Gaitors
I found a pattern for gaitors at JoAnn's Fabrics. I guess you could figure out how to make your own pattern easy enough. I was thinking about making a pair.

I also heard of some people making their own custom made packs for "Stealth Packing". My pack is internal frame and to me it seems to have a lot of extra weight that I could shave off if I made my own. I wonder how I would make a frame. Anyone ever done this?

How about making your own bivy or tent?

RE: Gaitors
I've seen it suggested to have a pocket built into the pack (against your back) where your folded sleeping pad/chair gets tucked. This gives support from weight you may be carrying anyway. The lightweightbackpacker site has all kinds of "make your own" plans.

Check it out lightweight backpacker
Lots of good stuff here, but not nearly as much fun as TT. You'll find alot of TTers offering up suggestions...

RE: Gaitors
So supposing you wanted to give making gaiters a shot....does Joann's carry Gore-Tex? Or something suitable for making gaiters out of?

RE: Gaitors
I doubt that JoAnne would sell GoreTex, Kleetn...

MukTuk, check Seattle Fabrics for outdoors fabrics (including GoreTex) and patterns. May have stuff for a tent or Bivy.

RE: Gaitors
Pemsit! occasionally I go with my hubby on his road trips on business. Last year I went along on a trip to Florida. Well, he has a CB radio in the truck and I kept hearing all the truckers warning each other to look out for the gators on the road. I kept looking for the alligators on the road and never saw any. Finally, I asked my hubby and he just laughed at me! "Gators" are tire retreads that have come off and can be a hazard on the road!

Tarp Rat and Kleetn--I don't know if Joann's has gore-tex, but they have all kinds of different sporting type fabrics--some that seem like Gore-tex type nylon. If it's not waterproof enough maybe I could just spray Scotch-guard on it?

I will check out all the links everyone. Thanks. ONE of my reasons for wanting to make some of my own stuff is to save money (that and to be able to have it exactly the way I want something).

I looked at backpack rain covers at Bass Pro a couple of weeks ago and they wanted $25 bucks! for a stupid piece of nylon fabric with a drawstring in it!

RE: Gaitors
Thanks Flyguy6x, SARBoy and Buddur for the leads. OWF looks like it has some good potential for what I might need.

RE: Gaitors
Gore tex isn't nylon. it's a membrane that goes between 2 layers of nylon
