I've been counting down the days too. I hate wishing my life away but I sure wish I could jump over the next three weeks. But, the truth be known, I need the time. I haven't even begun to dry food or pack for the trip. It's going to be fun hiking with all the new (and familiar faces). I sure wish we could convince Sarboy and Trailartist to change there minds about coming on this trip. SARboy if you're listening these days please reconsider. If I don't go up into the Miter Basin I was thinking about trying to climb Whitney from the back and then return back to Mel for more Llama Rama. It would be a day hike. I've been training all summer to be ready. Come on you guys! OM you're going to love this trip. And that high sierra air .. well it's everything you could dream about. See you in 28 days.” 9:36:45 AM 7/01/01 RE: california dreamin' “28 days huh? I'll be ovair in about 32 days, where'bout will y'all be taking out, and the date?” 3:25:24 PM 7/01/01 RE: california dreamin' “We are looking forward to seeing "youall" when you get here!” 5:52:14 PM 7/01/01 RE: california dreamin' “Know what you mean Solitary....i still have the food drying to do too.... 28 days ..... wow, i just realized....we will be experiencing a full moon...Aug. 4th.......ohhhhh boy! Actually tha's a wee bit too close to my move-in, so I'll hafta wait till the Cali car camping trip at the end of August.” 12:31:09 AM 7/02/01 RE: california dreamin' “.................whiiiiiiiiiiiiich is over 4 airs away, so for a one-day visit ............ that about ixnays that too .......... heyallfire” 2:59:17 AM 7/02/01 RE: california dreamin' “Youall? Youall, Phil? No Phil, it's ya'll. Better practice that before the Southerners arrive or you'll sound like a tofu munching hick. But at least your interpretation is infinitly better than the NorthEastern, youse guys. Have fun out there.” 12:54:59 PM 7/02/01 RE: california dreamin' “arclite, It's not "ya'll" you no count Yankee carpetbagger. It's y'all, a contraction of the word 'you' combined with the word 'all'. signed, The Society for the Prevention of Yankee Corruption of Southern Speech. I bet you would put sugar on grits too.” 4:41:53 PM 7/02/01 RE: california dreamin' “All my life I thought "y'all" was a good word and we westerners never had anything quite as good to replace it. However, no way am I going to use it out here! Another great Southern word is "fetch". We say, "go get that thing and bring it back here." Most people I know have never tasted grits, let alone know what they are. Menudo anyone?” 4:52:27 PM 7/02/01 RE: california dreamin' “When I lived in California I never could get used to people using "you guys" instead of y'all. Especially in mixed company, calling everyone a guy seemed really strange!” 5:14:45 PM 7/02/01 RE: california dreamin' “californians........y'all are way out yonder.......” 5:46:12 PM 7/02/01 RE: california dreamin' “californians..............y'all are a bunch of dadjim non-fetchin' freaks ...... hehehe” 11:46:46 PM 7/02/01 RE: california dreamin' “Now, nekid ....ain't you trans-plantin' to Cali?” 12:16:48 AM 7/03/01 RE: california dreamin' “dudes!!chill! we'll all be able to understand each other won't we? Y'allr just dudes.” 5:57:58 PM 7/04/01 RE: california dreamin' “nah, you got the accent all wrong, its "duuuude, come on by later and we'll drink some brewwwwssss"” 7:51:06 PM 7/04/01 RE: california dreamin' 9:05:00 PM 7/04/01 RE: california dreamin' “I was once married to a Floridian. I use Y'all, you all, and have eaten grits. With butter and sugar. Bitchen is still part of the 60's vernacular, I say that too....so does Phil...and I DO love menudo! My food is dried, my trip boxes are packed, my DEET is bought and my reel has new line. It's raining today in the High Sierra, and I have two wet tents from this last week out in the high country. I also have about a million bug bites. Not all is bliss. Can't wait to see y'all though. That WILL be bliss. Patience....” 10:42:45 PM 7/05/01 RE: california dreamin' “Aaaah--all those bugs should die before September.” 11:41:52 PM 7/05/01 RE: california dreamin' “Hey, Melsie darlin...need somebody to kiss the boo boos and make 'em all better?...” 11:44:34 PM 7/05/01 RE: california dreamin' “Mel - Did you ever find out about fishing possibilities the first three days out? Does Rock Creek have good fishing? After last weekend's outing I have a goal to lose a few pounds on my body and in my backpack. I am in good shape, but have never carried my pack up to 13,500 ft. before. It weighed 46 lbs, and that was just for a weekend!!!” 11:48:14 PM 7/05/01 RE: california dreamin' “Mel last year the bugs weren't too bad in late Aug./early Sept. Are they going to be really bad 22 days(!!!!) from now?” 12:32:33 PM 7/06/01 RE: california dreamin' “Phil.... I don't know much about Rock Creek, but I would assume the fishing can be good for pan-sized, with maybe some larger fish in the stream bends and under-cuts. Sol should get in some good fly fishing practice there, too. Phil, you lose anymore weight, we won't be able to find you. You will have NO trouble carrying 46 pounds over 13 grand. Hell, I was carrying 75 pounds up there a few years ago, and I'm a short, "sturdy" old chick. Sol, m'dear.... The bugs may well be a problem. The higher we go, the later the hatch. Anyplace where there has been a lot of horse traffic will have NASTY black flies if the weather turns hot. Cottonwood has a LOT of horse activity, but as we get away from there, the problem will lessen (if we HAVE a problem). Mosquitos will probably be out up high if the meadows are still wet. Just got to wait and see.” 1:10:01 PM 7/06/01 RE: california dreamin' “Mel - I guess we are just a pair of 52 year old hikin' machines! (LOL). I'm bringing my new mosquito netting. Weighs nothing and I hate bugs.” 1:53:51 PM 7/06/01 RE: california dreamin' “does it seem really neat to you guys that four of us going on this hike were born the same year? ...kewl the Be 52's........ jai ram” 6:40:24 PM 7/06/01 RE: california dreamin' “Be 52s -- I LIKE IT!!! Gimme a pen. I'm ready to sign those shirts!” 8:52:07 PM 7/06/01 RE: california dreamin' “We are the Geritol Generation. Has it also occured to y'all that between me, Phil, Om, Sol, Oldtimer, JVZ, Kent, Naviguesser, and Pepperdog that collectively we are nearly 500 years old?” 9:53:14 PM 7/06/01 RE: california dreamin' “500 sounds a little high to me...as if it matters!” 12:23:25 AM 7/07/01 RE: california dreamin' “Oops... More like closer to 400. You know I can't count past 10 if I don't take off my shoes!” 1:58:02 PM 7/07/01
