S'mores and other tasty delectibles...
How do you make s'mores? What about other tasty treats for kids while camping?

Well, it's not a delectible but...

My kids don't get enough dairy on the trail so I put powdered milk in the outmeal along with other good stuff. I add powdered Nestle Quick mix to powdered milk in a ziplock. When we get to camp, I add water, shake and pour into a cup. They'll drink that but they won't drink plain powdered milk. I also add powdered milk to instant pudding. Just add water and crushed cookies and you have a wonderful desert. Sorry these aren't especially nice but they work.

S'mores are tasty and easy! Heat a large marshmellow on a stick over the campfire. Place a chunk of Hershey bar and the hot marshmellow between two "halves" of a Graham cracker and smush a bit so the marshmellow flattens. Eat it! Very classic.

I assume you're car camping. If so, then the possibilities are endless for treats. I'd recommend getting a dutch oven. I've made brownies and pineapple cake out in the middle of the desert. Try doing a search for dutch oven recipes.

A friend of mine made a variation on the familiar theme - lorna doone cookies, lemon curd and a toasted marshmallow. Yummy and very messy, kinda like lemon merangue pie.

Hey dude! What about coring an apple and filling the hole with red hots? Wrap in foil and put it in the campfire. For more adult tastes, fill with butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and pecans.

More foil cookery: take store-bought doughnuts - the plain kind that come in boxes. Spread with cream cheese and cover with a smushed banana and/or chocolate chips. Heat in coals. I guess that one should happen near the car, since cream cheese really should be kept cold.

Biscuits - Get a stick about as fat as your thumb. Wrap the end and several inches in foil. Mix up biscuit mix that just needs water (or use powdered milk). Cover the end and up the sides of the stick about 2-3 inches up. Have the kids toast the biscuit SLOWLY over the fire. Rotate alot. (Think roasting marshmallows - only slower and farther from the flame.) The dough will rise slightly and then brown. Slide the biscuit off the stick. You should have a hollow cavity that will hold butter and jelly or butter with cinnamon and sugar, or butter and honey, or ...

Will these do? They were some of my favorites when I was a kid... (last week?).

I take cream cheese hiking--it lasts four or five days even in fairly warm weather.

we used to make those biscuit things, and we would fill them with pie filling. They are great, but require alot of patience.

Smores however are the all time best campfire food. And if your only going backpacking for a couple of days and dont mind extra food weight they ar awesome while backpacking.
