Which are the best Southern Balds?

“Would like to go and see one of the Southern Balds? I will be going hiking in NC/Georgia area in Sept. Since the leaves will still be on the trees, I would like to at least see one or some of the most spectacular balds. Any suggestions?”

“Grayson Highlands, southwest Virginia. Spence Field, Russell Field in the Smokies. Don't know much about south of there.”

There's a HUGE bald cypress tree adjacent to Lake Whitney that offers spectacular views of the Atlantic, Cumberland River, Christmas Creek saltrun, and the entire Cumberland Wilderness. Some technical skills required.

“LOL @ Gojo, don't think I have those technical skills. I have trouble climbing a steep trail much less a cypress tree. Not sure what would be worse if you made a mistake. The branches on the way down or those knees at the ground!

The Art Loeb trail in Pisgah NF is my favorite place in the world. Mt Rogers, the Roan Highlands, Joyce Kilmer has some too (though you're better off lookin fer big-ass trees there). The Bartram Trail in N GA is purty cool too.”

Not sure about The Blues, Tom. Maybe it has some roots in Africa or the Islands or something. Ken Burn's show tied in Jazz and Blues, but if that's true, then Jazz can't be purely American. I know I've heard that Jazz was the only true American artform from a number of artists and musicians. There's nothing else like it, with it's improv style, that's all I know.

The Allmans were the best of the "Southern" bands. They had Jazz influence. 'Nuff said.”
