what size pack for 2-4 days?
i wouldn't call myself a minimalist but but i don't like to overload either. also, once in a while i may have to carry a bit extra with my 8yo son but that's ok. i was thinking 4500-5000ci. what's a good size pack for 3-4 days? thanks!

If it were me, I'd go for the smaller sized in the 4000-4500 and look to lashing extra stuff on the outside, if necessary, for when you bring your son since you probably won't be boony crashing with him.

I use a 3500 cu pack for trips up to 4 days.

It's much easier to go with less space in the warmer weather!

solo, i've used a 2400 ci pack for 4 days.

4500 should be plenty, with nothing on the outside.

Thats the ticket Rad. I got a real small one I'm trying out this weekend. 2100 I think. Tent, Pad and bag go on the outside and a compression sack for the clothing in. we shall see. I'm use to a pack twice as big, I usually bring this one alone for peak bagging but I'm cutting down. l

yeah, but the only thing that i had on the outside of the 2400 ci pack was the hydration bladder. it was in the shove-it pocket.

just stuff it, man! LOL!!!!

You need a good 7000 ci. That should hold enough beer for at least the first night.

I use a 21 year old Karrimor, 75 litre (4 500 cu.in.) for everything save day trips or single overnighters. Everything's inside in the summer; in winter it varies: Nalgenes in insulated sleeves go on the outside, then ice axe, third tool, picket, shovel, probe, etc. strapped to the outside as needed.

I use a four man expedition tent (can't afford to buy a smaller one) in a compression sack along with my 20 yr-old -7°C/20°F Slumberjack, Quallofill bag - also in a comp. sack. In winter I use a Cdn. army bivy sack (with VBL and full length Thermarest under the flap) and my -35°C/-30°F Slumberjack in a comp. sack. I travel with a 5 day autonomy (I just started thinking in French - how does one say that in English?) at all times, plus emergency gear.

One revelation was when I realised that I didn't have to pack compartmentalised. Instead of having a food pack, I now stuff repackaged foods into every little space - it works. Good luck and happy trails.

When using a 3500ci pack for a 2-4 day trip, what would be in the pack and what would be attached to the outside?

If I'm bringing a tarp or bivy I can use my 2800 cu in Kelty Redwing for 4 days.

It depends on how much you have to carry for him.
If it helps, I have a 5000 and have carried most everything for us for a weekend before. With nothing hanging out.
As of this weekend past - he's carring everything for himself now!!
