change the custom.

RE: Lost Girl Scouts
This is an issue that has come up in town. Apparently because of the ruling, lots of groups that used to sponsor boy scout troops, could no longer do so because of government funding rules (you must not discriminate if you receive government funding). A lot of churches stepped in to fill the gap.

As far as I know, girl scout troops don't have this sponsor system. I don't know why the two organizations are set up so differently.

Which is immoral

A scout leader that is gay and discrete or

A scout leader that is married, hetersexual and cheats on his spouse.

FYI - Girl Scouts can be sponsored by an organization. From expierence, They also have to leave that organization if they discriminate.
example: the bs in my church were asked to leave because most of the boys were not from that church. I almost had to take 150 girls from that church becuause of that discrimination. Luckly the church changed their minds after they were told that we would be leaving also.

RE: Lost Girl Scouts
m&m, how did you get involved in that? Are you a service unit manager in your town for the girls and then also involved in a boy scout "pack"? As far as the moral question, I think people should be faithful to their spouses, and I don't feel strongly about pushing gays out of community organizations. The scouts have rules where we are to have at least two adults at any scout event, and three is better because at no time are the children to be alone with one adult. In reality this is a difficult rule to follow but very necessary. People can be dangerous no matter which orientation they have. I would prefer to give kids the maximum protection without pushing away good adults.
