I will be back east on business in June and wondered if anyone would be interested in getting in a hike June 2nd and 3rd?

I was planning on doing a section on the AT in NJ, but am flexible depending on the area..

Are you new to this site? I will be hiking in that area Saturday with the kids. I was going to call today about campsite availability this summer. Sites in the state parks are 100% reservable. I don't know how they handle the AT specifically.

y&c - no reservations for the NJ AT shelters - you have to camp at the shelters/ designated areas. What part of the NJ AT are you doing with the kids???

June 2-3 I will be in PA rafting - Next time!

m&m, I have a friend rafting in PA that same weekend with her family. Have fun! I'm hoping to hike some sections of the AT in Stokes and High Point this summer and fall. Car camping and dayhikes for now. I know we are weenies compared to most on this site, but I have to start somewhere.

No - you are doing great. It's a little nerve racking putting together Backpacking/hiking trips with the kids. I was always nervous about getting lost, someone getting hurt, parents.
We did the NJ AT year before last and I'm up there all the time with different level hikes. If you need ANY info just yell.

Hey - your friend isn't with a BS troop in NJ is she????

m&m, my friend has only daughters, like me. Her youngest is close with my oldest, and her husband has suddenly caught the camping/hiking bug. So I am hoping to develop a little backpacking chapter in my town, and we can all learn together.

Stokes says that they always have campsites available, so you can just drive up last minute. High Point claims the same thing on weekdays, but summer weekends it's wise to book 1-2 weeks in advance. Is there usually room for everyone at the AT campsites or should TXWoodswoman get into the campsite early? Have you ever had a problem with the people you've met on the AT along the Delaware? The northern tri-state AT area looks less crowded to me than the Gap and Worthington, at least while driving through.

Can't be that far from the hospital that weekend cuz the wife looks like a ripe watermelon right now.

Camping at shelters/designated areas only applies to the heavily used Water Gap area within the National Park. Once you get north of that its at least 200 feet off trail/from water, 1/4 mile (I think) from the road. Near the Buttermilk Falls area you can't camp at all for a stretch. The trail through NJ falls under several different jurisdictions and it can be difficult to sort through all the regulations as you have to talk to several different rangers even for a relatively short hike. Need a good map, a telephone and patience. One constant though - no fires.

Have fun!

Gee thanks, Sir Pete...listen little brother, I finally get my butt back to Jersey and you're in Wisconsin..what's up with that?? Everytime I make it "home" you dissappear..hmm..I see a pattern developing..

Well folks, if my brother is out of town, then I can camp in his backyard, so I guess I don't have to worry about stokes or high point, but thanks for the info..and yes, I do want to get away from the Gap and the commercialized weekenders..will probably start further north above Millbrook and hike north.

Hey Sir Pete, as a newbie to this site and a single woman, who are the guys on here I have to watch out for..besides yourself, of course??

See y'all later!!

If I was to single out the fags, pinkos or freaks from this place the list would be long.......and the rift that it would create would be as long and as deep as the grand canyon. I will just say that all is not well here!
