Deep Thoughts
The following long quote is from "Commanche Moon". It's the 4th book in the Lonesome Dove series. I think it applies to a basic need to camp/backpack.

"Also, he often went back to places he had been at earlier times in his life, just to see if the places would seem the same. In most cases, because he himself had changed, the places did not seem exactly as he remembered them, but there were exceptions. The simplest places, where there was only rock and sky, or water and rock, changed the least. When he felt disturbances in his life, as all men would, Famous Shoes tried to get back to one of the simple places, the places of rock and sky, to steady himself and grow calm again."

This year, I drove the same portion of the California coast that I did 5 yrs ago. I can tell you that I had changed in between that time when I visited again. I experienced the coast differently when I went back. I even remarked about it to my husband.

RE: Deep Thoughts
Once, when we were kids, my younger sister asked me what happens after we die. I told her we get buried under a bunch of dirt and worms eat our bodies. I guess I should have told her the truth--that most of us go to Hell and burn eternally--but I didn't want to upset her.

I never expected to get insight and new ideas from reading a series of westerns, but the Lonesome Dove series is great. I'm currently reading Lord of the Rings, and have been impressed with the parallels to hiking. The whole 1000page book is one long hiking trip.

Tom Terrific, I took the car. I think if I rode my bike, I would have crashed while looking at the scenery. I would like to do that run.
I think we took hwy#1 going down, San Francisco to Big Sur, and hit parts of #101 going back. I believe #1 sits directly on the coast and #101 parallels it slightly inland.

RE: Deep Thoughts
My deep thoughts are dark brown lately. My dad died about two months ago. Now I'm looking at things all different. The things that meant so much to him, like the projects he worked on, his yard, fields and just everyday stuff around the house, in just a couple of months everything looks different. It makes me wonder why I try so hard to have anything or even care about having anything, cause when your gone your gone, there's no telling what's going to happen after your gone. The only gradification I believe you can achieve is something that you can personally appreciate, like a good hike, great scenery, good friends and family. Things that you can't own, just enjoy.

trlhikr...........not only a deep thought,,,but to me...a deep truth......

all the projects and work and acquiring i do i think is just participating in the game of life.........as long as i don't get caught up into expecting those tangibles to be my true peace and happiness......then those are labours of love and challenges in the game......
ok....i am off to happily labour for some beans ....then i can buy gas and gear and get OUT THERE to ENJOY!

RE: Deep Thoughts
trlhikr, I`m sorry to hear about your dad and those are some deep thoughts you`re having.

We come into the world scared, hearing muttled voices, whispers, our own crying and then laughter.

When we leave the world, if we`re lucky someone will be there and we`ll hear muttled voices, whispers, them crying, but most of all, I`ll miss the laughter.

RE: Deep Thoughts
lipstick hiker-
Twice('74 & '80) I motorcycled Hwy 101 from Olympia to California.
101 goes inland somewhere in No Cal and Hwy 1 goes to the coast from the Redwoods to Mendocino(Beano) County.

The Oregon coast was a nice segment of that trip with lots of parks to car camp.
We took our sweet-ass time....maybe four days....to get through Oregon....too pretty.

I am lucky that I didn't run off the road looking at all the cool scenery!
It would be a good way to die though!
