Chamomile tea
My herb garden is doing great, and I make pasta with fresh italien parsley, oregano, basil and green onions. I also have sage, chives, rosemary and thyme. My question is the chamomile. It is flowering very nicely and then I realized that I have no idea how you make tea with it. Just the petals or the whole flower? Boil it or steep it in a teaball?

RE: Chamomile tea
My sister used to grow it and make it. I think she used the flowers.

RE: Chamomile tea
It took me years to realize that I am EXTREMELY ALLERGIC to chamomile. Any teas with chamomile make my throat swell shut, I can't breathe. I found that a lot of shampoos also contain chamomile, and my skin is much healthier since I found this out. I always check ingredients in foods and soaps and stuff now.

In China they just steep the whole flower. Great for an upset stomach.

Wow, m-nutz, that's too bad. My older daughter has the same problem with tree nuts (walnuts, cashews, pecans, etc). We have to read all the labels, go on all field trips with her, and carry an epipen just in case.

Thanks for the info newgirl and ChinaChas. I'll try it now. A fellow accountant got me hooked on chamomile tea as a de-stresser ages ago. Great on a rainy day when the kids are trapped indoors and getting on my nerves. I didn't know about it being used for stomach aches. I use mint tea for that.

RE: Chamomile tea
Hi Young, Im MOM nice to meet you. I own 2 greenhouse and sell herb plants for a liveing. first of all you didnt mention where you live. chamomile is the very first thing in the spring to start growing and blooming. they like cool to cold temperatures. They also like to have there blooms picked(which is wonderful if you like the tea because that is what you use) then they will bloom more. the more you pick the more they bloom. If you have only a few blooms this year then just let them go to seed and next year you will have more chamomile than you ever dreamed of. in fact it will grow all over your yard in and out of everything.(the wind carries the seed and they will sprout up everywhere)I just let mine come up and mow what i dont need. if you have any more questions just email me at whitebird6@yahoo.com

RE: Chamomile tea
Thanks MOM! The tea came out great, a little weak. I'll use more flowers next time. I wrote down your email. I live in northwestern New Jersey. It has been cool and rainy these last few weeks. Before that we had a month of hot summer with no rain. Strange weather for here. I've always grown perennials. It took me years to get the hang of growing herbs and the reason is that the soil here is heavy clay. Now I put tons of play sand in with peat moss and compost, and the herbs grow great. So do iris and some other plants that don't like damp roots. This year I am trying to grow vegetables, which is hard with all the wildlife in the area.

The wildest thing in my garden is the wife. Especially when she wears her gardening pants. She's pretty wild. And it's quite a garden. We have no lawn. Just a garden. And trees.

Mom, can we have your hair? I'd like to see what good it does...

It's past my bedtime.
