KY Volunteers
No, it's not what you think Rad.
After searching for a long time I finally found an active Trail Volunteer
group here in Kentucky. As fortune would have it the group is active in my
favorite area in this region(Red River Gorge). I joined them for some work on
Trail Days a couple weeks ago and had a good time. The group was fairly diverse,
from upper-middle aged church goers to a pair of pretty young gals. The male to
female ratio was close to even, which was a pleasant suprise to me. I enjoyed
everyone's company and it feels good to give back to the trail. I'm planning
on going to most of the outings this summer.

If this sounds interesting to anyone else here is some info...

Here is the calender for the summer. We are going to try to do two
outings in both June and July, and see if we get enough people attending.
If you are planning on coming to the June outing, please email Nelson and
Judy at trailtamers@meginc.com

JUNE 16TH MEET 9 AM AT GLADIE SHELTOWEE TRACE
JULY 7TH MEET 9 AM AT GLADIE SHELTOWEE TRACE
JULY 21ST MEET 9 AM AT GLADIE WHITTLETON OR SWIFT CAMP CREEK
AUG 11TH MEET 9 AM AT GLADIE 221 OR ???

I hope this helps in your planning for the summer! Both the July 21st
and Aug 11th outings will be near water, so hopefully cooler!!

Our next outing will be Saturday, June 16th. We will be working on the
Sheltowee trace from the swinging bridge north doing brushing, clearing
fallen trees, and maybe doing some tread work. We'll be working with
axes, saws, pulaskis, and loppers. Anyone of any skill level is
welcome!

TIME: JUNE 16TH, 9 AM
PLACE: FIELD BESIDE GLADIE HISTORIC SITE
(directions to follow)
TYPE OF WORK: EASY TO MODERATE
DISTANCE: 5-6 MILES
RSVP TO: trailtamers@meginc.com

All you need to bring is yourself, a heavy pair of work gloves, lunch
and water. If you want to use a chopping tool (pulaski, axe) you must
wear heavy boots. All tools are provided by the Forest Service, and we
can teach you how to use any tools needed. No prior experience needed.
Camping is FREE at Gladie Historic Site both Friday and Saturday night.
Please park all cars between the gravel road and the sorghum cooking
shelter, and carry gear in to low-impact camp at any area around the site
except near the Indian Village. No fires on the ground please!

As always, we will be having the FINEST pot luck supper in KY Saturday
night! All are welcome to join us for the pot luck supper even if you
haven't worked that day. Please *RSVP* to Nelson Jones at
trailtamers@meginc.com by Thursday, June 14th if you are planning on
coming to this trail day, or if you have any questions. Two rules- all
dogs must be on leashes, and people under 18 must have permission from a
parent to attend (form available from the me or the Forest Service).
Thanks and hope to see you there!

Hey crow, maybe we can help for the day if we make it down there in time. I don't want to make any promises until we get our schedules worked out, but I'll defiantely keep it in mind.

RE: KY Volunteers
Well, it's a long story lee. As a matter of fact I might need some advice from ya'll about this. I have a "freind" that lives in Texas. She's coming up for 1-1/2 months (she's a school teacher) and she wants to go camping with me. I used to go camping with her all the time from 96' to 98'. She's a great hiker, cool as hell and easy on the eyes. Problem is, she dated a good buddy of mine for 2 years. They broke up two years ago under ok conditions and he is now in a seriuos relationship. Am I a jerk for going hiking with an old freind?

Buddha Bear, Take it from one who knows...life's too short to pass up an opportunity to enjoy both backpacking and one's friendship..go for it!

RE: KY Volunteers
I was going to say the same as UTAHIKER, life is short and a woman who likes to camp doesn't knock on your door everyday. Enjoy the friendship, have fun and try to be lighthearted.

I will. It is still an uncomfortable situation, but it is worth the discomfort!

Every third post on this site is some woman or man bemoaning the fact they can't find someone who enjoys hiking as much as they do. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

RE: KY Volunteers
yeah; I'll just strap a cross cut saw, a couple madoxes and a couple lopers to the out side of my pack...
...it'll only triple my pack weight...

Should I strap that 6 foot long saw to my pack vertically or horizontally?
