RE: Headlamp?
Tuesday night is a full moon. I'm hoping that there will be no cloud cover. The stars have been brilliant all weekend. I hope this continues through Tuesday. I won't need a headlamp then. :o)

Tea to all Tikka users
How bright is it? Is it as bright as a 3d mag? 2AA mag? 1AAAmag? cheap sears flashlight? or as bright as the bat signal?

It's somewhere between the bat signal and a bic lighter.

RE: Headlamp?
I agree with the comments about the battery pack at the back of the head - I would avoid that style in the future - my current headlamp is that style and while great for activities standing up or sitting up it is very irratating when laying down - my next lamp will NOT have a behind the head battery pack.

I bought the Moonlight because I liked it best. Just head out to a backpacking shop and do some comparison shopping and buy the one you like best.

Yes, sklukaz...REI sales apply to online purchases. They also have the MSR Pocket Rocket on sale, if anyone is interested. Sale starts Oct. 6th.

I know, I know, I'm easily pleased. But if I have to wrestle with my dragonfly or hold my maglight in my teeth on one more campout, they're not going to call it 'going postal' anymore!

One thing to look at is wheather you can get lithium batteries for your headlamp. They last much longer and perform so much better in cold weather. I prefer to carry the few extra ounces of the PT than have to use AAA alkiline batteries.

Petzl TIKKA. For our 30 day trip, I switched batteries once at a resupply, but I really didn't have to. Just didn't want to carry extra batteries. Used it 2-4 hrs each night. Reading, dinner, etc.
I carry the Photon Micro-light as a backup.

RE: Headlamp?
Thanks for all the advice. I ended up getting the Tikka.

I freakin' love it! It's plenty bright and doesn't really need to be aimable as the light spreads out and is aimed pretty much where you would want it. I haven't been able to try it out in the woods yet, but I did wear it around the house until my wife decided it was time to put the lights back on.

The Moonlight was brighter and I don't think the minor extra weight is an issue. I didn't like the wire running from the battery pack on the back of the headband. The demo they had at Campmor had a loose connection and I had to wiggle the wire to get it to work. If it broke in the store...

The Zipka is the same light as the Tikka but has a really lightweight headband - for $10 more. Beside the $, I was afraid it is so small I could lose it.

The Tikka/Zipka loses output as the batteries go flat. Could anyone who has one let me know if this drop-off is noticable.

RE: Headlamp?
There is a graphic on the package that shows 12 hrs, 24 hrs & 150. It looks like half the output at 24 hours that it has at 12.

Sound accurate long time users?

i'm not sure, but it seems to last longer at full power, then maybe drop off, faster, later.

I've used my Tikka [with original batteries] on three trips, a 10 day, 2 day and 5 day.
It seems to be just as bright now as in the begining.
I didn't use it for hiking, just around camp and for reading.

Am I the only one who thinks the Tikka sucks?!

Give me my old Petzl 3 lb headlamp. I like the indent it leaves in my forehead, reminds me I'm really backpacking. Bright too.

The Tikka is all the light I need...when it's really really dark it's awesome!
I have hiked after dark with mine in the Kern Canyon (CA) the sandy trailbed glowed with Tikka light... easy to follow. It's so light you forget it's on your forehead. The color of the light is cool also it makes ordinary bulb flashlights look like ugly yellow lights.

Getting lost and your brand of headlight are almost independent, Biz.

The ticca rocks. Like WW says, you forget it is there.

One night I put it on at home and sprayed my yards with weed killer. I could see well enough to get the job done.

Another point worth repeating...the battery life is awesome....they advertise 100+ hours.

Biz, I don't know what your talking about? You got lost??? Search and rescue type lost or just a might confused for a bit?
If I walk at night at all it's on trails that I know very, very well. I don't think you're an idiot and I'm not rubbing it in...I just love my Tikkas... I own two now!

How well do the LED headlamps work in the cold?

I have the Aurora
Mine worked very well at 20 degrees...no noticeable difference.

If it is cold enough to affect your batteries....it won't matter which headlamp you're using.
