CRKT is a good choice.” 11:54:14 PM 8/15/01 RE: More new gear! “It does seem REI can be expensive. Rad, it makes you wonder if they'll try and respond to Petzl's Zipka and Tikka. With all the buzz there, you'd think they'd be giving up sales. Who knows. Haven't seen that Black Diamond lamp yet.” 12:00:18 AM 8/16/01 RE: More new gear! “I made a new backpack for $6.” 12:09:35 AM 8/16/01 RE: More new gear! “Is there a pic of it on your website?” 12:12:34 AM 8/16/01 RE: More new gear! “Just got back from A-16. Went to get 15 snowpeak fuel canisters for our trip, and ended up shopping. Got Pretty Rugged Teva's (saved 1.8 oz, plus these are more cushy), zip leg pants (9.1 oz), replaced my camelback (old one has a small leak where cap screws on), another capilene tank top, a Pocket Rocket as a back-up stove, 2 PUR Hiker replacement filters, and a few misc things. A friends daughter got me her 15% discount, which saved me $47. Last night ordered 4 prs capilene socks online from Patagonia. And stopped at REI to pick up sock liners. I ended up getting another long sleeve shirt for sun protection, 4 pr sock liners, some misc items, and the kids fleece pants were a steal at $20. We've got people resupplying us, so now I can at least change clothes every 10 days.” 2:31:22 AM 8/16/01 RE: More new gear! “I stand corrected on the focus deal with the Princeton tec...mine broke years ago.” 7:26:57 AM 8/16/01 RE: More new gear! “REI sure as hell isn't overpriced when compared to local outfitters here in atlanta.” 8:11:44 AM 8/16/01 RE: More new gear! “plus, they actually have what i'm looking for, more often than the outfitters do.” 8:12:42 AM 8/16/01 RE: More new gear! “Rad, You're in Atlanta, that's cool. I've been wanting to drive over and check out the REI store there. Could you tell me where is it located? If you can that may save me from wandering all over. (I've gotten lost in atlanta a few times)” 8:42:13 AM 8/16/01 RE: More new gear! “there are 2, here. they are within about 6 miles of each other. email me at 'deathtruckjr@yahoo.com' and i will tell you where they are, as well as a couple of outfitters and a couple of Galyans stores. hell, i may even give you a tour, if i'm home that weekend.” 9:35:54 AM 8/16/01 RE: More new gear! “tekapo, there is, and instructions on builring it. http://sgtrock.50megs.com/gear/rock_ruck.html It is built for ultralight backpacking, quasi based on the LWgear one pound pack. It isn't made for monster loads, just below 30 pounds. Mine weighs 12.9oz.” 7:32:07 PM 8/16/01 RE: More new gear! “Thas cool Sgt. Just wondering tho, how mesh can be dirt resistant?” 8:15:36 PM 8/16/01 RE: More new gear! “SGT ROck, it looks well made. My guess is most of the weight is probably in those straps since the pack itself is made of mesh. I wonder if that Spectra material would make a pack such as that (ala the Breeze pack) any lighter or more durable. I've heard of homemade packs falling apart on long distance through hikes.” 1:30:27 AM 8/17/01 RE: More new gear! “Sack I made it from weighs 6.1 ounces, so the other 6.8 ounces were the straps and the one draw cord I added. I am concered about the durability for long term use, but the LWgear pack looks even more fragile than mine. And it is used regularly by thru-hikers.” 1:54:21 AM 8/17/01 RE: More new gear! “Just got my 10 x 10 Oware sil-nylon tarp in the mail!!! Dark green, weighs 19 oz. total. Now I gotta seam seal it. Can't wait till fall to use it!” 6:07:38 PM 8/17/01 RE: More new gear! “Maybe I am an elitist, but if I saw SGT ROCK or anyone else wearing a pack made out of a mesh laundry bag I would laugh my ass off.” 11:09:40 PM 8/17/01 RE: More new gear! “Mothergoose made a pac from a poncho. it rides real nice. she just used the hip belt and shoulder straps from and old pac. it weighs very little . she uses her thermarest inside the back as the frame ,leaves just a little air in it and it firms the whole pac up, very comfy fit too.” 10:35:51 AM 8/18/01 RE: More new gear! “Changing the topic for a moment, I got some new gear today: MSR Dromedary Pur Hiker (very glad to get rid of that Extreme pump bottle) Z Rest Deluxe Suunto compass Now, if only I could get away from the madness for a few days!” 12:30:56 AM 9/14/01 RE: More new gear! “Is the compass as hi tech looking as the watches? Sound like you may be ready for NM!” 12:35:01 AM 9/14/01 RE: More new gear! “I got some also. 2-long sleeve coolmax t-shirts 1-silkweight long johns” 12:41:56 AM 9/14/01 RE: More new gear! “The Suunto Partner Compass is simple and basic, but also somewhat detailed in design. And light (.08 oz.) Not familiar with their watches. New Mexico ... ahhhhh. Would love to be up there right now. It's still steamy and hot here now.” 12:48:17 AM 9/14/01 RE: More new gear! “Watches look like astronaut gear. 72 when I came home today. Tropical storm remnants keeping it cool, cloudy and wet.” 12:51:20 AM 9/14/01 RE: More new gear! “Sounds like I'm not the only Gear Slut around here. Autumn is like Christmas for me, all those end of season sales. I see that there is a hose and mouth piece adaptor for the MSR Dromedary bag now so you can carry it like a bladder. Gag! I hate the taste of water coming from those MSR bags!” 8:12:43 AM 9/14/01 RE: More new gear! “"hose and mouth piece adaptor" a slut could really use one of those, huh?” 8:20:06 AM 9/14/01 RE: More new gear! “Haven't had a taste problem with my Dromalite reservoir, GS. As for the hose/bite valve add-on from MSR, I've said it on other threads -- the bite valve is very hard and stiff (try not to get excited gals) to the point of being uncomfortable to use.” 4:13:44 PM 9/14/01 RE: More new gear! “What about trying to rig a platty or camelback bite valve to the MSR adaptor?” 6:10:05 PM 9/14/01 RE: More new gear! “Haven't tried it yet, GS.” 7:28:13 PM 9/14/01 RE: More new gear! “just got back from REI and Popular ahhhhhhh It's like food for the soul, the smell of new gear...my favorite clerk was working at Popular Ü I bought a Petzl Tikka and Snow Peak Giga Power stove (3 oz) I think I am aspiring to become an Ultralighter” 4:38:53 PM 9/15/01 RE: More new gear! “hmm, not as bright as my Petzl 4.5 V headlamp (geez, this thing is so old it doesn't have a name) and the light has a slight blue cast to it.. but, Purty Cool!” 5:11:47 PM 9/15/01 RE: More new gear! “I've put a Camelbak bite valve on my Platypus hose.” 5:20:24 PM 9/15/01 RE: More new gear! “I just got back from the local outfitter too. In addition to what happened this week, I'm mad because I'm supposed to be in the Citico/Slickrock Wilderness right now but I couldn't get out of something that came up suddenly for Monday. Got a few small things, some stretch cords and more Mountain House food. Looked at a Spyderco knife and a Peregrino pack cover. Anyone have experience with the Peregrino covers? Will try to get away the middle of this coming week to Slickrock.” 5:22:59 PM 9/15/01 RE: More new gear! “Spyda-co knives R cooolll” 7:32:41 PM 9/15/01 RE: More new gear! “Need new boots, need new boots, need new boots!!” 7:56:53 PM 9/15/01 RE: More new gear! “Oh yea baby! New down coat, a mere $49.95 from Sierra trading post. Will be just the ticket for this coming weekend and the "Mountineers'" scheduled tundra hikes in the coming months. Good to 15 fridgid degrees with moderate activity. Can't beat the price!” 9:19:35 PM 10/21/01 RE: More new gear! “I just picked up a Petzl Tikka and I can't wait to use it! My son has already forbidden me from using it in the house. Ok, ok, it's the little things in life that make me happy.” 8:49:42 PM 11/14/01 RE: More new gear! “I got the petzl zipka and tried showing it off at work - man, they really think I'm strange now!” 8:59:43 PM 11/14/01 RE: More new gear! “I don't know what it is about a searing light to the eyes that annoys people!” 9:03:46 PM 11/14/01 Eureka:Solitaire tent. “I just ordered it off campmor for $77.49 the weight pack size to me just sounded great!I have never used a tent that light or small before is there anyone out there in TT land that has this tent that could tell me about it.It looks great to me and this year I am trying to cut weight big time. I am going to seam seal it as soon as I get it. It only weights 2lbs 14oz's man thats great and if I take the poles out of the bag the tent will compress real small I bet. Just would like some feedback from people that have this tent. 8)” 6:33:59 PM 4/01/02 “Surprised you went with the Solitare instead of the Eureka Gossamer which has the aluminum poles instead of fiberglass. Either way you'll definitely be going lightweight.” 7:11:57 PM 4/01/02 “I know! Thats the idea!!!! 8)” 7:15:07 PM 4/01/02 “Has anyone seen the "Platy Little Nipper Bottles"? Man!!!!!!!!!!! 8\” 7:01:53 PM 4/02/02 New vest, new fleece, new hat, new faceguard, new “I just bought $125 worth of clothing from REI-outlet.com. There goes all my Birthday gift certificates. Cheap prices! You can't change your mind once you hit 'submit' though...” 7:11:27 PM 4/02/02 The Easter bunny brought... “... a new hydration system for my backpack! I just got a new computer today. Wooohoo! I'm trying to get accustomed to this Windows XP.” 7:15:42 PM 4/02/02 “How do you distract yourself during a 600-mile RT adolescent emergency mission? Take an hour out to gear shop in Madison. A couple guide books at Rutabaga (we stayed at a hotel next door, so my wife and I walked over this morning before checkout) including the brand new Hiking Wisconsin, and one about canoe routes on Ontario and Quebec rivers. Then while mom and kid did lunch at Olive Garden, I hit the sale at REI in the same shopping center area. The Princeton Tec Aurora headlamp was finally on the shelf, so I had to get one, of course. Already tightened the hinge screw. As for items actually on sale, a couple Nalgene squeeze sport bottles, a couple MTS t-shirts, a Patagonia nylon billed cap, a waterproof first-aid kit for canoeing, and some caffeine-laced new flavor Clif bars helped the bill hit the century mark. Shopping as therapy works for me.” 6:10:32 PM 4/06/02 “NEWGEARNOWNEWGEARNOWNEWGEARNOWNEWGEARNOWNEWGEARNOWNEWGEARNOWNEWGEARNOW YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES Apologies to J.G. Got my favorite coolmax wigwam socks on sale for about 1/3 the price of my local outfitter. Also bought coolmax tshirts, shorts and underwear for me and my guy. If you see people walking down the trail with weird logos on their shirts and shorts, that's us! I don't care, though because the prices were low, and we are just going to abuse them anyway.” 11:46:57 AM 4/10/02 Jump to Page << prev
