Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “Well, I did it..... I made a Pepsi Can Stove Today! After so many of you mentioning the little stove I thought I'd try to make one. It's all finished , I just need to find some de-natured alcohol. The only thing open at this hour is Wal-Mart do they carry the stuff??? ”10:21:37 PM 6/18/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “Maybe the plans have already been posted, but could you post them again. Thanks!” 10:38:00 PM 6/18/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “One time I took an old-time milk can (5-gallon size, I believe) and painted it to look like a Pepsi can. Cool huh?!! 4-H project. LOL! Hey snacks, I might have photos, but they'll probably all blow away tonight!!!! And, no, I didn't make it to the event. Was it fun??” 10:42:39 PM 6/18/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! 10:48:34 PM 6/18/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “why would you need a stove to cook a can of pepsi?” 11:16:11 PM 6/18/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “Hot Pepsi 'round the campfire is the best! If you haven't tried it you're missing out!!” 12:09:32 AM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “The stove burns better when the burner holes are on the side and near the top...and when the holes are small knifepoint slits.” 7:24:01 AM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “I took a look at the directions. Looked like a pain in the seat to me. Then again I am challanged when it comes to following directions on making things. Maybe one day I'll try it. Then you guys can visit me in the ED when I slice my fingers off. LOL” 12:03:28 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “ED ??? is that anything like the hEaD ? :)” 12:47:41 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “WW Coool... I've made a few can stoves myself. They work great for ultralight ventures, and are very dependable. I've never made the stove described in the link above. I opt for the simpler design with gas holes and filler hole. Works like a champ. Boils 2 cups of water in 4 minutes with a 6.5 minute burn time using 1.5 oz. of methyl or denatured alcohol. There is one commercially available "can" stove that I have been using recently and it performs admirably. I don't know how to do the link thing so you'll have to cut & paste. www.hikenlight.com Have a look. Definately worth the price for hard core ultralighters. Some questions re: your stove... What kind of pot stand/wind screen did you make? What were your boil times? Do tell the details. Inquiring minds want to know!” 12:51:22 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “Hey guys, I just got the MSR Trangia for 20.00 bucks, nice hot flame...” 1:06:57 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “I can't believe you people made fun of me when I said "sterno stove" ...” 1:26:57 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “wwwandrr.... hike-n-light $14.99” 1:42:01 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “BTW... Pewpsi can stove...1 hour of your time. Could be pricey...could be cheap.” 1:44:18 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “I made one myself in about 15 min. but I used rubbing alcohol and it didn't work too well. I have since learned that you are supposed to use denatured alcohol. I'm gonna dig it up and try that. Where would I find denatured alcohol?” 1:49:49 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “anywhere that sells paint.” 1:56:26 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “rabbit... Denatured alcohol can be found anywhere you buy paint. For a hotter longer, and odorless alternative, try methyl alcohol. Look for it in the form of gas line anti-freeze. The automotive dept. at wally-world should do. Bright yellow plastic bottle by the name HEET. Make sure the label says "methyl alcohol". BTW 15 minutes is a smokin time I presume thats for the burner only?” 2:05:46 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “HogOnIce, ED=Emergency Department.” 2:10:13 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “potstand - bent clotheshanger that nestles snugly in the pot. windscreen - heavy duty Al foil, ~2.5' and folded lengthwise. boil time - ~4.5 min for 2 C water weight - 0.4 oz Made my first one last Sept and haven't used my Whisperlight since. Some say they don't work in adverse conditions...but they do for me!” 2:48:12 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “Buddur.. Does the clothes hanger really last? Iv'e heard they become very brittle after a couple of uses.” 5:38:30 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “For my pot stand with my Pepsi can stove I cut a coffee can to the right height and used a church key to punch holes around the bottom sides. Then I glued the stove to the bottom of it. The result is a stove that won't get damaged, won't start a forest fire, is very stable, reflects heat upward, burns slightly hotter and with a simmer mask snapped on can simmer beautifully. I've been using it for months now and I'm totally sold on the idea. I've even stuffed fiberglass insulation underneath the round part of the stove before I glued it to the bottom of the coffee can and that makes the alcohol really boil especially if you put a strip of bondo around the bottom of the pepsi can and use that to glue the stove in. The stove made this way can be too strong for summer use and shoot the flame around the side of the pot.” 10:22:01 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “I love my stove, it works good. However, STG R0ck has a reall good stove on his site. BTW where is he?” 10:59:10 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “The clothes hanger is still going...and going...and going, Mr. Bears. The last stuf I used was a strip of chickenwire-like woven & soldered mesh...that crap gave out quickly!” 11:17:53 PM 6/19/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “10 Bears....haven't gotten that far yet. I make $25.00 per hour and I have about an hour invested already... but I just wanted to try to make one. ;) Picked up some alcohol today, did a little test burn this evening. Buddur... I think I have the burner holes to large I'm getting a pretty large flame....should the flame be 8 inches tall???” 12:52:07 AM 6/20/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “Hmmmmmm...8 inches does sound a little high. However, the flames are subdued when the pot rests overtop.” 7:21:46 AM 6/20/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “Guess I'll get busy and make a pot stand and a wind screen and see what it does then.” 9:02:04 AM 6/20/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “there was a HUGE pot bust in atlanta, today!” 9:02:54 AM 6/20/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “Sorry to hear of the bad news, Mr.Rad!” 2:07:14 PM 6/20/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “yep. business will be slow, for the next few weeks.” 2:09:24 PM 6/20/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “How do you make a pot stand out of a clothes hanger?” 3:59:03 PM 6/20/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “Cut and straighten a coat hanger. Use a sandpaper to remove any paint or coatings. Bend the coat hanger wire (or any large gauge wire) into a shape that will hold a pot a few inches above the burner (see the link). http://wings.interfree.it/ Check out the G. LaMar Kirby stove” 5:45:27 PM 6/20/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “I cut and straightened a coathanger, bent it in a zig-zag fashion, then bent it around the side of my pot to make it round. Then bent it a little more so it fit inside the pot around the inner wall. The zig-zag bend is such that it holds the pot ~1/2 inch above the burner, and having three points of contact (tripod-like) for both the ground and pot. That Wings site is getting crazy, I mean with all the same stoves but different people taking credit for the stoves based on their own slight modifications. I should do the same! NOT!” 12:17:10 PM 6/21/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “You know..... Camp stoves can be quite expensive, but you can get a decent one for $30 or so... Break down and spend the cash man!” 5:19:32 PM 6/22/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “WindWalker, I just wanted to say that I think it is really cool that you did this. I told my mom about how cool it was and she told me that my dad and his friends once did a similar thing w/ a tuna fish can.” 5:37:45 PM 6/22/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “...way back in the olden days and used blubber.” 5:42:01 PM 6/22/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “Nothin' like that. I don't have anything against the old people, man.” 6:52:45 PM 6/22/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “wally~...I'm just playing around with it ! But a stove that weighs in at less than a half an ounce deserves a second look wouldn't you say???? I own 2 MSR stoves, a whisperlite and a old Model G, they both function very well my Model G is 18+ years old and still sounds like a jet engine. ( and simmers like a jet engine)” 7:28:15 PM 6/22/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “Backpacker Mag has an article about a Tuna Can stove that wieghs...get this...5 oz. I don't believe it!” 6:15:50 PM 6/23/01 RE: Made myself a Pepsi can stove today! “My dad was obviously way before his time.” 6:30:52 PM 6/23/01
