31 miles. South bound on the AT in VA. Dragon's Tooth was around the 1/2 way mark for the day. I had intended to do 28 miles but I lost the trail about a mile from the shelter. While I felt good about myself at the time for doing it I had a schedule to keep. If my time were more open I would have kept the milage around 10 miles and spent more time exploring off trail.

RE: Yes a hiking thread.
Maybe these spelling comments are like picking on someone for not being able to see without glasses? I am as guilty as anyone of picking on him but that was before I came across these excerpts:

"I would realy like every one to get off my a$$, about spelling.

I have tryed very hard to fix spelling, I nolonger use acronyms, and I have improved from my threads & post from a few month ago.

I have tried so hard to please every one on traid talk and not use acronyms, and careless spelling.

PLEASE STOP bitching about typos.

I do ask that you guys can show a little slack to me. Because I am, hear at trail talk to learn about the outdoors and tell people what I do know about the outdoors.

I will continue to try to catch as many errors as I can before the I post. For the past month, I have read all my post at least once prior to posting, spelling and grammar checked, except for when I am on a Mac, because there is no spelling or grammar checking utilities on them. I tell you this so you no that I am trying to fix the problem, and so you know that it is NOT that I just don't care.

So far, I've only done about 4 miles total. But in my defense, the last 1/2 was straight up a stinkin' mtn. I don't think that I am into distance, I just want it to be pretty.

No. I didn't lurk. I came here when the troll(?) Burnt Toast invited people from another board to check this place out and felt right at home.

I got to those posts when I wanted to check out what someone (to remain nameless) meant when they said they got out of line on a thread.

RE: Yes a hiking thread.
At the time I set my personal distance record I was doing a 1/2 hike of the AT and doing twenty miles(or so) most every day. The original plan for the day was 26 miles of trail with a 2 mile road detour to buy a 6 pack of beer. By the time I got un-lost it was dark and I was totally drained of energy. I did two solid face plants on the last couple miles, tripping over unseen roots in the dark. After fetching water and eating dinner I fell slick asleep before I could even drink one of those beers. Had to carry them another 20 miles to enjoy them the next night.

NakedApe can verify that AT thru hikers consider VA an easy section because of the long ridge walks. Most of them do 20+ miles thru that section.

From Yosemite Village to the top of Half Dome and Back. Does anyone know how far that is? I forget. I did it another time, but in two days. There are other hikes off trail that I have no clue how far they were.

Walkincrow, how often did you stop to rest, and how much time did you spend hiking during that day? I am lucky to get 15 miles some days, but I am a bit of a slacker. No pain means plenty of good sleep.

RE: Yes a hiking thread.
Tahoe, Being a kinda tall guy I have a long stride that allows me to hike an average of 3 miles per hour. An extra mile an hour makes a big difference at the end of ten hours of hiking. On that trip I really didn't stop for many rests during the day. Once I get in the grove I just chug along. Usually I'll take a 15 min. break about 6 miles into the day to snack and then about an hour for lunch.

I just dug out the old journal from that trip and was reminded that I ran out of water a few miles from camp that day. That sucked but I was afraid the streams I crossed in the evening might be polluted because the data book didn't list them as water sources.

All told I was on the trail about 12 hours that day.

RE: Yes a hiking thread.
That is some serious ground coverage. I like to stop every couple of hours, if not more often. But then again when I hike I usually don't have any place to be at any time. Every now and then I do have to make it to a specific campsite if I am in a wilderness area. On days like that, I try not to have much more than 6 or 7 miles to cover after lunch.

My longest day recorded was 18 miles in Talladega NF. The fuct up thing is that we only did about 2 miles the next day to complete the loop.

Very impressive distance Walkincrow.
Now we have our goal. 31 miles is the distance to beat. Who's in?

RE: Yes a hiking thread.
Newgirl; don't worry about what milage other people do. Hike your own hike.

Like I said before I had a set date to be done by on that trip. There were a few people that were doing over thirty miles a day for over three months straight. One guy I met, Skipsalong, was doing over 40 miles a day.

Enjoying yourself is the most important thing. Daily milage is trivial in comparison.

17 miles including a climb up Mt. Marcy (in NY)...

but that was far easier than the 13 mile loop up and around Mt. Katadin (Maine).

I have a feeling they'll both be dwarfed by the 9 miles up Rainer...

Walkindude; knock yourself out. I was pretty trail hardened by a month on the trail at that point. I wouldn't even try it these days.

There is an annual event in Maryland where people hike the entire AT section in that state, 40ish miles, within 24 hours. Even without a packs that's still haulin'.

I really can't recall. I can say it has never been anything near what Walkincrow has done. Crack that whip!!! But the times I have been on the AT and met some thru or distance hikers that have been trail condition for weeks, twenty miles in a day was no sweat.

I'm not out there to punch out the miles unless the day is looking like crap.

Eighteen miles once, and that was too far. Twelve miles once in five and a half hours, with eight of it up a ridge line, that was the hardest. Ten miles is just about right, eight if my sweety is with me.

RE: Yes a hiking thread.
Once did a hike covering 60 miles in three days(24, 20, 16). As I remember, about 10,000' accumulated elevation gain. I was a young buck then.

In recent history, I did a solo overnighter last year covering 32 miles (17, 15). About 5000' accumulated elevation gain.

On average, I like to hike anywhere from 8 to 10 miles a day. However, if you add up all my trips in a year the avereage is probably closer to 6 miles.

newgirl, just work yourself up to longer distances. If I limited my trips to only short distances I would miss out on a lot of territory. Rather then take a few "big" trips per year I am out every other week for at least two, and often 3 days at a time. Being able to put down some miles allows me to see a lot more. And really, 8 miles a day is not that bad during the summer months. You have lots of daylight and can take plenty of rests. Of course the previous advice stands, hike your own hike and heck with the rest of us. ;)

RE: Yes a hiking thread.
I have done many long days, but a particularly punishing one was on the Ptarmigan Traverse in the North Cascades. We hiked from White Rock Lakes over Spire Pass, past Cub lake, and out to the car. It was probably around 20 15 miles, but the packs were very heavy, maybe 70 pounds. We were in fog from the lake, and did a lot of zig zagging in the fog on the snow field below the ridge of Spire Pass before we actually found the pass. Then we were in fog and rain to Cub Lake, traveling by compass, and in non stop rain out to the car, which we reached at about 3AM.

Another long hike was in the Stuart Range of the Cascades. We hiked up to Stuart Lake, and from there on up to the meadow below the north ridge of Stuart. From there we went cross country through rough country back to the starting point, with a round trip of maybe 18-20 miles. This one was with a light pack, however.

I limit myself to 8-10 miles per day. I can't recall ever trekking more than that, actually.

Newgirl, we're all here to enjoy the hike. Enjoy it as you will. Though what ChinaChas said is also true...if you only go a mile or two at a time, you won't make it into the really remote areas, and you'll miss out on some good stuff.

I did about 25 miles one time, by necessity. We were hiking the JMT, and after hiking about 12 miles including Selmer pass, we got into camp. My brother never showed up so after a while a few of us went back on the trail to find him. We hiked back 6 miles or so, and found him with a pulled muscle in his groin. We took his pack and he was able to walk at a crawl on to camp. That was another long day.

She says, "Well if you don't learn how to dance you are gonna have to keep pulling it."
