Building your own web site
For some strange reason I've been thinking of building my own website. Summer doldrums probably. Suggestions for non-tech types?

Can you make a website for free or without spending big bucks?

I've seen a couple places that let you build your "own" site, such as fws1.com and homestead.com, but I'd like your opinions on the best places to get started.

No idea if they're worth a crap, but, hey, it was right there.

RE: Web site resources
For about a $200 investment you can get Microsoft FrontPage. This will allow you to design the website without knowing how to code. It is pretty easy to use, and easy to learn. To host your site, you will need a host provider. You could probably do something for around $20.00 per month. This includes a unique website name and mailboxes. Or, you could always do an AOL homepage, which is free, but nowhere near as cool! Check out my website www.pacsmart.com. The main part of the site was done through frontpage. We have since added vbscript and javascript.

Good luck!

RE: Web site resources
My son built a web-site from the ground up. He coded the whole thing (its relatively straight forward, he was 13) but he can't find a way to post it. The AOL (and other free sites) wants him to use their templates.

If you download Netscape for free, it comes with Composer which will let you make a basic site without learning HTML. You still need a place to host it.

RE: Web site resources
I recomend and use Macromedia Dream Weaver. Free hosting should work fine, as long as they allow you to upload files. All you do is create the pages(s) in a root folder and transfer the whoe thing to the web server. Hopefully if you do it right, the references will still work and you won't have to fix them. Other then that, it's all in the design. If your really adventerous, try your hand at Flash. It's a really neat medium that allows for some really kick ass features. It has kind of a steep learning curve, but there are some really great tutorials included. Anyway, happy building. You also could take a course in JAVA or at least check out a book on it. There's a lot of neat stuff you can do with it.
