The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “[deactivate lurking device] Hello friends and fellow llamaramajamas. I haven't been around much -- between now and the trip I'll be working hard on multiple projects -- good stuff, very happy to be working on it, lobbied hard to get it. Too much to type -- I will happily explain all when I see you. I was thinking about what soft-cover book I would like to carry along with me (and whether to bring a hammock from which to read it, but that's another conversation) and it occurred to me that with the number of people in the 10 day group and in the 7 day group if everybody brought just one book with them we'd actually have one hell of a traveling library. I get a kick out of this because I've always imagined that if I lived in the old west I'd have been one of those guys traveling with a small duffel bag of clothes and an enormous foot locker full of books. And we're going to have a good foot locker's worth ourselves. So what's everybody planning to be perusing during the llamarama? Anyone devoting their llama weight ration to the complete works of William Shakespeare? (Unlikely. Complete works of Anheuser Busch more likely.) But seriously, what'll ya'll be carryin'? For myself, I'm torn right now between William Brewer's Up and Down California, which I've been wanting to read for a while, for it's stories of Sierra exploration and the flip side of some of the stories told by Clarence King; OR maybe re-read Fellowship of the Ring just for fun, or maybe some short stories or maybe the first Harry Potter book. Anyone else?” 6:52:59 PM 5/22/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “After the number of times I've carried a book that I never had a chance to read, I've stopped carring them. I know I'll regret this someday when I get trapped inside the tent by the weather.” 1:53:14 AM 5/23/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “oooooooh. FoTR. hmmm. i think i've heard of that, somewhere.” 7:26:38 AM 5/23/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “If anything, it will be something by Patricia Cornwall, Robert Ludlum, or the like. Total escape. Mel carries quite a library.” 10:29:37 AM 5/23/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “Oh, really? What ya planning to bring, mel? Nav, sometimes my book goes unread, but I know I'll regret it if I don't have one. Especially on a trip with layover days built in. Rad, it's an obscure British book but it seems some people have heard of it. It's about some folks who take a stroll through the mountains.” 1:44:21 PM 5/23/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “That's Cornwell, ain't it?” 3:15:42 PM 5/23/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “like naviguesser,,,,i quit bringing ones that end up unread.... i have journal with snips of quotes, pic of my dogs, my son and meher baba hugging a goat....and two small books .... "the endless path that leads to joy"...than nicht (sp?). and "the two ounce backpacker"...by i forgot just now.... but i can bring "King of Travelers" and a couple of others to pass around.....I heard the Harry Potter books are really good....” 6:15:57 PM 5/23/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “OM, I am only six months into my own yoga practice/study, so perhaps you could explain to the ignorant the significance of a photograph of meher baba...... hugging a goat?” 6:57:50 PM 5/23/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “Hey, Explorer What a co-inkey-dink! I was thinking of bringing Up and Down California! No need to bring two, do you have a copy? I have one that has been sitting unread for a while. Other than that I have been thinking of Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver if it is out in paperback by then, and probably a murder mystery/courtroom drama or two. I need to read myself to sleep. Excellent thread” 10:02:56 PM 5/23/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “In memory of the late Douglas Adams who left us just last week, I may re-read Life, The Universe & everything. It's a tie between his stuff & Tolkein's - I don't even want to guess how many times I've read them....” 10:44:01 PM 5/23/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “I ain't goin, but I am reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, by Robert Pirsig. VERY GOOD BOOK.” 11:18:20 PM 5/23/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “pisgah, I'm jealous that you are reading it for the first time. I feel that if I'm reading, I'm unconscious of my surroundings on the trail. I read at home.” 11:28:21 PM 5/23/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “explorer....lol......the picture has nothing to do with yoga!(well, maybe not the aspect of yoga you may be thinking of) actually, the picture is in a book..."Three Essays on Universal Law" by Mickey Singer.....it faces the essay on Love.....the unconditional kind...where the yogi sees god in every person, place and thing..........i love that picture ..totally a personal thing, like my kids pic (one taken when he was 13, in the dugout at a little league tournament...he put a big wad of gum in his nostril , looks like a giant bugger....i love that pic of him ) and the dogs.....when i am away from home......i like to look at all of them before i sleep, makes my heart smile.... ok...now the world knows a deep personal thing ....and..it is monumentally insignificant!!!.......... i will bring an extra copy of that book just for you!...it is small....and a very good read, very scientific too....you like science? ....dont worry folks....i am harmless i tell ya.....i am nearly normal....really..... i am om......and so are you.......:)” 1:10:05 AM 5/24/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “pepperdog......You will LOVE Prodigal Summer.....wow b. kingsolver outdid herself with that one.” 1:18:39 AM 5/24/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “I carry Catcher in the Rye. For some reason I have to have this book. I've never read it but I just keep buying copies.” 2:44:11 AM 5/24/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “explorer...correction (i was cross eyed from working on work budget yesterday)....baba is hugging a lamb.......” 7:19:22 AM 5/24/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “LOL! at deathmarch!!” 8:06:54 AM 5/24/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “pisgahforest- I read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance in '79 before my second cross-country motorcycle adventure. I had a tough time with the convoluted nature of the writing but struggled through. Maybe its time to read it again now that I've been married for twenty years and have three sons.” 8:25:46 AM 5/24/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “actually, catcher in the rye is one of my favorite books, tho. hmm.” 8:28:06 AM 5/24/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “I will have historical fiction, legal fiction (ala Grishom), history (local), medical mystery... I will have two or three, but the exact names are up in the air until I start packing my independent trip boxes next month. I'll let you know then. I will have books to lend if you run out. I generally don't tend to read crap (subjective), or fussy, frilly soap opera-type caca.” 12:01:04 AM 5/25/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “Me thinks I shall bring sometime pithy. Yeah dats right ........ some Mad magazine and the classic Split Beaver issue of National Lampoon!” 12:05:29 AM 5/25/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “Om, sounds interesting. Have you read "Ethics for a New Millenium" by the Dalai Lama? A friend was strongly recommending it this weekend.” 7:08:44 PM 5/29/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “Ethics for the Solman? You jest! 8^)” 1:06:15 AM 5/30/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “Some books are good to read again about every five years. I've been thinking I would read the Dune books again this summer. I did the hobbit thing again last year. The Harry Potter is good--I read it with my grand daughter last spring. I don't think I own the catcher in the rye anymore--read it several times long ago. I'm with you Mel on soaps--ugh.” 1:17:28 AM 5/30/01 RE: The Incredible LlamaRama Traveling Library “explorer,....actually have not read any of the Dali LLamas writings...but, i would like to......i feel compelled to read anything written by someone who smiles ALL the time ...... it is the "so much to read, so little time"” 1:39:34 AM 5/30/01
