Medical Marijuana
M e d i c a l M a r i j u a n a

In light of the recent US Supreme Court ruling regarding medical marijuana, I was wondering if you all thought that the Feds should allow people to use marijuana to treat certain ailments.

I think that it isn?t right to deny a seriously ill person access to a substance that could ease their suffering based upon some Puritan beliefs.

The government says that there is no medical evidence to show that it does any good but bans the research??? Gen. Barry McCaffrey, Clinton?s Drug Czar, was quoted as saying that there was nothing that marijuana could help that couldn?t be done better with a couple of glasses of vodka. I?d like to see that research.

I?d like to limit this to a debate over the medical and not the recreational use of marijuana (though with this group, I hold no illusions).

I don?t understand why the subject is so controversial. Medical opium never raises an eyebrow. Could somebody please explain the difference?

RE: Medical Marijuana
I don't have too many illusions anymore but those flashbacks...

The drug laws in this country are arcane.

There is proven benefit for the use of medical marijuana. Of course it should be allowed under doctor supervision. My ex has migraines. You should see the scripts she gets for Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Methadone, Fioriset, Butalbital... I'm not sure of the spellings but you get the point. What the heck is the difference except that marijuana is much less addictive and mind altering.

A man in Sonoma County, California was busted for growing "medical" pot for his alcoholism...gimme a break. The majority of the medical marijuana movement is longtime pot smokers trying to legitimize the use. Either legalize it for all to use and recreate or leave it alone.

There have been medical studies conducted with marijuana. What did the studies show? I knew a blind man who got government pot, but that was a long time ago. He apparently did not get enough, cause he bought it from friends also.

Right on Dunk! What is the big frickin' deal!? They regulate alcohol, cigarettes, pharmacuticals (sorry about the spelling), and hundreds of other things. There are medical benefits, there are legitimate studies. I lived in Holland for awhile, their country isn't falling to pcs. over legalization for any use. Arclite, you are right about prescrip. drugs. People get crazy addicted to the stuff.

Marijuana has been shown to have positive effects on cancer patients by stimulating appetites that have been eliminated by chemo. Similar effects on AIDS patients. Glaucoma patients have praised maryjane for years.

RE: Medical Marijuana
The only reason pot is outlawed is because DuPont invented nylon. For hundreds of years hemp was the fiber of choice for rope making. Then DuPont invented nylon and wanted to boost its sales in the rope industry. Since the heads at DuPont also were in cahoots with the Hearst family, which was a newspaper mogul, a deal was struck. "Reefer Madness" scare tactics were instituted. The rest is history. Sh!t. You could buy cocaine and morphine over the counter until the '20s. Politics, man, politics.

I think that medical marijuana should be legalized, and that research should go forward on it. I can see where marijuana can be used for stress and who knows how many medical circumstances.

Marijuana is not addictive, and alcohol, which is addictive would certainly not be a proper alternative.

We go to South America to the jungles & rainforests to find plants/trees with medicinal value. Why not research a plant that is in our own backyard?

RE: Medical Marijuana
I'd hope that if ever legalized it be in edible form, not cigarette. Seems kinda ironic to prescribe smoking for cancer treatment.

I agree that most who actively advocate it's legalization are smokers. I don't care either way if it's legalized or not but where would we draw the line? Would all illegal drugs become legal or only those that have a medical benefit and according to whom?

RE: Medical Marijuana
The orginal medicinals/drugs were all natural herbs, plants tree bark etc. Only 50 years or so have there been synthetic alternatives. A major cancer treatment is made from the bark of a yew tree (taxo-something). Many drugs handled on an over the counter basis are far more damaging and addictive.

For those seriously in need of whatever relief that marijuana provides: supply it by prescription only, in a different delivery system (e.g. in pill form, not roll and smoke). Borrowing from a few previous posters, if they can make more dangergous stuff available OTC, then they should be able to figure this one out OTC.

bacpac, your friend wanting pot all the times just means they like it. Would you agree that while they are waiting to get it that they don't go into sweats/nervous shaking or exibit other signs of withdrawl?

I like to make homemade pizza. I crave it, and I am happy when I get it. I'm anxious as I eat the last piece, knowing there is no more. Now, is pizza addictive? Gee, maybe it is. I'm addicted to pizza :{}

RE: Medical Marijuana
Medical Marijuana? I'd bet most of the proponents are smokers and the gov recognizes that. How about those that TRULY NEED it? I'd like to hear from that forum. I only hear from "advocates" saying someone needs it so we must legalize it for us....er.... them.

I've heard from those who have a prescription, only to find out they were recreational smokers who some how talked their doctors into giving them a prescription. Probably the doctors figured it would get the nut out of his office, and besides, it's illegal, so they won't be able to get it any ways.

Come, at least be honest. If they want to recreate with it, do it like alcohol and legalize it. Then those who truly need it, medically won't be blaming the recreational smokers.

Personally, if some one needs it medically, they ought to have access to it. I've never been into any drugs, but I think it's pretty interesting to note that no one is pressing for the legal medical use of mushrooms, or heroin, or acid, or other possibly helpful substances.

I saw on a news channel, long ago, that chlorine was developed by the Nazis for use in their extermination camps. This chemical has long since found a beneficial use in swimming pools and treatment plants. I don't know why marijuana has not yet found a legal beneficial use???

Very curious on this end and watching with great interest.

Heroin is opium derived, and there are plenty of medical uses for opiates.

Hemp is useful and beneficial.

I support legal medical pot, and am on the fence for legal pot for all. Probably leaning toward no on pot for all, but it?s not an easy question.

RE: Medical Marijuana
Now really, for cancer, AIDS, chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, many people report curative effects that they just couldn't get from manufactured drugs.

Many seriously ill patients have as much difficulty ingesting medications for nausea as they do food. The medications simply don't stay down long enough to take effect. Marijuana can be inhaled.

Surely NORML has their agenda and the Feds have theirs.

Is it right to let these people suffer needlessly while we debate the 'legal pot for all' issue?

I was hoping to stick to the topic of marijuana as medicine. Not recreational use, religion, clothing or rope. It is an issue that defies such separation.

Bacpac, I never said that Holland has offered us anything special. I just said that the country hasn't fallen apart due to marijuana legalization. Truly, it is no worse then alcohol or tobacco, if eaten rather than smoked it is not half as harmful as the other two. Legalize and then regulate. Draw the line logically, people turn into asses using other drugs. Ken mentioned how unpretty herion addicts are . . . I mean duh. . . it doesn't seem to me that this is a hard one to figure. There are many other uses for the plant, why aren't we using it?
