Minestrone soup
Here is a question for gals only!!! OK, guys, stops reading NOW! This is girl stuff!

Are they gone? Good. OK. I have been thinking about getting on the pill to stop my "friend" from visiting while I am on long hikes. It is such a drag anyway and I think even more of a drag while on the trail. I have heard of women doing this, taking the real pill everyday--skipping the placebos--so your "friend" never visits. Have any of you done this? I don't want to mess myself up.

I know that there is a way to manipulate it. Some of the gals that run marathons don't want all of the fun of menstruation on the day of the race. But...ask your doc about it--I wouldn't experiment without any good medical advice. Explain to your doctor what you are doing and he/she should be able to help. Don't you agree, walkindude?

RE: Minestrone soup
Yikes! I agree that the idea of dealing with that on the trail is not a happy one. But do two things. Check with your doctor, and think about the possibility that it might cause irregularity. Women who are irregular are sometimes put on the pill to try to straighten things out. It sounds like you want to occasionally make yourself irregular. You need to know if there are risks to your future fertility.

Muktuk, I'm headed to the Dr. on Tues to ask just that question. Will report what she says ASAP. I figure if I have to remember to take the dern things I should be able to skip a month if need be!

Mukuk, why did it have to be an Italian Soup, yuk? Tomato soup would have been more applicable, lol.

I've heard that it can be done, and I agree, check with your doctor.

RE: Minestrone soup
Yeah, the "minestrone" business is pretty nasty. Should have just put MENSTRATION none of the guys would have checked it out.

I have a feeling my doctor won't be too keen on the idea. I'll ask her the cons; we know the pro!

RE: Minestrone soup
Thanks Joy, DO let me know. I need to see the doc soon anyway, so I will ask also. As far as the soup LH, BP, and Rad, sorry about that! LOL! My dad used to call Minestrone MENSTRUATION soup. He is kinda warped that way. I come from a very warped family. He forced me to watch Divine as a child (just kidding).

I have a friend who's doing just that so Aunt Sally doesn't visit the week of her beauty pageant (Ms. Maryland. hold your horses Tarpy!! she's got a boyfriend). I imagine that would be preeety embarrasing. . .

RE: Minestrone soup
pisqah, "Aunt Sally", that's a new one, lol. It's not just getting it, it's what it does to the rest of our bodies. We bloat and become bigger than we are normally. Ms. Maryland's bathing suit just wouldn't fit the same. She may also break out in pimples.

Oh, and the mood change! If the judge asks her how we should gain world peace, she may respond, "bring me the trouble makers and I'll kick their @ss".

Don't ask this bunch of fools for medical advise. If you don't trust your gyn, get one that you do.

RE: Minestrone soup
Saw my doctor last month for that same question. She told me that manipulating my cycle every now and then with the pill is OK. You need to ask your doc about how it will effect you. Sure does make hiking a lot more fun without good old mudder nature.

RE: Minestrone soup
MukTuk, in another thread (My daily rant) you made a comment about my half serious, half joking advice to DeathMarch about not working for a prof. you have a crush on. Your comment was in ref. to my being a single mother. Birth control, when taken as it is meant to be taken, is something like 99% effective. I took it at 6 AM everyday (including the placebo during that particular wk.) for 6 yrs. Last Jan. I got pregnant anyway. My advice: Even if your doc. says it is okay once in awhile, don't mess w/ your pills . . . and don't trust them alone as a birth control method.

RE: Minestrone soup
I DO IT ALL THE TIME

What you do is about 3 months before your trip, you go on the pill. Skip the green ones and keep going. The first month you will have breakthru but the second on you wont. Did this last year while hiking with 11 men/teen boys.
FYI - my doctor put me on the pill permently now that I am 40. Helps prevent cervical cancer.

RE: Minestrone soup
If someone is already on the pill, there is something you can do. I'm on the ones where I take 3 weeks of estrogen pill and one week of iron pill. My doc said that if I am ever going on vacation at a "bad" time, I can skip the week of iron pills and continue right on w/ the next set of estrogen pills. This will trick the body into thinking it isn't time yet. Check w/ your doctor anyway...

RE: Minestrone soup
Thanks Ladies. It is just nice to know what others have experienced before trying something like this myself.

Newgirl, I hope I didn't insult you. I sure didn't mean to. I admire you for what you are doing, raising this little one on your own. There is nothing in the world that is more important than being a good parent. I will be 38 in a couple of weeks and I don't know if I will ever be able to have children. Having to deal with a monthy cycle is a constant painful reminder of a mistake I made when I was very young. You can imagine how difficult it was for me when I went back to college in the past few years and saw all these handsome young men, and think "my son would have been this age now".

Ladies, don't believe all the hype about "freedom of choice". Don't make the mistake I did. You will never forget it and it will haunt you for the rest of your life.

MukTuk I don't know how much faith you have, but I believe your little one is safe in the arms of the Lord. Don't be so hard on yourself we all have made mistakes for which we are reaping the consequences. Not to say it was not devistating, but forgivness is there for the asking. Love to ya.

RE: Minestrone soup
Thanks, Wolfsister. Nice to "meet" ya. I do believe that he is in the arms of the Lord. I have alot of faith in Him, just not so much faith in myself sometimes. I have a hard time dealing with the roller coaster at times.
It makes me sad whenever I see babies or any age children really. It makes me really MAD when I see parents jerking their kids around. I want to yell at them "Hey, if YOU don't want them, they can come home with me!"
