Liberal............Conservative
Someone said on a recent thread that TT is a largely conservative forum. What do y'all say? Are you a self identified liberal? conservative? progressive? reactionary? libertarian?

I would call myself a progressive with libertarian leanings.......

I'd say I lean to the left. I'm somewhat of a paradox, because I think socialized countries (not communist, socialized) like Canada and most of Scandanavia have the best system. On the other hand, I'm somewhat of a libertarian when it comes to personal liberties. Live and let live. My number one issue has to be the environment. As Democrats and Republicans are essentially the same in their policy making, with a few exceptions, I've been known to support both sides of the isle. (sp?)

RE: Liberal............Conservative
William Hague says government must provide free cradle-to-grave health care for all. He backs a ban on handguns. He endorses the right to abortion on demand. He supports a monthly handout to every family with children and education subsidies that pay about 95 percent of every college student's tuition.

Who is this guy? Just some crazed, liberal wacko?

No, he's the Conservative Party candidate for Prime Minister in England. Seems their "right" falls to our "left".

I often ask myself. Since the United States is inarguably the greatest country in the history of the world, what is the value of comparing US culture, politics, or status to any other third rate country?

Why would we want to lower our standards?

I try to be a neutral as possible. I don't take sides on "party lines". I think that to a point, both parties are the same, with little quirks that make them different. I grew up the son of exterme liberals and rebeled against that in my younger years as an ultra conservative. Now, I feel that everyone has there place, I might not agree with them and I will fight them on issues that I firmly believe in, but I do not "impose" my thinking and will on people like I feel that some do.

You have every right to do what ever you want to and feel is right, under the law. I don't debate that. I am refering to some people who will just beat you over the head for 18 hours just to hear you say "Yea, your right". In that, nothing is accomplished.

I'm a slave to logic in whatever form it takes. Both the "typical" conservatives and the "typical" liberals are far too illogical for me to align myself with. Is there a Clingon Party?

If you haven't noticed, I'm conservative, but I'm not a right wing wacko. I am willing to hear both sides and sometimes I will take a slightly left view. Now it's not a leftist view, just left of moderate conservative. BTW debating is fun, especially when both people know that they are right and that the other person is wrong.

Moderate, but don't like the government swiping my money and deciding for me who should receive it. I like to "kick the tires" before donating my money. The government rarely passes the kick the tire test. I believe in a strong military, and the government obviously can't run this as a charity, so some tax dollars are justified. Healthcare for senior citizens and children is important regardless of wealth, because it is the right thing to do. But the rest of it? Simplify! Tax code? Toss 99% of it. Study for the effects of fruit flies on the direction of the gulf stream? Let some private citizen fund the bizarre research that some people do.

RE: Liberal............Conservative
In college in the late 60's I was a bleeding heart liberal. After college & entering the workforce, and REALLY beginning my education of how the world works, I gradually became a pretty hard-core right-winger. I now believe the right wing of the Republican part is way way out to lunch, don't have a clue as to what's important to the masses & are a dying breed. I also believe, however, that the left wing still doesn't want to accept responsibility and so are even more out to lunch than the right wing. Capitalism / free enterprise works VERY VERY well when it's allowed to, without government intervention / manipulation. Personal responsibility, with a safety net for those who need it, is the way to go.

Incidentially, for you socialists out there...I work closely with a Swedish-based company, most of the employee's would LOVE to be in our (flawed) system......with their 60% tax bracket & declining standard of living & declining medical care options, the US system looks pretty good...

In the movie 'Casablanca' when asked his nationality Humphrey Bogart replied "Drunkard".

I classify myself as a cynic and register to vote as independent in my home county. In adjacent counties I am registered as republican and democrat, so I can choose whichever candidate I want in the primaries.

RE: Liberal............Conservative
Most people that say they have "liberatarian leanings" don't have a clue what the liberatarian party is about. That being said, I consider myself a liberatarian. In the absence of that, I find myself more comfortable with conservatives, in spite of a few differences with the "religious conservative" movement. Liberals are just a bunch of hypocrits and don't get me started on socialism. But that wonderful socialist utopia over the pond that our country is always being compared to and "they" are always saying is better - isn't. There is not one better think about it, it's 1984 in real life. Go to drudge report and the associated press and get the real scoop. It's what they don't have the guts to print in our papers.
Unfortunatly the sheep in this country want the government to be their "nanny" and want to be a victim so bad that the "brave new world" is upon us already.

RE: Liberal............Conservative
I'm a registered Republican. I have never thought once of voting for the other major party. In all honesty I like alittle of both major parties when it comes to issues that I find important to me and on occasion I have been known to be a one issue voter. In some regards it is the only way your vote is heared especially if one issue is more important to you than another.

I'm not afraid to say I broke ranks several elections ago and cried out for change with a vote for Perot. That attempted seemed to reawaken the nation to the notion of three party competition for the hot seat.

Somethings that bother me are the deceptive tactics of the radical right and the anti gun left. A Orwellian government that controls and inhibits freedoms of ones mind, body and soul. The excessive taxation and pork barrrel spending. Political prostitutes and sellouts.

RE: Liberal............Conservative
I can honestly say that I have never vote for a Bush. Voted for Perot twice and Gore in the last election. The Gore vote was a "lesser of the two evils" vote. I wish there was a strong third party. McCain would get my vote. Something needs to change. Both parties need to be challenged inorder to inprove them.

RE: Liberal............Conservative
I s'pose I'm on the left more often than not.
Last election I totally split my bill: Republicans, Democrats or third party. I voted for John McCain in the New Hampshire primary.

The move to end the inheritance tax really bugs me and nobody seems to be talking much about it (unlike the income tax, which required a constitutional amendment, the inheritance tax was supported by founding fathers).
