Great places to eat after hiking

“I just read the 'Great places to eat before hiking' and it made me a little crazy. How about afterwards? Mine is The Cottage in Lake Placid, N.Y. Nice, somewhat elegant in a laid-back sort of way, eclectic food and a kick-ass terrasse over Mirror Lake - also a pretty good selection of beers. For just beers, I like Tiffany's, also in Placid.”

“When coming out of the Wind River's in Wyoming, you have to have to stop in Hudson. There is two places, Svealer's and El Toro. They both serve the best steaks in Wyoming.”

I have fond memories of Denny's in the South. Is that okay? Mostly I went to the small places and enjoyed some pretty great food. I usually avoid chains. There's a Pancake House up here which must be pretty much the same thing. None of that in Quebec, however. Breakfast here is breakfast - breaking the fast. Breakfasty stuff at noon etc. is foreign to us.”

“A Western Bacon Cheeseburger from Carl's Jr gets me home where I can get that hot shower I really need. Then, I work on putting a big dent in the couch with a pizza in the oven or waiting for the pizza guy to show up at the door. Follow that up with some Mother's Chocolate Chip Cookies and major vegetation on the couch and I'm in heaven.”

“Poppy's in Estes Park!!! They've got the best cheese bread and pizza. They've got tons of other stuff too, but the white pizza with blk olives, mushrooms, sauted onions and green peppers. Yummy!!! the sauce isn't alfredo, it's sauteed garlic and olive oil.”

“The Harbor Haus in Copper Harbor, MI, at the tip of the Keeweenaw Peninsula. After you get off the ferry from Isle Royale, stop in for planked lake trout or whitefish, fresh from the water you just crossed. Also German specialties such as sauerbraten, rouladen, wursts, schnitzels and potato pancakes.”

“One place that's NOT a good place is sitting around a campfire in a car camping parking lot eating campbell's Chuncky...next to a group that was grillin' steaks and drinking beer. We had just done the knife edge on Katahdin, I was really to kill for one of those hunks of meat.

“We ate at this awesome little diner in Woodstock, NH, after the Whites trip. Fresh squeezed orange juice, home baked bread, small town friendly service, and great food. The cook even came out to say hi and make sure everything was great.

Ahhh, the post-hike meal. Quality group bonding, gooood times. :o)”

BTW... the restaurant is ever bit as good as the reviews (links from the site) say it is. To read the Union Leader review you may have to insert "Sunny day diner" into the search box.”

“I usualy stop at 7 eleven, or I just grab something from a gas station when I fill up.
That 7 eleven pizza, some penut m&m's, a pack of Marlboro lights and a coffee usualy kicks some ass after an overnighter, especialy in the winter!”

“The Oaks Restaurant on Highway 38 in Angeles Oaks near the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Very popular among hikers. Try the potato salad even (if they leave the skins on the potatoes).”

“Yokum's Motel Diner in Seneca Rocks WVa is pretty good but their food was better several years ago.
They used to have "real" home fries and a good "trucker's" breakfast.
Now they have that frozen "potato sh!t".
The chili ain't what it used to be either.

The kids like to stop at Arby's in Petersburg WVa....they have Jamocha Shakes....not bad.
I think the "roast beef" sandwiches and fries are laced with MSG or some other addictive chemical.
I suppose three or four times a year won't kill us.”

“Vermillion Cliffs. They serve great food in the middle of nowhere but right on our way home from the North Rim. Fresh trout, baby back ribs... I don't drink it but they have a HUGE collection of beer--100 kinds perhaps.”

“There's a great roadside diner on thr 395 in Olacha that I can't remember the name of anymore. It's about an hour south of Lone Pine. Used to go there every trip, but since I discovered the buffalo burgers at the Whitney Diner in Lone Pine, accompanied by tall, cold beers and the big screen t.v., that is now my post-hike, and often my pre-hike, haunt in the eastern Sierra.

Maybe this year I'll hit one of these on the way up, and the other on the way back? Hmmm....”

“Ahh, the first meal out, one of the main reasons to go!

After 7 days in the Winds last year the prime rib dinner at the restaurant in Pinedale, north side of the street, Stockman's I believe, really hit the spot. But, as I have said before, after a hike the spot is a pretty easy target. We got there before we could get showers, my pants were ripped out so I had to tie my jacket around my waist to cover my unders, they let us in and kept the diet coke full and the food coming. Dang near foundered myself.

The biggest disappointment was the year before, couldn't get into Big Sandy Lodge for dinner, so we drove to Rock Springs. Hotel attendant recommended some greasy spoon dive with a good name and bad food. What a let down! I told the folks I was with next year I am bringing a Ben Franklin just for the first meal out.

Amen Chief about the steak houses in Hudson, good to know they are still there.

On short hikes my retired hiking buddy likes to stop at a Dennys for breakfast, any time of day. It hits the spot.”

“We always used to stop at Austin's drug store in Lone Pine, when returning from Sierra trips from the Owens Valley. They had the best milk shakes ever! In Washington, there is a cafe in Lynnwood near the freeway that has great pies.”

“Comming out of the NC Smokies: The Jarrett House at Dillsboro, NC on Hwy 441. Family style serving all you can eat!”

“Explorer, I've eaten in that diner at Olancha! It is a good old place, or was. Is it still around? Ever climbed Olancha peak? It was my first Sierra peak, in about 1967, and I got deathly sick from altitude at 12,000.”
