Corn Tortillas “Anyone know how long they will last in a bear cannister before they get all green and fuzzy? Do you think they would last 8 to 10 days? I found some de-hydrated refried beans(Fantastic) at our local grocery store that are quite tasty. since I really love Mexican food ...this is going to be fun!” 8:59:38 PM 6/27/01 RE: Corn Tortillas “I've looked for corn ones and have yet to find any...just white and yellow flour tortillas.” 9:37:36 PM 6/27/01 RE: Corn Tortillas “Yellow Flour??? I hope that's not like Yellow snow ;) are you sure they a'int corn? Our local markets have both.” 9:50:11 PM 6/27/01 RE: Corn Tortillas “I don't think they would last that long. I don't know how you would keep them from breaking but the tostado shells would work methinks. Unsalted corn chips are just fried corn tortilla.” 10:06:28 PM 6/27/01 RE: Corn Tortillas “Corn tortillas have been fine in a plastic bag for a week in my pack in kind of warm temps. You could also just take corn chips and mix the refried beans & salsa with them so breaking or spoilage wouldn't be a prob.” 10:35:43 PM 6/27/01 RE: Corn Tortillas “I just took the dehydrated refried beans and flour tortillas to Yosemite last week. They were the bomb!” 11:10:59 PM 6/27/01 RE: Corn Tortillas “I wouldn't try to make fresh tortillas last more than 4 or 5 days. Nigal is probably very experienced here...lets hope he chimes in. The corn chip idea is pretty good. You could practice flour tortillas from scratch with flour and water and whatever oil/lard is used. Find a recipe on the web and experiment. I made some awesome masa for tamales using a recipe I got off the web.” 2:32:02 AM 6/28/01 RE: Corn Tortillas “I find that corn tortillas keep quite well. I would feel safe with unrefrigerated corn tortillas for as much as a week as long as they were stored in a zipper bag with the air squeezed out. Phil has a good idea. Take a zipper bag of masa with you, and make tortillas or dumplings at dinner time. Actually, hand made masa tortillas taste much better than store bought corn tortillas.” 11:46:16 AM 6/28/01 RE: Corn Tortillas “to keep the tortillas from getting moist and spoiling faster, maybe you could store a little bit of rice in the same container. my mom always put some rice in with the sugar to keep it from getting lumpy--uncooked rice soaks up moisture. and i guess you could cook the rice then and eat it too!” 12:06:12 PM 6/28/01
