Great places to eat on way to trail...
Mountain Mama offered some dining advice in her thread and I thought that's a good idea. How about we share those special places when going to or taking a break from the trail??

I'll start with two:

COLORADO--Beau Jo's Pizza in Idaho Springs (the original, right on I-70, maybe 1/2 hour west of Denver), Colorado Springs and other assorted locations. World-famous. You get honey to eat with your end pizza crusts when done. Yummmmmmmy. Try the Mountain Pie. (I will always hit a Beau Jo's on a Colorado trip!!)

UTAH--The Bit & Spur Mexican Restaurant & Saloon in Springdale, Utah, just outside Zion N'tl Park. Great food. Yes, they even have liquor. I forget if it's liquor and not beer, or vice versa. Whatever, you get a little alcohol in what is often a "dry" state.

Hilltop Restaurant, Hwy. 41 South, L'Anse, MI. When crossing the U.P. on your way to either the Porkies or Isle Royale, stop in for a monster cinnamon roll. As my brother said to me when I came back to the car with the bag, "You didn't need to get a dozen." Then I opened the bag and showed him it was 2. You can live for a couple days on one of these babies.

Oh...... and the best Indian fry taco in the world in a small cafe on the southern edge of the small town of Interior, SD, just outside Badlands N'tl Park. Good pie too!

The Home Place in Catawba, VA.
All you can eat home cooking; the food and the service is awsome.

Young's Dairy outside of Yellow Springs, OH. The food and the service is mediocre(sp?) but the milk shake is the best I've had. The milk comes from the dairy herd outback.

The Rainbow Door aka Miguel's Pizza in Slade, KY. Made from scratch.

Anybody else remember HA-HA's Pizza in Athens, OH? MMMMmmmm.

Hey lizs, I think running girl and boy have been to that pizza joint in Idaho Springs. We all went out to Denver one time when I had business and her brother took them. They said it was awesome. They didn't even bring me back a slice.

The "Iron Door Saloon" west of Yosemite on hwy 120 in Groveland. Oldest bar in California (or so they say).

When hiking Death Valley hit the small town of Shoshone and visit the "Crowbar". Decent food and good drink. You might find the sheriff inside knocking one back.

And the "Home Place" mentioned above is awesome.

I guess Quincy's in Damascus, VA could be mentioned here. Just a pizza joint w/o flair but I had fun.

The Double Muskie Inn on the way to Crow Creek Mine in Alaska. If you want to BP there is a 25 mile pass through the Chugach Range and you end up in Eagle River. I never did the 25 mile hike, but flew over in a chopper...Beautiful! Saw lots of Dahl Sheep, etc. Incredible food at the Double Muskie Inn! How about a 2 inch thick NY strip steak that melts in your mouth, with a bernaisse sauce, fresh asparagus and a huge baked potato. Haven't been there in a few years. Rumor has it that the one-time owners were once part of a big cocaine ring or something like that.

Calnatv: A restauranteur admitting they like Jack in the Box?! Go figure! This is your chance man...

Okay, even though I haven't been there, I'll do the honors. When in Eureka (CA), the place to eat is the Sweet River Grill and Bar!

When in or near any of the numerous areas close to Randall, Washington (Mt. Rainier, Mt St. Helens, Goat Rocks, etal), stop at the Big Bottom Bar & Grill.

Order the Big Bottom Burger. Share an order of curly fires. You won't be sorry.

I've planned a lot of trips around being in Clayton, NM for breakfast at the Hi Ho Cafe. On my way into the mountains I often stop at the last civilized place to grab a foot-long Subway sandwich. Those always taste better while smelling pines and watching the sun go down.

baume 66....... and you MARRIED this woman???!? LOL....... I guess Beau Jo's will ship frozen pizzas all over the place. I used to have the info, cuz I thought I might need a "fix!" Beau Jo's is aslo fun cuz they give you (or your kids .... or YOU, knowing Trailtalkers! lol) crayons and you can draw designs on the napkins. They then staple'em to the walls everywhere. They're fun to look it.

Pantscandy, if you ever take the other way to Yosemite (140) check out Mel's Old West Barbecue Pit in Planada east of Merced. Great barbecue sandwiches, and last I checked they still had 25 cent draft beer--terrible beer, of course (Oly), but at 25 cents who's complaining?
