Speaking of magazines...
Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering what magazines everyone currently subscribes to (or not so currently) in addition to the ones mentioned in the other thread.

I have just subscribed to Backpacker for the first time (no repetitions for me). I also plan to subscribe to The Natural Home, and maybe Mother Earth News.

I also get Guideposts, and several woodworking magazines.

I just recently let Organic Gardening, Smithsonian & Moody run out.

In the past I have had many different subscriptions. The ones I can think of right now are:
Sunset
Midwest Living
Architechtural Digest
Reader's Digest
Birds and Blooms
Muktuk

RE: Speaking of magazines...
I had a subscription to Outdoor Explorer but all of the sudden they stopped publishing it and sent Sports Illistrated for Women in it's place. Other than the poor excuse for a swimsuit issue... boring!

RE: Speaking of magazines...
I just subscribed to Backpacker Mag. I used to read it in the library. I liked the article in Feb. about the couple who were so disorganized that their friends would not backpack with them anymore.

I LOVE National Geographic. I especially like the archaeology articles and historical articles. There was a great story about the mountain range near Seattle and how they are ancient lava that is rotting in all the rain. Apparently scientists expect a huge devastating mudslide someday to obliterate much of Seattle. It has happened in the past, like 600 years ago, I think they said. All the geology was fascinating, but the prediction scary, since my sister-in-law lives in Seattle.

I also like Coastal Living, Worth and Economist. Smithsonian and Discover are sometimes good, sometimes very boring.

RE: Speaking of magazines...
Do you want to talk to the magazine-aholic?? At least I write and attempt to freelance, so all the mags are a write-off.

Currently I either subscribe to or buy pretty much always on the newsstands:

Outside (subscribe and have for years... love it!)
National Geographic Adventure (good mag!)
Backpacker (I check on the stands before buying)
Hooked on the Outdoor (ditto)
Either Redbook or Good Housekeeping (I subscribe to either when they send really cheap notices... then let subscription run out and don't re-subscribe till they get really cheap...... is usually one or the other)
Cosmopolitan (hey, gotta have trash!!)
Outdoor Photography (used to subscribe, now buy on stands)
Sierra (need to renew that membership!!)
BIKE (used to subscribe, now buy occasionally on the stands....... great mt. biking photos and great location stories)
Writer's Digest (buy on stands; on occasion I feel all that I read on writing on the Net is not enough...lol!)

I'll buy others from time to time, if I find an interesting article. For me, mags have take over a huge chunk of reading time.

I'll read newspaper stuff on the Net.

Aren't you glad it's a write-off for me???!?!?!!!!

RE: Speaking of magazines...
I haven't subscribed to anything since I got my computer a few years ago. Don't even buy newspapers anymore, and I used to buy them every day.

You don't get the full coverage online that you can in the paper thingy, but just about. More if you surf around.

Backpacker is online, and I check it every few days. They're constantly updating the site with new articles.

RE: Speaking of magazines...
I'm getting Harper's free at school for a year in return for filling out a survey for a textbook publisher, which is nice since we used to subscribe. We get Paddler as part of our ACA membership, and we get Poets & Writers, though that may have lapsed. We let Silent Sports lapse -- might as well call it Birkie Review. I buy International Tattoo Art on the newstand. Oh, and we subscribe to Finnish American Reporter and New World Finn, which are competing bi-monthly mags for the obvious and narrow cultural subset of immigrant sauna worshipers and their offspring. We also get a permanent comp (so far) to the regional magazine my wife founded, published for five years, and sold when we went to China, Marquette Monthly. If you are interested in the U.P., particularly the central region and the Keeweenaw, it has the goods.

RE: Speaking of magazines...
I got a charter subscription to National Geographic Adventure because as a kid I always liked the old National Geographic. I cancelled and asked for a refund 'cause it sucked so bad (IMO).

All it was every month was glossy photos and clever writeups on little known wilderness' world wide for the yuppie set to go do their "extreme" "mountain do" type thing. I came, I saw, I conquered mentality. Full of ads for SUVs that cost more than my house. And, the kicker, they sell you addy to everyone on the planet, unless you specifically ask them no to (read the fine print on the bottom of the index page).

Le Subtil sounds like my kind of person. I stopped buying Flyfisherman when they started printing cartoons about 'unwashed ol' boys with beer cans' vs. flyguys. I don't need the bull$hit snobishness.

RE: Speaking of magazines...
As a media-analysis exercise, I had my Comp. II students compare/contrast copies of Sierra, National Geographic, Outside and Backpacker, trying to figure out what kind of nature-loving person to whom they were being marketed. Most of them found Backpacker to be least outside their realm, as Northwoods youths, as it did not seem as economically exclusive and it was more hands on. Of course they hadn't met any snooty staffers, LOL.

I've have received BP mag in the past but mostly I'll buy from the rack now. I already get enough crap in the mailbox why pay for more. The Net is the best bookstand I've seen in an long time.

Hope you people recycle all that waste!! It is amazing, the amount of recyclable trash that goes to the curb when compared to the non-recyclables.

RE: Speaking of magazines...
Briar, for several years my town made us pay for each bag of garbage put at the curb, over the first one, twice a week. People started recycling like crazy. Now everyone takes tons of stuff per week to the center, plus the town picks up at the curb, a lot of stuff. Every week I take three boxes of magazines/cardboard/junkmail to the center. And every Wed. my whole neighborhood has their blue recycle containers out at the curb. Participation is near 100%.

Lyndy, Has your town's Sanitation budget or the size of the Sanitation Department been reduced?

If not, maybe a letter to the Editor would be a good thing.

Emailed, not a printed letter, of course!

RE: Speaking of magazines...
NJ had a big garbage crisis several years ago, where we tried to ship it to other states, and of course no one wanted it, so costs skyrocketed. The fees were designed to "encourage" massive recycling to cut the town's costs. It was so successful that we now have no limit on garbage pickup, property taxes pay for the garbage that we do generate. Most people still only put out two bags or cans a week. They cut costs again by only picking up once a week.

I have a subscription to backpacker, and boyslife. I buy Mad, Maxim, and some times populer science. Maxim has good articles besides the hot chicks. I think playboy and maxim both take heat from people think there just about the girls, how ever they have movie reviews and other great articles.
