Surfing thread
Any surfers here?

So far we have Violin, Bongofreek and myself. Who else has hit the waves?

Actually I'm not a real surfer, just a novice who rented a board and wetsuit for a couple hours in San Diego a few years ago. But I had a blast! Similar with Bongo, who went surfing for the first time last weekend.

Violin you may want to re-post that pic you put on the Watcha Up To thread. That you?

I was just in HI last month, and all my friends went surfing at sunrise, but I went scuba diving instead.

But I can't stand on a skateboard without falling off, so I figured I wouldn't be much of a surfer.

The Outer Banks are a great place for wind surfing - something I've yet to try.

I'm taking the family down there this summer. KAWABUNGA!

It'd be nice to go hiking for a few days, then head down to the beach and hit the waves.

I grew up surfing as sort of a family thing. Of course, when I got about 16-18 years old I had to rebel against all such family endeavors. Now, I can't really go back, because you either or are not a surfer, and I am not confirmed as the latter. But, for all you guys just now discovering it I say go for it dude, it'll change your life!

Oh, I just remembered something that happened to a friend of mine while wind surfing at the Outer Banks.

He went waaay out in the ocean and fell off - at least 5 miles out because he could barely see the shore. He got separated from his board and a big gust came and made it cartwheel away from him.

He had no choice but to swim in. It took him hours. He was exhausted when he finally made it in. His wife got pretty freaked out when his board washed ashore without him.

Guess what he did the next day?

I'm sure I know...catching a wave, even on yer gut, will make you go out again and again...

It's like a good drive in golf, or crack, I guess...

I'm skert of the big water. I only go in salt water just above knee level. Sharks, barracubas, octopussies, squids, electric eels, sea monsters, crocolgators, wales, sword fish, ect. keep me close to land.

At the beach today.

Waves were great. Just body surfing and boogie boards today. We go to another beach to surf. I started last year. Figured what the hell - how bad could I be. Finally figured it out. I can only get up on long boards - forget the short ones the kids do.
Tomorrow night - fishing, water skiing and jet skis.

Anyway - I could never leave the ocean.

Check out www.lakesurf.com

Great Lakes surfing! Got to watch out for that ice shingling on Lake Superior, though.

I actually own a surfboard. It was sitting in my house when I moved in. Never tried it, though.

When I lived in Washington (Ft.Lewis) I had some Army buddies who were surfers from L.A. They were dying to surf so we hit the beach , it was Dec. by the way. They surfed,I made a fire on the beach. I met some other surfers who were talkin' up surfin' in Mi. I had never heard of it but they said it was great.

Sounds good bongo. Keep at it.

What type of wetsuits are you using? O'Neil and Rip Curl make suits for particularly cold water like in No. Cal.

P.S. Have you checked the Norcal group camp thread?

Steve Hiker--thanks for the tips on wet suits--I'll keep those names in mind while I am shopping. I have been renting at a local shop that seems to only carry body glove...but they've been fine.

Rockbuck--No way I'm trading in the bp gear, just buying MORE gear. You know it's really bad when you start looking for apartments closer to the beach...

On my way to the norcal camping thread after this...

An Australian man has trained three mice to surf small waves on tiny mouse-sized surf board at local beaches, according to Local 6 News.

Wilmot said the long training process to teach the mice to surf started with floating sessions in the bathtub.

He has made several mini-surfboards for his mice and said he takes the mice and boards to Gulf Coast beaches when he thinks they are ready for the waves.

Wilmott said he has never lost a mouse to drowning, and always makes sure he dries their fur and eyes when they get out of the water, according to the report.
