Socks? “How many pairs of socks do you take with you on a trip? I usually take 2-3 for a 5 day trip, but I have done the 30+ day trips. Brewster” 11:43:25 PM 5/22/01 RE: Socks? “One sock per beer...they make great beer coolers!” 11:45:25 PM 5/22/01 RE: Socks? “LOL I take one extra pair no matter how long the trip unless I anticipate getting them wet and then I take one more.” 12:00:24 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “For more than a night (I don't do one-nighters anyhow) I always take 2 pr hiking sox, and 3 pr liners. One'a my pr of liners I use only for bedtime.” 12:57:08 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “3 pr. Wash when needed, hang from pack to dry.” 6:14:48 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “If it's an overniter, only the pair I wear. Never more than 2. I try to keep the weight down.” 7:29:41 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “I usually take two pair of the cheerleader socks with the little balls on the back. It does the trick!” 8:06:14 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “Balls on your back!?!” 8:10:18 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “I think they are called poms bacpac. If you want to shed some weight, cut them off, but you won't be making a fashion staement.” 8:15:19 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “Well I take one pair for each day I am out. I need fresh socks everday. Be good to your feet they take ya where ya want to go.” 8:21:24 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “Don't like laundry duty....eh Barb? That would be a lot of socks on a two week trip ;)” 9:13:32 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “Oh yeah... I normaly carry 2 or 3 pair.” 9:17:40 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “wear a set - bring a set - for a week I bring an extra liner. Wash out when needed. Do rub my feet with alchol every night. Drys them out and makes them feel GOOD!” 9:17:49 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “Two pair to wear, and a third set aside for sleeping. That way, if I am ever in a situation where both pair are wet, I'll have dry ones for sleeping. Same for long john sleep wear. I don't hesitate to ford creeks when neccessary, and I don't mind hiking in a downpour - but by golly I'm gonna sleep dry! Liners don't seem to be of any benefit for me, so I quit packin'em.” 9:39:31 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “Well I haven't had the time to go out for two weeks. Vacations are only one... If I was out that long I would wash my socks.” 10:30:23 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “2 pairs of socks and liners” 10:37:08 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “2 Pairs of Smart Wools” 11:36:16 AM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “I carry at least one extra pair. I carry more depending on the distance not the number of days.” 1:30:55 PM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “I thought Socks was Bill Clinton's cat.” 1:38:48 PM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “What ever happened to the cat? I heard they gave it away, because no one wanted it. I guess its political value was all used up.” 1:41:05 PM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “Last I heard Bill's secretary was going to keep the cat. I think that the cat was really Chelsea's, anyway. Bill didn't like the cat and got the Labrador for himself.” 2:00:21 PM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “ The Wilcox/McCandlish LawOf Online Discourse Evolution(and Corollaries) THE WILCOX/MCCANDLISH LAW OF ONLINE DISCOURSE EVOLUTIONThe chance of success of any attempt to change the topic or direction of a thread of discussion in a networked forum is directly proportional to the quality of the current content. I keep one dry for sleeping too.” 3:09:10 PM 5/23/01 RE: Socks? “two pair, one to wear, one to pack. I never change unless they get wet. Nice try Violin.” 2:16:44 AM 5/24/01 RE: Socks? “I bring one extra pair.” 9:13:37 PM 5/24/01 RE: Socks? “One extra pair. Wear one, wash the other, switch and repeat next day. Oh, and it's always appreciated when you use your hiking partner's cook pot to clean your socks. :O” 9:27:36 PM 5/24/01 RE: Socks? “I got 2 pairs of Thoro's a long time ago, and they still to this day as they did when I first got them make my feet sweaty and stinky more than ANY of my other socks. Must be synthetic.” 11:35:37 AM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “They are synthetic, Buddur, but I really love my Thorlos. I haven't noticed any bad odor. Maybe your feet need some help. Powder, or the alchohol M&M mentioned?” 11:41:58 AM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “ditto lyndys. i use thorlo lt hikers.” 11:45:13 AM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “My thorlos are a wool blend (much like smart wool) they don't get much stinkier than any other sock. I have gore tex boots so they all get stinky.” 12:05:27 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “Tholo trekkers - 60% merino wool, 37% acrylic, 3% spandex. My feet sweat if you look at'em, so I've never noticed any additional problem with Thorlos. My favorite socks, especially the knee highs. Josette says all I need is a little red tassle in them and I'll look like a little boy scout! Socks are dirt cheap at STP, warm and comfy, and last almost forever. IMHO, Thorlos rule.” 12:09:47 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “My dogs are very decriminating. They will only chew thorlo or smart wool socks. I can leave dress socks scattered across the floor for days, but my good hiking socks will last less than 5 minutes if they ever hit the floor. I never take more than two pairs of socks becuase I never HAVE more than two pairs of socks!” 12:26:06 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “I like the thin, running Thorlos. I tried Smart Wool, but they didn't dry as well as I thought they would. I think I'd re-name them "Average Intelligence" Wool.” 12:26:27 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “A clean pair for every day on the trail plus one extra.” 12:27:24 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “Even on week + trips?” 12:29:59 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “I work.. hehe.. week PLUS trip?.. what's that? :)” 12:32:56 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “You have to get a job with more vacation time TownDawg!” 12:34:52 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “!$%&! I thought it said 'Spocks'.” 12:36:24 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “hehehehehe!” 12:38:28 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “Even if I HAD more vacation time? In this world I work in, they would never approve being away TWO weeks.” 12:43:00 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “UumMm.. what's a spock? *smirk*” 12:43:55 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “okay... 2 or 3 pair... Smartwool or Thorlos (the thickest they make), depending on weather... and I have no beef with the cat.” 12:49:33 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “a spork typo obviously (grin) 1 pair Bridgedales - leave them on all the time - if cold at night put a pair of "hunting" socks on over the Bridgedales - the "hunting" socks are an emergency backup if necessary to actually change socks while on the trail” 12:55:07 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “2 pairs thin socks(Patagonia Capilene), 2 pr liners (REI), and 1 pr fleece socks to wear w/Tevas at camp. Got socks/clothes resupplied twice on the 30 day trip.” 1:38:13 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “Thorlos and smartwool. Buddur - 15 minutes or 15 days - you're gonna stink. I'll stay upwind! (the alcohol does work nicely and comes in handy when you have blisters and want to get the dirt/oil from around the blister. It makes the mole/2ndskin stick better)” 1:47:28 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “Hey, I just heard on "What Do You Know?" on NPR last weekend that your feet produce 2 oz. (each) of sweat per day! They had a mailman on the phone who got the correct answer. He guessed that he produced 2 shot glasses of sweat per day per foot. (EWWWWW)” 2:05:33 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “What if any are the benifits of liners? Do they have a purpose or are they an unneeded expense and extra weight?” 4:44:55 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “ ![]() 5:13:30 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “I use liners for sleeping, and if I get new boots I put em under my socks to prevent blisters during the break-in period.” 5:22:59 PM 10/09/01 RE: Socks? “Depends on which boots I am wearing. With my regular BP boots - don't use them.” 5:31:36 PM 10/09/01
