Boone NC ?
My wife and I are renting a cabin around Boone in mid July. I will probably take 2 solo day trips (the wife's very pregant). I'm planning on taking one trip around Roan Mtn. and the other around Grandfather Mtn. Any suggestions as to better alternatives or specific trails will be great.

How pregnant? I took a 1/2 day hike down to a nice and not often visited falls in Yellowstone when I was 6 months pregnant. The exercise might actually feel good, if she isn't more pregnant than that. The last trimester is mostly about laying around and wishing you could move better.

One of my favorites is the Profile trail off 105 near Baner Elk on Grandfather Mountain. Or you can drive to the top of Grandfather Mtn. and take some great hikes from there. The Linville Gorge area is really nice, too. Roan Mtn. from Carver's Gap is also a great hike.

RE: Boone NC ?
just spent some time in boone,
blowing rock area.
tanawha trail is 13 miles, but can
be taken in sections,by accessing off blue ridge parkway.this trail
is on the side of grandfather
mountain.one access is from linn
cove viaduct visitors center
where trail info can be obtained.
this is abeautiful area.
one of my personal favorites is
the 2 mile trail around julian
price lake,a clear blue lake
surrounded by mountains.
this is near blowing rock which
if you have not made reservations
for boone, you may want to consider
this small mountain community.

Sorry about trashing your thread, dayhiker!! Kyhiker, I'm in SW end of the state, loooove Big South Fork, have done some of the sheltowee, have you done the ridge trail at Cumberland Gap yet? Cool trail. Watch for fall hikes in KY, TN area. Walkindude and/or I will be hosting at least one or two. Barb lives at Cumberland Gap.

Where is Boone? Duh, I've heard several mentions of Grandfather Mt. and hazards of Roan area, but not sure where they are. Didn't JerBear just get back from that area?

boone is in n.w. north carolina,
near where n.c.,virginia and tenn. meet.
it is acollege town, appalachian state u.
blowing rock is high in mountains
just off blue ridge parkway.
have not been on ridge trail, every time i get to southern ky.,i end up in stearns ranger district or at big south fork.yahoo falls area is closest
for me.will be in big south fork
in sept.
just returned from boone area sun.
it was really beautiful -many nice trailsnear wilson creek,
and grandfather.
grandfather mountain is privately
owned,permit is required to hike
on private sections, but is well worth it.
many short day hikes are off the blue ridge parkway, leading to good views.

RE: Boone NC ?
I second exactly what skiracer said and must warn that you need to let the little lady know that you won't be worth a plug nickle after the profile trail. LOL!But boy will it be worth it!

RE: Boone NC ?
Thanks for the info. My wife will be about 22 weeks pregnant and she's not into hiking. We also have a 16 month old. I'm looking for loops in the 8 to 12 mile range. Thanks for the info.

About 45 min from Boon is the Lost Cove trail (Wilson Creek Wilderness area). About 8 miles. Take it COUNTERCLOCKWISE!

We did a TT group trip there this spring. Beautiful trail!
