Experienced Mamas and Papas “Okay, this is not directly related to bping, but it could at some point effect it. My daughter is miserable. She has moaned and cried for the last 24 hrs. I barely slept last night and she is having a bad day today, as well. I think it is one of two things, the heat or teething. It has been in the upper 80's for the last couple of days and late last week she acted the same way when it got this hot. On the other hand she is drooling everywhere. If it's the heat, I don't think I want to risk any pack trips w/ her. She will be miserable and it will break my heart. If it is teething, how would I treat that on a trip (with her infant tylenol?)? I am hoping hyperpacker or his wife have some suggestions or any other mommys and daddys.” 2:11:06 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Don't ask these fools for medical advice. If your pediatrition is not accesable, get one that is.” 2:15:29 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Just wondering how they handled similiar sits. w/ their own children, ken. I have a great ped. and she is almost always available, but she said that I might just have to grin and bear it through this. I about to freak though. I hate to see my darling cry. I have found that some of the best advice on baby care is from those who have been there, done that.” 2:27:10 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “I agree with ken call the dr. I don't know how old she is but it does sound like our kids when they were teething. If the dr. says that is what it is, Mrs. Rabbitman and I used those soft liquid filled rings that you freeze in a cooler ice and let them knaw on. They chewed them even after they were thawed out. That always quieted our kids down. I guess they just need something to rub against their sore gums. Kids are pitiful when they can't tell you where they hurt but a good dr. can almost always figure it out. Hope the little one gets to feeling better.” 2:31:17 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Do they still make those pacifiers that are filled with water and freeze? We used one when our kids were teething. Finding the source of the crying can be difficult. They usually drool and put their hands in their mouths when teething. Have you changed her diet recently? Little digestive tracks don't work very efficiently. Make sure she has not got a low grade fever. Try some cognac. For yourself of course, not the baby. I wouldn't take a sick kid on a hiking trip.” 2:35:04 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “I?d be glad to swap baby stories. Mine?s five and starting kindergarten in the fall. No way would I comment on medication (Tynenol) for babies on the Internet. Sounds like you and baby are having a rough time. I take it you?re a single mom. All the more rough. I feel for you, Newgirl. Bacpac is correct about diet. Some babies have a rough time with certain foods. Dairy is a frequent culprit. I know a woman who breastfed her baby. She noticed that when she ate dairy, the baby was cranky and when she didn?t the baby was ok. Again, ask the doc.” 2:47:56 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “sound like a touch of both heat and possible teething. It is probably nothing serious, however, I will agree with the others, call a Dr. Peace of mind can be hard to come by with kids, get it when you can.” 2:51:39 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “I am a mom and grandma, my advise is seek out a pediatrician. watch to see if she is pulling on her ears, this is prime time for allergy problems with babies ,I know, both my grandbabies went to the dr today. If you hike with your little one you will need some good advise from the dr if it is allergies.” 2:52:18 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “ide sudjest rubing sum burbin on the babies gumbs. Dis id wutt mi mudder did fer me wen i wuds yung. i turnt out jest find. nine drops of paragraphic lots of times each day will help baby sleeep array the pains.” 4:23:04 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “I forget how old your baby is. Those water filled frozen teethers are good, and even frozen waffles if the pediatrician says she's old enough. My kids liked ice chips to chew on but ask the doctor because I don't remember the age on that either. Good luck. I know you're miserable when the baby is miserable. If the heat is bad, frequent lukewarm baths can be soothing if the baby likes them, kinda like swimming.” 5:12:03 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “For teething pain (if that's what it is) we cut up banana slices and froze them. If baby's old enough for that, it has to be tastier than a frozen ring - though they worked too. Just keep a close eye out so it won't choke. Realize that babies don't regulate their body temp as well as we do and the heat can be much less bearable for them - even dangerous. Of course, I'm no doctor and you should get your diagnosis there.” 5:29:31 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Everyone wants to consult the doctor. This is a kid we are talking about not one of those pedigree trail dogs. Doctors are not geniuses anyway. Mom's advice about an ear infection is good. If the ears are infected it would be a good idea to see the vet.” 5:56:44 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “The 'see a dr.' advice was inserted after consultation with legal counsel. True most doctors did fail out of veterinary school first.” 6:04:30 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Thanks bacpac, for recognizing what my issue is here! I have consulted my ped. (who is a wonderful dr., that I trust). She just said to grin and bear it. I think that advice from other parents w/ more experience has helped the most in single parenting so far. The baby is 7 months old. Also, I would never take her on a hike if she were already sick. I meant if she became sick while we were out (of course I never plan to be very far from civil. w/ her). The dr. said to give her tylenol every 4 hrs., but I hate doing that for days on end. Anyway, thanks to everyone. I really do think that there are some nice people at this site!” 6:11:06 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “"I really do think that there are some nice people at this site!" Ahh, the naivity of a newbie. 7 months is obviously too young for the bananas or ice chips. Save them for later. Best of luck with her, hope she feels better.” 6:19:18 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Violin, why do you insist on being negative about everyone. They really have been nice to me. Aside from the bizarre (i.e. Tarp Rat), people have been pretty much nice.” 6:26:41 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Evidently Violin is a realist. newgirl will go through the meat grinder eventually. Hopefully you will come out a stronger person and not some twisted one dimensional loser like Violin. hehehe” 6:35:13 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “newgirl, Try giving your little girl a clean cool wet wash cloth. Babys love sucking the water out it and it's good for teething, fever and just generaly cools them down. Organic too.” 6:58:49 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “If it's teething. Dip you finger in some tequlia (or any other beverage) and rub your finger on her gums. I helped my new granddaughter.” 6:59:36 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Perhaps The-Naviguesser was on Violin's mind. A couple fingers of tequila will cure just about anything.” 7:05:31 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Wolfsister, thanks, that is a great suggestion. I can kill two birds w/ one stone!” 7:05:53 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Dip your finger. Then you drink the 2 fingers! Dude! You've got to get this in the right order! 8^)” 7:13:25 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “wolf sister, It worked for Richard Petty. Oops, I am showing my age and my heritage>/i>” 7:19:59 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Can you feel her teeth through her gums? Does she knaw on stuff? Frozen teething toys and tylenol (now I'd use baby Ibuprofen) for when it got really bad. That is what got us through three kids.” 8:21:26 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Newgirl I'm afraid you're a bit more experienced than Hyper and I. We're on our first child too and she's only four monthes old. Wolfsister has a great idea with the washclothe. Maybe it might feel even better if you froze or chilled it for her? I can relate to your frustration. Abby had colic for the first two weeks of her little life. I know how terrible it is to not know how to fix their hurts. It's awful to listen to them cry and not be able to make it better or comfort them. Hang in there sister, this too shall pass.” 10:42:43 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and the Papas “Avoid Ham Sadwhiches” 11:09:59 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “newgirl, I think your doctor is right on the money. You will have to learn supreme patience. Do you know any meditative techniques? Here is some good news for you. My first daughter cried and cried for almost six months straight. After that, she was the most wonderful, happy baby of all four of mine. She is a wonderful 23 year-old now, and I am so glad I was blessed with the patience to "tough it out". Many, many parents have to go through just what you are experiencing right now. Don't forget to talk to people about your stituation. Have you talked to your Mom?” 11:50:25 PM 5/25/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Blow pot smoke in her face...that'll soon calm her down! Just kidding =80” 12:10:32 AM 5/26/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Thanks for the sugg. Buddur. I think I need it for me, though. Just Kidding . . . kinda'!” 12:38:33 PM 5/26/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Now we know how deathmarch got his name! Someone told us many years ago... And now I'm going to tell you. If your baby is crying, check to see if she's dirty, if she is change her. If not, is she hungry? If she is feed her. If not, is she sick? If she is get her to a Dr. If not....(now comes the HARD part)....let her cry. It is a very hard thing to do. It may take 10 or 30 min. But they do learn, even at this tender age, that crying is not the way to get attention. The benefits will be paid back many times over the years. Both ways.” 6:25:05 PM 5/26/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “ambasol is a great thing, rub a little of their itty bitty gums and the quiet is like heaven. Don't let these heathens get to you like they did me, I just got out of the asylum for a three month vacation and came back for more.” 11:21:21 PM 5/26/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “newgirl, Teething is no fun. I, personally, avoid frozen things. It numbs the pain, like ambisol, but when there is no pain, the baby doesn't bite down which helps the teeth come through. The sooner that tooth cuts through, the sooner their pain is reduced. I used a cold wet washcloth, also. Hang in there! :o)” 9:25:41 AM 5/29/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “learn some thing new every day” 1:26:40 AM 5/30/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas 5:56:30 PM 6/22/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Thanks Violin. I've used the site quite a few times already. It's a pretty good one. However, we're in the clear for now. She went through all the classics of teething and then didn't pop one out. She's probably just biding her time.” 6:51:14 PM 6/22/01 RE: Experienced Mamas and Papas “Teething sucks - (we used frozen carrots) If she is on juices, you can use the Tupperware forms that make the ice pops. As I recall, my kids ears acted up also when they teethed. As for the heat, it's usually alittle cooler in the woods.” 7:33:29 PM 6/22/01
