damn the man
rant of the day:

i was under the understanding that when you pay a little extra cash for a better product, the product should be better than average.

4 weeks ago i bought a new tent for approx $400 CDN. i have taken it on 2 weeekend car camping trips. while on these trips the tent was not really subjected to any crazy weather or other stresses, however, while airing out the tent yesterday i noticed that 2 of the seams were fraying apart.

this morning i took it back to the shop i got it at. she was really nice about the whole thing, i showed her the tear and she said that she would order a new one, and that i should have it by the weekend. perfect!

she called the manufacturer in b.c. and they said that they would not replace the tent until it was sent there for inspection and repair. they said that the tent would most likely be repaired and returned within 1 1/2 weeks.. fine.

i guess my real big beef is that i think that since the tent is still new, they should just send me a new one. i know that if she had one in stock i probably would have been out the door with the new one before she even called the manufacturer.

o well.. guess i am home for a couple weekends. sorry for the rambling but i am quite p!ssed about the whole thing.

Should have bought Moss(USA made), Mt. Hardwear, or maybe even Sierra Designs. A poor Canadian can't afford anything but the very best.

RE: damn the man
Isn't $400 CDN something like $2.25 US?

Hey Kid- I would put that one squarely on the retailer! They should provide imediate replacement and then deal with the manufacturer themselves.

In this day and age, with so many ways and places to shop, customer service and satisfaction is everything. You are entitled to it. As much as a quality product.

Be sure to deal with the owner/ manager, and not a clerk. If it's a chain outlet, a letter or call to the head office may be in order.

Who was the BC manufacturer?

RE: damn the man
the tent was made by outbound. i used a lot of their gear before when i was in sea cadets. the retailor is really small and would have replaced it if they had one on hand. almost everything has to be special ordered. she was gonna talk to the owner when he got in later and call me if they could get a new tent outa the deal.

RE: damn the man
Don't let up on them Kid. At the very least, you should expect a reduced price for the defect.

Outbound deals volume and could easily absorb the loss, or sell the returned tent as a 'second'. In my opinion, they are better at volume sales, than quality manufacturing

RE: damn the man
How much do you think it would cost the retailer to replace his front window if a bowling ball "accidently" fell through it in the middle of the night? This must be going through the back of a shop owners mind whenever there is a dis-satisfied customer. Don't be a push-over. Don't threaten, just don't give the impression that you would never consider it (or have "internet friends) that aren't wrapped too tight!
That's alot of dough and you shouldn't have to pay for someone's inept quality control.
Maybe Quality Control at "Outbound" posts to TT all day, right bacpac?

Damn the Gov-man
Wednesday, June 20
Canfield, OH - The family of a U.S. Army civilian contractor killed in Vietnam was billed $700 for shipping home his recently identified remains. Ronald Degnan said the Army should have paid for the shipping or funeral of his brother, Jerry Degnan, who died in a helicopter crash in 1967. The Army said the law requires contractors to handle the costs, but the contractor is out of business.

That is despicable! I would be ashamed to have to be the one to tell that man's family they have to pay for his return home! I don't think I'd do it. They'd have to court marshall me. No VA loans for Joy.

RE: damn the man
Avoid Outbound, Newcanuck - lotsa Canuck companies with better stuff - get a MEC catalogue. Don't despise shopping Stateside, Campmor, REI, etc.

Ditto on what raddy and BC said. REI will replace or refund anything! Even the more pricey local gear shop will do that for me.
