What's the point of a school zone? I can kind of see the purpose with an Elementry school during the time school starts and ends, but really, how many kids do you see running around? I have yet to see one. Also, whats the point of having them around high schools? Yea, I can see a bynch of high school children out playing and running into the street. They also insist on extending the period of the school zone from 7 am to 7 pm. How many kids are in school at 7 pm??? Why the heck should I slow down when there are no kids anywhere near the road? It doesn't make sense!!
Now school buses. The drivers think that they are gods or something just because they drive this big yellow thing. They go really slow and take forever to go after stop lights. If you honk at them they go slower. I swear they try and trap people behind them just because you can't pass them when they stop, and they do stop frequently. Ahhhh”

“No, not yet, but I think the only reason they are in place is to catch people and make money for the cops. Same for this new crack down on agressive driving. If they catch you changing lanes w/o signaling they pull you over and charge you with wreckless driving, child endangerment (if you have a kid with you), speeding (any amout over the limit), and any other charge they can think of. It's just a way to make money.”

Why do it around high schools? When I ran track, we regularly warmed up with a run through the area surrounding the school.

On the other hand, when I had extracurriculars, or sports, we would often be at school until 6 or 7, and sometimes for practice might get there as early as 7. Depending on the time of year, those are the really dangerous times of day, given the varying light conditions. And to say that the speed zone only applies "When Children are Present" doesn't really help if you don't see the kid until after you run him over, does it?”

“Classes start at 7:00AM at my town's high school, and I am frequently there at 7:30 PM for pickup of my 8 year old and her friends after track practice. If you don't want to slow down for school buses and people of all ages walking on the side of the road, maybe you could move somewhere else.”

“This may sound crude but I have often thought that when I kill someone with my car I want to do it legal. I could not live with myself if I was breaking the law when I do it. I always slow down for school zones, residential areas and small towns on the highway. I think of it as self defense.”

“I passed signs this weekend that said 20 miles per hour during school hours, but nothing says what the school hours are. It was a weekend anyways.

Anything that says to slow down is a speed trap anyways, so slow down. I believe in slowing down when I pass small towns & residential areas. I don't want to run over anyones kids or pets. The residents also need slower speeds to be able to enter onto fast moving roads around them or slow down to enter their driveways.”

“I still think they are pointless. I agree that you should slow down when children are present, but at least around here I have yet to see a kid outside of the high school or middle school, let alone one that is near the street. I'm not really that beefed about the slowing down either, it's just that the cops wait for people to go one mile an hour over and then slap them with a larger fee because it is a school zone. I live right next to a school zone where the normal speed limit is the same as the school zone limit. You tell me that's not stupid.”

Now maybe your area's different. But I know in my area, and those I've lived in previously, schools have been along busy roads, and ones known for speeders. I don't care if the posted speed w/o it being a school zone is 20 or 40.

The street I live on is a 25 MPH zone, and the school is 3 blocks away. People RACE down our street to bypass the lights on a state highway one block away. Do cops wait there? Yeah, on occasion. Damn glad they do (now if they'd only patrol the friggen neighborhood at night!)

I've been nearly plowed by speeders in school zones when school has just let out (this goes all the way from when I was in elementary school, into college). I welcome a cop sitting with radar gun out at each end of the school zone.

Unfortunately, there are too many a$$hole drivers who make these things necessary. If people would slow down a bit, give each other a bit of room, and just have the slightest bit of courtesy when driving (oh, and hang up the cell phone, focus on driving not the passengers, don't try and read the paper or put on your makeup, etc) most of these traffic laws you hate so much wouldn't be necessary.”

“Most of our schools are along roads that are kind of busy, but not extreamly, and like I said before, tho one near me has the same speed limit for the school zone as the normal speed limit (30). It used to be 40. I just don't think that it should be enforced as long as it is. I know y&k mentioned that there are practices and stuff that go that late. Around here everything stops at 4, 5 at the latest, and then the area where parents pick up the kids at least 30 or 40 feet away from the actual road. I know that the High school cross country team goes for runs after school, but they leave the designated school zone anyway. P;us wouldn't you think that High school kids are adult enough not to run into the middle of the street?”
