“I saw a program last night about a woman in CA who has a kid that was totally uncontrollable. The teacher's feared for their lives, the mother did too. She said he went to 17 doctors who prescribed a "bunch" of different mood-altering drugs, of which the mother said NONE worked. She said the "system" was close to taking the kid away because he was a "threat to society" in his current state. As a last ditch effort she sought an alternative medicine...THC.

A proponent to the medicinal values marijuana had proposed she at least try it. The mother said she noticed the calming effects within a half hour of her kid eating some (it was cooked/prepared and put into a capsule to swallow as a pill). She said after an hour her son said "I feel happy!" which he had never said because evidently he never was. At 6 years old, the kid said "My head isn't noisy anymore!" and has been a controlable kid since they first started him on the medication. The mother said this has "...been a Godsend!". They cited studies that indicated the calming effects THC has on the brain. Now the kid is 8 years old and has been changed for the better. To me, the didn't seem doped up and appeared as a normal 8-year old.

Unfortunately, now the local and state government is citing her for doing something that, in her words has "saved her son", so to speak...just because it's marijuana. This mother doesn't believe in drug abuse, but she tharoughly stands behind the positive effects medical marijuana has had on her son.

I'll leave it at that, to ponder.”

A few times when my son was a teenager I gave him valerian root at night - what a difference in his daytime activities. I only wish I'd given it to him more often.”

“Valerian used to be a commonly used sleep-inducer. What other effects does it has, twig?”

“we've all seen the commercials for drugs that have horrible side effects (uncontrollable explosive diahrea, bleeding ulcers, etc.) and these drugs are typically for weight control (which in many cases can be controlled through diet & exercise) and anti-social behavior. Marijuana eases pain and stops nausea (show me a pill that can be taken when you are throwing up!) and Marijuana's side-effect which produces extreme hunger can help cancer patients live longer. Of course Marijuana can be abused, so can vicoden and a whole bunch of others. I see the Governments fear of pot to be irrational, political, and ineffective. I've never paid for pot but have smoked it several times... it's everywhere and close to free. I'm sure drug companies don't want an effective drug that can be grown on your windowsill for free to be an option. Imagine what would happen if oregano was an effective solution to male impotence... think the makers of viagra would be calling their representatives? I do...”

“This is what I think.It makes me very mad for one the our own Goverment lies to us about pot.(1)It does not kill brain cells.THC-Delta-9 has it's own receptor cite in the brain.Other drugs like Narco's don't and only block the receptor thus just kill pain.Then the body builds up a tollernce in the peraysamitica system of the brain makeing the person want more.Pot does not do that.(2)The goverment could never make money off of it the way they want to.Becuase people would grow there own.

“It seems that opiates, when used for medicinal purposes(i.e. painkillers), can be administered over the long term, with only 1% of individuals experiencing any ymptoms of addiction after traetment (or 99% of individuals experiencing no addiciton).
I wonder if the same can be said for medical marijuana? Any thoughts?

“Interesting discussion, it’s too bad too many people get hooked on too much stuff. Not sure if it’s genetic or what, but some people are just weak from the get go! I’ve tried too many things, not one has stuck(not saying there weren’t some good trips) except for an occasional smoke of the good #&%!$!

People who need it for medicinal use should definitely be allowed it, but just like OxyContin (intended for use by terminal cancer patients, alzheimer’s patients, and chronic pain sufferers) things get abused and then the big bad government thinks it needs to interfere…not sure if they’ll ever be a happy medium?

Another scary side…I visit nursing homes occasionally for my job, I don’t want to be one of those people hopped up on medicine…ever!!!! Let me die all natural, I’ll take the pain vs. 10 years of that terrible life going in and out of what I think is reality.

Legalize it I say…like that’ll happen in my life, I doubt it!

“My ex-brother-in-law was no doubt ecstatic when medical MJ came about. His twisted sense of entitlement found validation that election day. No doubt, it was a perspective ripe for encouragement within the prison system he so eloquently reviles - and served time in.

The history is unimportant, and my post isn't a vote for, nor against. But it seems somehow odd that he and his ilk waited patiently enough, long enough, to profit from a system in which they've spent years trying to convince us MJ was harmless to all, and beneficial to some. Time has a way of working both for, and against you. For my ex- B.i.l., it worked.

Whatever your belief, the controversy is still enough to create enemies among friends, and debate will continue. It will no doubt drive co-believers to the self-rightous ideology that flouting the law - such as it is - is OK, when it conflicts with your personal beliefs.

“Medical Marijuana is not the argument for decriminalizing pot. It is just an opportunity seized by some. Because there are entrenched interests who want to see pot remain illegal, these oppotunists see this as their only chance to crack the wall.
The argument about "flaunting the law" sounds good, but a person hardly has to be a flagrant law-breaker to obtain and use marijuana. It has been way beyond law enforcement capacity for years and years. Let's stop wasting the enforcement officers' valuable time busting folks who want to toke a weed.

This thread was intended for legalizing medical marijuana, NOT to say it'd harmless and everyone should smoke it. No drugs are harmless... you can OD on aspirin, but aspirin is legal. I don't know why there is such a fear of marijuana. I believe alcohol is far worse (yes it's legal), and it is a proven fact that CIGARETTES are the biggest "gateway" drug. I am just dissapointed that the US government is so against what the states are doing, but then again since when has the Government listened to the will of the people.”

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Carter Singleton says he was weak and lost 80 pounds in five months from cancer when he followed a friend's advice to smoke marijuana, which helped him get back his appetite and gain weight.

Now, Singleton is awaiting trial on a felony charge of growing marijuana -- which he admits he grew in his basement for personal use. If convicted, the 65-year-old could go to prison for one to five years or be placed on probation.

"Carter is not the type of person to intentionally violate the law, but he was desperate," his lawyer, Larry Keller, said Thursday.

The 6-foot-tall Singleton said he was diagnosed in 2001 with non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma. He said he weighed 230 pounds before the cancer ravaged his body.

"I was starving to death," he said. "I did what I had to do."

Singleton said he took his friend's advice but was afraid to ask his doctor about using marijuana.

"I kept losing weight," Singleton said. "I went from a 38 pant to a 30 pant. I went from an extra-large shirt to a large. My butt and arms were all skin. I couldn't eat."

He said he smoked marijuana by himself for the first time on Easter Sunday of 2002. Then he ate ham, turkey, dressing, cherry pie, pumpkin pie and strawberry shortcake.

"I ate 'til my belly about busted," he said.

A county grand jury indicted Singleton this month. A neighbor who saw a flickering light in Singleton's basement and feared it might be a fire called firefighters, who said they went into the house and found the marijuana plants.”
