Watcha' Up To
What's everybody doing w/ their weekend? Just wondering. I'm real bored. I have nothing to do at work today. I mean, it's worse than usual.

Had to cancel on a 3-dayer to some alpine bliss...I'm pretty pissed! There's always next weekend though.

Any PNW trips being planned for the summer?

With a little luck I'LL FINISH MY GD CORRECTING early to-morrow afternoon. Then there's a big party to celebrate a colleague and friend's 25 years of teaching.

It's the Saint-Jean-Baptiste holiday here and Monday we're off. I'm planning to get into either Elk Lake Sunday to do South Dixe, East Dix, McComb and Hough or in to Bradley Pond and do Coucsaschraga (sp?), Panther and Santanoni. Supposed to be hot.

My oldest daughter's dance recital is Saturday. It's a big school so they broke it up into 4 separate shows. She's in two shows: the 12:30 and 7:00.

Welll...we are getting a new roof on our house on Saturday. We get to hang out around here. I am taking out about one-third of the grass in my backyard and reseeding it with wildflowers.
Later this summer we are putting in a rustic fence made from old Osage Orange fence posts that were stockpiled on my hubby's family farm. Should look really nice once done.

Will probably start Saturday by taking the dog for a hike. Then it's yardwork for hours and hours. Making my flower beds bigger since my grass refuses to grow. I'm supposed to go bowling (makes me sound old) Saturday night but I may cancel if my body aches too much. Baby shower on Sunday.

Dayhiker ever been to Destin before? Beaches are tops, no exaggeration. Best in Florida by most accounts.

Destin/Santa Rosa is one of the few areas along the Gulf Coast I'll travel to in the summer. In fact I'll probably be spending a few days at the beach there pretty soon. In the water it doesn't feel quite as hot.

Otherwise, no pbacking for me till fall unless I can get away somewhere west of the humidity line. Maybe I'll go out to the West Coast in a month or two. Cool Pacific air, fog ... like dying and going to summertime heaven.

I might try to learn to surf this weekend (yeah, I know, east coast transplant trying to live the California dream jokes are allowed).

That and maybe a good long day hike on Sunday in Marin.

RE: Watcha' Up To
Hey Bongo don't worry about anybody laughing. I got on a surfboard for the first time in my life a couple years ago in San Diego and had a blast!

You can rent a board and wetsuit (I'm assuming you'll be in So.Cal.) for a few bucks at surf shops along the beach. Just get out there in the water. The board will promptly throw you in the ocean for awhile, but after a half hour or so you'll be able to at least stay on the thing lying down and hang on as you ride the whitewater to the beach.

I didn't have enough time to really learn to surf, only had the board for a couple hours, but when I get back to California again I'm gonna hit it again!

If you're in No.Cal. you probably still can rent a board and suit in Santa Cruz and other places, but the water up there is COOOLLLLLLDDDDD.

I'm actually in No. Cal...gonna rent a wetsuit and a board and hang out in Bolinas (up in Marin)...waves should be babies, which is what i can maybe handle. We were out at Ocean Beach in SF the other day and I got really jealous watching folks taking in a few sets after work...

Time to learn another skill...I'm pretty psyched.

Got home a bit ago from taking a couple laps of the high school track for the Cancer Society's Relay for Life; my wife and step-daughter are camping out there overnight for the whole event. I wish all campsites had nice soft flat sod like the practice field I pitched their tents on.

Saturday, after they get some sleep, we're off to a crossroads west of here for a Finnish Juhannus (Midsummer) celebration. Good baked goods I'm sure, and a bonfire (kokko). Probably accordian and fiddle music.

On Sunday, my wife will be throwing out the first pitch at the Wausau Woodchucks semi-pro baseball game. Woo hoo, free tickets! Free beer, too???

stevehiker- I've been to Destin a few times. I'm driving to Pensacola today to visit relatives then heading to Destin Sunday afternoon. I mainly went to Pensacola growing up, so I haven't been to many of the other places in Fl. that much. Salt water and cold beer cures all ills.

RE: Watcha' Up To
Well, I had last weekend off so I worked all week and will continue through this weekend. NEXT weekend, I'm taking my girlfriend on her first backpacking trip. We're going to the Porkies for three days and two nights.

We've been training all week by hiking with the kids on our backs. I haven't been able to convince her to break in her boots. She sighs and says she knows she needs to. So, I gave her the scare stories of nasty blisters and having to crawl out of the woods. We'll see if they worked. LOL

I'll try to get her a pack of weight 25# but I definately won't go over 30#. We'll do about 5 miles per day with a pack on and we'll see if she feels up to dayhiking from there. If the weather is REALLY rainy, we'll stay at the campground on the South side of trails.

Wish me luck. I'm really want to have a local backpacking buddy. :o)

Hey Bongo -

I agree with you 100% about campmor..I was back east a few weeks ago and did not get a chance to stop in..REI is just not the same.

Another store in NJ that is pretty cool is called Ramsey's they are in Ledgewood. They have some pretty good transitional sales in between seasons if you can catch them just right.

I picked up that new tikka LED lamp there and some fuel after I flew into Newark.

As for me, I am mowing the lawn, planting some bushes, spreading some mulch and then sunbathing nakkid on my back porch. I am rebelling against tan lines once and for all!!

Just when you think your nest is empty it fills back up again. Just spent three days at Lake Powell with kids and sons in law and grandkids. 100 degree plus and a clear sky the first day. Stayed wet and in the shade. Next day had a few clouds. Had classy fireworks, hamburgers and sang Happy Birthday to the boyfriend (he has to be two years older than I am for two months teehee) and he blew out two flashlights. We got home midday and I have been catching up with this here computer. Slept for three or four hours on the couch and now I'm up again. Work tomorrow--I'm debating a sleeping draught.

Saturday, I spent in the mall... shopping... may need therapy....
Sunday (today), I spent the day hiking on the dunes/beach in gusty winds and solid rain... Only to arrive back at the trailhead to meet the sunshine!! I thought I was pretty darn smart to put everything in my daypack in ziplocs.. HA!! No wet anything for me!! Well... ok.. I sorta forgot about the red licorice I had in my rain coat... Yeah... the pocket that I left unzipped so the rain could fill it up ... and now I have pink/beige hiking pants....

Sunshine - A few words of advice for your GF - Dr. Scholls!!! (Blister Treatment, Callus Cushions, Mole Skin, etc...).. I remember all tooooo well my first backpacking trip with boots that I thought were "broke" in....arghhhhhhh....

Had fun surfing for the first time. Steve hiker--you are very right, it was a blast and all I really ended up doing was coasting on my stomach (a couple times I got to my knees), but I think I am hooked.

Ah well, if any thing, its MORE GEAR!!!!

p.s. the nor. cal. water is really cold! (even in a wetsuit).
