Recipe for water?
I have been using my PUR Voyager to filter my water. No death, sickness or other ailments. I just found out that it is no longer EPA approved as a purifier and I can?t get replacement cartridges. Before I spend hours researching how to purify water, I?m gonna ask you guys. Can I just use iodine tablets along with the hiker cartridge, will this kill everything? I know boiling will do it but I don?t want to have to stop and boil water. What is your recipe for purified water?

RE: Recipe for water?
Rabbitman,
I use the Pur hiker for bacteria protection including cryto. I then add iodine tablets for the viruses (it there are any). That should take care of everything. However, iodine tablets alone will not kill cryto. If you filter with a coffee filter or bandana you have to use bleach to kill everything.

I usually do not purify, just filter with my MSR Miniworks filters. Recently, I tried those iodine tablets with the neutralizer. They worked amazingly well.

Serving Size: 1
Preparation Time: 0:00

To make water, bring snow to a boil, remove from heat and steep 10-15 minutes. Strain into separate airtight container. Make only what is needed and use immediately because it does not keep.

Lately I've been using the PUR hiker and then adding a couple of drops of chlorine bleach per liter.

Oh....I had been planning on just using my filter (PUR Hiker) on my upcoming trip. Is that a bad plan? Do I need to also chemically treat everything I filter?

Over the years I have just always boiled my water. No filters, no iodine (bad taste) When I finally broke down and went with the filter I guess I just got a little lazy. It is just hard to go back. These filters are new to me and Mrs. Rabbit is going to start bping with me and I just gotta make sure she doesn?t get sick.

Great link Violin. I just learned something about cryto. I thought I was safe from everything using bleach. Guess not.

I used just the PUR Hiker for years without any problems with viruses. I thought I was safe from viruses in North America until I read Joy's post.

I can't stand the taste of iodine so bleach it is.

Iodine tratment or boiling will take care of EVERY nasty we know. I was concerned when I found out that the "purifiers" were not approved by the EPA. I had been using the Sweetwater Guardian for years thinking it would protect against everything.

Rather than worry about it I went to an expert. I asked a doc I know about water treatment (he does research in infectious and viral diseases and worked for the CDC for a while). He said filters are all you need unless you are going into a disaster area (floods, hurricaines and such), you don't have to worry about treating for viruses in the lower 48. If you're concerned about a water source boil or use the iodine (if using iodine FOLLOW the directions and wait the full amount of time).

If you are out of the country don't count on a filter alone. TREAT or BOIL the water and don't ingest anything with or sitting on ice.

Please go back to Joy's post. Also, I contracted Hepatitis A twice from contaminated (untreated) water that had sewage flowing into it from a new, suburban development. Where there are people there are viruses - period - saying otherwise is like saying that AIDS and Hepatitis don't exist in North America. Get a First Need.

RE: Recipe for water?
Gremlin, what is a First Need? Does anyone know about the Katydin filters? High dollar but are these the "end all" answer? Spend the $3 bills and be done? My PUR Explorer was supposed to be that, but alas, not so I am told, in spite of their excellent customer service.

Trust me and trust it. It's the only filter that hasn't been recalled, updated, down rated, 'improved' and mine's been working since 1988. I want to change the canister this year, but I've been saying that for quite a while. I purify clear, running Adirondack water with little or no silt and it works just fine. Be carefeul about cross contamination and droping and cracking the matrix. Happy trails.
