Wasabi Peas
I had the pleasure of partaking of these delectible little morsels while at the gulf(savage). Jerbear said i-am-OM put him on to them.

Jerbear, i-am-OM, help!! Where might I find these tantalizing tasties? Health food store? My local grocery didn't have them. Is Wasabi the name or did I get that wrong? Anyone?

RE: Wasabi Peas
I love these! Our local grocery had them once in the ethnic section, and I've never been able to find them since. They do have Wasabi powder - it's some sort of Japaneese horseradish.

RE: Wasabi Peas
i find mine at a local organic food store which sells a myriad of items in bulk (big bins).
I will check the brand next time i go and let you know.
You may be able to surf around and look for organic food co-op sites where you can order them in bulk.
i mix them with sesame sticks for an awesome trail mix......heh...but make sure you have lots of water to drink!

RE: Wasabi Peas
I get mine at a local Asian market. Bags of peas, as well as bags of mixed peas, dried beans and nuts, and sesame sticks. The owner gets them from a distributor in NYC. I'll check for names and addresses when I go up later rhis week to replenish my supply. Thoroughly addictive - they don't last long. I'd love to be able to find them in bulk, too. Meanwhile, try a local organic store if you haven't got an Asian market nearby.

I like the spicy peas! Asian foodstores are the only place I have found them.

RE: Wasabi Peas
I love these little beans too! I see them all the time at Trader Joe's. There's probably a store near you! So you don't have to go to an Asian store just to find them. Trader's sells them in bags all by themselves or in different trail mixes. They stock them by the trail mix and nuts.

RE: Wasabi Peas
I buy mine at Trader Joes also. But, alas, it is mostly a California chain. The good news is that they are expanding to other states.

I ate wasabi mix on my hike this weekend, which included the peas of course. They are a great trail snack.

RE: Wasabi Peas
I love wasabi peas, they are a great snack and I also buy them at Trader Joes. But, the one time I tried taking them on a backpacking trip as a trail snack, I thought they were the most disgusting thing in the known universe. Ugh! For some reason, I just found them way too spicy and required way too much water to wash down. So be careful, loving something in the frontcountry doesn't mean you'll love it in the backcountry. (The same holds true for some people, ha, ha.)

I'm told you can get the dried peas without the wasabi. I'm going to try to get some because I think those would make a great trail snack.

RE: Wasabi Peas
If you buy the freeze dried peas made for rehydrating, and just eath them crunchy, they are very good. We did that at Philmont. People traded them for other stuff at the trading boxes and we grabbed them for crunchy snacks.

The hot, salty wasabi peas insure you will drink enough water!!

RE: Wasabi Peas
At my little store in NH, Wasabi peas retail for $6.49/17 0z. Snack bean party mix #2 imoto ( a mix of peas, carbos, nuts, and peas) goes for $3.89/12 Oz. It's a great trail snack - just enough peas to make it interesting without overpowering.

The stuff is imported by Rhee Bros, Inc., 9505 Berger Road, Columbia, MD 21046, phone 410-381-9000. Couldn't find an email or web address for the company. Maybe Tom Terrific could take a swing down that way and look into becoming the wholesaler for TT!

RE: Wasabi Peas
definitely need lots of water or tea....

anyone remember that movie "Made in America"? with whoopi goldberg and ted danson (is that the right name...the cheers guy) ....the scene where they are out for sushi , his first time, and he puts the whole glob of wasabi in his mouth.........hah.....
i related...the first time i had sushi, that is what i did with the wasabi.....whoa daddy! i thought my eyes were going to pop out of their sockets, and my sinuses were on fire with steam coming out of my ears..i am sure.....it was an amazing scene....

I just discovered these little treasures. And lo and behold, they've been discussed here before. But they definitely deserve a remention (after all, it's been four years).

Where do you get them? I've looked a few times at the grocery store and can never find them. I saw some wasabi covered peanuts recently which is what reminded me to look for them. I've been looking on the nut aisles.

my mother got them at an asian food market. i have seen them on the shelves of stores like this for years but it was a combination that didn't ring true with me. also, a local carry-out chinese restaurant i frequent has them for sale next to the cash register. again, i have noticed them for years but until now didn't give them more than a look.

Sounds like next time I'm around a Whole Foods place in Birmingham I should go scout them out. That's probably my best bet. They are dang good.

About 2 years ago on a winter trip StoveStomper gave my then 5 year old some chocolate covered coffee beans. He loved them. I've never seen a kid run that many laps around a campfire.

in general i like hot foods that also have FLAVOR. so wasabi is high on the list as it is both hot and has a unique flavor. other hot foods like habanero peppers to me are just hot but add little or no flavor.
