Nitro High School?

Band members react
to blast near camp

Vada Mossavat
Daily Mail staff

Tuesday August 06, 2002; 10:30 AM

Some of the 60 Nitro High School band members at Camp Virgil Tate correctly thought the flame illuminating the sky early this morning was a fire caused by a busted natural gas pipeline.

Others -- maybe because the camp had watched the movie "Armageddon" on Sunday night -- thought the flames indicated something more ominous.

"They thought it was the end of the world or that we had a bomb," said Steven Miller, a member of the camp's staff.

Miller said he was one of the first at the camp to see the flame. He got in his car and drove toward it, to find out what it was. He said he figured it was a natural gas pipeline -- both of his parents work for gas and oil companies -- and he headed back to camp.

He and other staff members did what they could to keep the students calm while they had little information about what was turning the sky red about 11:30 p.m. Monday.

Soon after he returned, a park ranger came to the camp and spoke with a group of campers gathered outside and told them to stay calm.

The campers went to the main lodge, Miller said, and were then told they were going to be evacuated so they should go and get their belongings.

After they lugged all they could carry to the lodge, they were told that they wouldn't have to evacuate -- that they should just stay in the lodge, sheltering in place and awaiting further instruction.

The boys, over on one side of the lodge, were calm and tried to sleep, Miller said.

The girls lined up at the pay phones to call their boyfriends and families to wish them a final goodbye, Miller said.

"Telling everyone ‘I love you" and ‘if I don't see you tomorrow,' " he said. Then he added, "Girl drama."

John Gaines, 15, bass clarinet player, and Bryan Witt, 15, percussion player, both said trying to comfort the girls who were crying distracted them from any fear they may have felt.

At 1:30 a.m. today they were still up talking about what they saw.

"A big bright orange light that filled up half the sky," Gaines said.

Some parents who were concerned about their children came to the camp once they could get past the emergency vehicles on Poca River Road.

Miller and Chris Kessinger, another staff member, said they could smell the fire and feel the heat all around.

Kessinger, who was at the Tri-State Greyhound Park in Nitro when the gas line burst, said, "You could hear the flames like a camp fire."

He said he then headed back to camp to help in case the band campers needed to evacuate.

If this is in Nitro, W.Va., I feel sorry for the kids. You know you're near Nitro by the smell. It is truly horrible.
