AmyG's Excellent Adventure!

“Well gang, it is time for me to say goodbye for the Summer!

As many of you know from my Dominicana trip report, I am completely in love with that island! The ecological research position I had pursued down there came through, so it looks like I?ll be leaving the country and heading back there for 6 weeks! Whoohoo!

I?ll be studying medicinal plants...learning from the locals, the ?remedies? passed down from generation to generation and then taking the plants into the laboratory to study their active properties.

If the plants can be proven as having medicinal potency then not only will I get my name on an excellent paper(hehehe) but also it will enable the land to be ?tagged? as valuable for its resources...thus protecting it. Yay!

Currently, the have identified several plants with ?activity? including an anti-cancer component, which is my area of semi-expertise.

It is such a beautiful place. I am happy to be playing a part in its protection.
Not to mention the fact that it?s a tropical paradise and work will be like play!

Speaking of medicinal plants...I did a search for Stinging Nettle yesterday to find out more about the cause of it's itchy rash effects...to find out it is also a good medicinal plant.
