New gear
I just finnished reading all the messages about new gear. Due to layoffs, cutbacks and now IRS taxes...I can only afford a can of waterproofing for my old gear. But I still get to go backpacking.. :)

I finally ordered the "tree hugger" straps for my 2 Hennessy Hammocks, but I may be tightening the belt for awhile...the wife's job ends next Monday. Hope she comes up with a new one soon. (good thing I bought most everything I really need during the last two years!)

I didn't buy much for a long time, but now that I paid Xmas off and know that I don't owe the government tax money, I've been shopping. Bought my girls dresses on sale for church, shoes for the oldest who grew two shoe sizes in three months, got a two person Hilleberg tent, got another down sleeping bag at REI, some rainclothes for the oldest, 10 pairs of socks for the oldest daughter at Target, and now socks and coolmax clothes for my husband and me. Still need hiking boots or trail shoes for the oldest daughter, and maybe a pack for her if I can decide on which one. With three lightweight down sleeping bags (and one heavy one), and two lightweight pepsi can stoves, our family of four is ready to do lots of backpacking this year. On our first trip out, we had two heavy bulky sleeping bags and one down bag. My husband slept with a fleece blanket, but of course he was freezing. I'm also hoping to do some mother-daughter backpacking with the Hilleberg tent. Life is good!

Fleece bag
Hey Splash, I bought a fleece bag that wasn't as warm as I had hoped, but I found that if I wrapped it in my nylon poncho, it worked great. I have an old military issue rain poncho with snaps around the perimeter, and you can shape a sleeping bag out of it. Plus you can wear it if it rains.

Went to buy a meal @ REI today, came out forty three dollars later. What did I get? Matches, the meal, a nalgene and some fantastic shearling lined slippers that'll make great camp shoes.

Yeah, G00SE told me about that. Teeheehee, wish I was there. I want to get poured on.

You know, the posts that I find most amusing are the ones where someone gets new gear and then prays for rain/snow/sub-zero cold, etc., whatever's appropriate to the new gear so they can use it. We truly are a warped group of individuals, aren't we? Buncha sadists. Pretty much explains some of the threads, doesn't it?

Well sadly for me but luckily for everyone else that lives around here it hasn't rained as forcast. We're just getting scattered showers. If it had rained as forcast we surely would have had flooding again.

Same here. It just LOOKS like it will rain.

My kids were fighting today. I said "If you two don't stop, I'm going to be forced to take you camping!" That got a good laugh out of them.

Got me a new copy of the "Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness and Citico Creek Wilderness" map. It's the best map by far of the area, according to those in the know. Can be purchased from the Little River Trading Company.

I'm counting on the extra length they provide to help deal with larger diameter trees that can be encountered here in the Northwoods. Options, I always like equipment with options. So the next step will be to get some trekking poles so I can do a Sgt. Rock and set a hammock up as a ground unit in a pinch. Gotta have "reasons" to buy more gear.

SnowNymph, what tiny feet you have! When my first daughter was born, she had such bitty feet, I said "whew! she didn't take after my side of the family." Not true. She's nine now and wearing size 6 1/2.
LyndyS

Snow Nymph, ever have the dreaded "heel lift" when sno-boarding? I wiped out a few times because there was too much "play" in the boots. I tie them really tight...but I still have to re-tie them after 1 or 2 hrs. of boarding.

I wear a size 8 men's....I might check out a size 7.5 next year.

What kind of bindings do you use? I got myself a pair of Flow bindings a month ago (New Gear!!!) for my 12 year old board...very fast entry...just slip in my foot and fold the high-back into place...no need to fiddle with straps.

Stanlee, YES! that heel slides out, especially on a quick steep turn. I've been measured before and I've always been a 5. Do feet shrink with age???? The guy in the store tied the boots so tight my feet went numb. I had to take them off and retie them myself. Felt better. I have the Burton bindings (whatever was out last year, black & turquoise). I strap in on the lift, so I can ride off and follow the skiers. Guess I should put the boots on and break them in a little.
