Rt.17 DOES have major traffic
Okay, I went to Campmor in Paramus this Sat. morn. The good news is that right next to each other was Orvis, Campmor and Eastern Mountain Sports. I spent 3 hrs in Campmor looking at everything, so I never made it to the other stores. I-80 was fine.

The bad new is that Campmor is a block away from -------The Paramus Park Mall! Traffic was rough on Rt. 17. Compares to Rt. 10 in East Hanover/Livingston or most of the main roads in Atlanta, or Rt.19 in north of Tampa. I hate traffic but the store was fun. I only bought little stuff, and father's day gifts. Just to see, I looked for fleece bags for $17 but there was nothing less than $35. They have a great book and map department, though.

I usually come south on Rt. 17 from 287 just avoid the northbound traffic. I used to go to Campmor once a month.

Oh, m&m, so you are one of those people that rolls the window down and throws money out every ten miles. Did you get EZ Pass? I used to go to Cape May every summer before I had kids, and the tolls on the Parkway were annoying, but at least you don't have tollbooths at every exit.

LyndyS. The $17 deals were from the REI Outlet. You'd probably have to order through their website. Some deals are only available in store and some only through catalog.

Yeah, I moved down to Florida in '75. I visit my mother in Wyckoff around Christmas. Way too many people in The Garden State for me to want to live there any more.

Got to agree with rad, though. My best friend moved to Atlanta about 8 years ago. I've done his commute into NYC and I've done his commute into Atlanta. Atlanta's traffic is the worst I've ever seen. There's no train/bus/subway infrastructure.

Did you know that Campmor is one of the stores that will give NY/NJ Trail Conference members a 10% discount on gear (in store only)? Doesn't take much to pay back the cost (426 for family) and it supports the AT and other trails. Also 10% off at Ramsey Outdoor and 16 others. (A trip to Campmor has to include a stop at Ramsey in Paramus.)

Basic Rules For Dr
1. Turn signals will give away your next move. A real New Jersey driver never uses them.

2. Under no circumstances should you leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, or the space will be filled in by somebody else putting you in an even more dangerous situation.

3. Crossing two or more lanes in a single lane-change is considered going with the flow.

4. The faster you drive through a red light, the smaller the chance you have of getting hit.

5. Never, ever come to a complete stop at a stop sign. No one expects it and it will inevitably result in you being rear ended. If you want your insurance company to pay for a new rear bumper, come to a complete stop at all stop signs.

6. A right lane construction closure is just a game to see how many people can cut in line by passing you on the right as you sit in the left lane waiting for the same jerks to squeeze their way back in before hitting the orange construction barrels.

7. Never get in the way of an older car that needs extensive bodywork. New Jersey is a no-fault insurance state and the other guy doesn't have anything to lose.

8. Braking is to be done as hard and late as possible to ensure that your ABS kicks in, giving a nice, relaxing foot massage as the brake pedal pulsates. For those of you without ABS, it's a chance to stretch your legs.

9. Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right. It's a good way to scare people entering the highway.

10. Speed limits are arbitrary figures, given only as suggestions and are apparently not enforceable in New Jersey during rush hour.

11. Just because you're in the left lane and have no room to speed up or move over doesn't mean that a New Jersey driver flashing his high beams behind you doesn't think he can go faster in your spot.

12. Please remember that there is no such thing as a shortcut during rush-hour traffic in New Jersey.

13. Always slow down and rubberneck when you see an accident or even someone changing a tire.

14. Learn to swerve abruptly. New Jersey is the home of high-speed slalom driving thanks to! the State Highway Department, which puts potholes in key locations to test drivers' reflexes and keep them on their toes.

15. It is traditional in New Jersey to honk your horn at cars that don't move the instant the light changes.

16. Never take a green light at face value. Always look right and left before proceeding.

17. Remember that the goal of every New Jersey driver is to get there first, by whatever means necessary.

18. Real New Jersey women drivers can put on pantyhose and apply eye makeup at seventy-five miles per hour in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

19. Real New Jersey men drivers can remove their girlfriend's panties and bra at seventy-five miles per hour or in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

20. In the New Jersey area 'flipping someone the bird' is considered a polite New Jersey salute. This gesture should always be returned.

The Ramsey's in Ledgewwod is more hunting/fishing oriented - the one in Paramus has a great camping section with more high end stuff than Campmor (no decent boots though). They shot a scene for the Soprano's there. I heard the owner has a stake in the show or something.

Take back the gear for a refund and buy it again after you get your card. ;)

RE: Rt.17 DOES have major traffic
Atlantans have the longest average commute in the nation - 27 miles roundtrip. Folks in LA spend the most time sitting in traffic, tho.

MARTA goes unused partly because the light rail and bus system covers only two counties, whereas the metro area is more like seven to 14 counties - depending on which criteriumious you look at it. There are Park and Rides on the fringes of the system, but parking spaces are limited. Besides, Atlanta is VERY suburban based. We ALL have cars, and we aren't affraid to use them...

I live in the southern exurbs. I spent last week commuting to and from Kennesaw State U., which is in the northern suburbs - 70 miles one way (@ $.28 per mile - SHOW ME THE MONEY!). I drove straight through downtown. It took me about 1.5 hours each way... not too bad, really. The traffic would crawl at predictable places, ie, interchanges, but would soon resume the 70-80 mph flow. Cruisin', bay-bee!

"Ten Lanes... No Waiting!"

Atlanta's freeway system is among the best I've ever seen. It's actually a joy to cruise during non-rush hour traffic - I LOVE driving. When I was in my late teens, my buds and I used to circle the perimeter (70 miles) and swill beers just for kicks. We would get drunk as bicycles, pump up the 8 track, and harrass peeps on the CB radio. Goooooood times! heh! Crusin', bay-bee!

The secondary streets are a whole "nother" story, tho. Holy cow - it takes FOREVER to get around the malls, etc... I generally stay away from the burbs and city.

I have been tellin' you guys about NYNJTC for ages now. Campmor rules, Ramisy SUCKS ASS. Ramisy may have better stuff but there sales people are ass holes and don't know sh!t about the gear. They don't offer help, you have to find them and there advise is they read the pacaging to you. I'm not illerterate I can read so I don't need your dumb uneducated as$ to do it for me, and then give me sum BullSh!t resone why I should by the product that I don't want to.

Campmor, They sell great gear, there very helpfull they know there gear. They all use the gear and they don't look like some punk there just for a job, they look like hikers that have sampled it and know what are the pro's and con's.

Some of the folks at Ramsey are knowledgeable and helpful. Some of Campmor's people know less than amoebas.

The trick is to talk to the right people OR know all you need to know before you go.

pacpac -
MARTA was originally gonna be called "DOODA".

"Dooda bus go by here?"

or...
DO-DISCO

"Do dis go downtown?"

Only joking, peeeeple!

If MARTA is "segregated", it would be economic segregation, not racial. Rush hour traffic has a VERY diverse mix of commuters.

Some folks simply cannot afford to maintain a vehicle, so they spend $30.00 (?) a month for a pass card. Or, they live near the MARTA lines (read: city), which is predominatly black. But that's changing. Young couples, etc, of all races are moving into the older neighborhoods (property values have skyrocketed) of the city. Their getting tired of the commute...

I've met good salespeople and idiot salespeople at both stores, Ice Tea. I'm sorry that you are not getting the help you need at Ramsey's. I really like the Ramsey's in Ledgewood. My girl scout co-leader was raving about the Leatherman knife/tool thing he bought there. There is a lot of hunting and fishing gear, and the camping department was nowhere near as extensive as Campmor, but I still love going in there. The prices are often lower than Campmor, and I'm close enough to check for sales.

Tents, THE GOSSAMER RULES, no need to buy a new one.

I always figured that we would transfer out of NJ, but the occasional threat always evaporates for various reasons. So far our choices haven't been my favorite places anyway. So we may deal with this until the kids go to college. Then we'll pick a great place, like Virginia or NC.

That might be related to the fact that you don't drive, pay state and property tax, and pay for the home you live in. But by the time you graduate from college and get into your career, you may still feel the way you do. Many people love the city. I like to visit NYC but I don't want to live near it. My area is very nice; I just liked it better when it was considered rural.

Bomb proof is right, rad. These puppies look like I bought 'em just a couple of years ago. I used them on my beach hike around St. Joseph Peninsula. I just drop in a new pair of inserts every couple of years. It doesn't appear as if they'll ever wear out. They're about as heavy as ski boots though.

Yeah wait until you discover realestate prices in NJ, T. Then there's property tax, State income tax, Automobile insurance (highest in the country)...

You couldn't get better service than at at Campmor, aside from the killer deals. Go there every Christmas Eve for the impromptu mega-sales. There's a real nice guy in the packs dept. (though he's frequently off on expeditions)named Chris who custom-fitted me to a discount Dana Design Alpine Overkill. He even bent the stays! I love Campmor, but I love saving money even more. If I'm looking for a significant purchase, I'll check all the others. Especially northernmountain.com. BTW, REI in New Rochelle is closing. Sometime told me that all merchandise is -20%. Are they gonna reopen nearby? Many people always considered it to be in a lousy location.
