Obi has a date...... for car camping that is!
After talking with Obi, his suggestion was to come up with a date first then decide where. This is what we have so far (which is not much):

when: August 24-27

where: suggestions!--

Weaver Lake is one of them.

how: car camp with day hikes

why: get to meet other tt'rs and also....why not!?

Check your calendars and let us know!

Thanks for posting that, hikerchic... Weaver lake is just west of SeKi, not too far off the road, but you gotta hike in. I hear it's a nice setting, and also hear a lot of nice things about Jennie Lakes area, too.

If you can make the weekend, offer up your suggestion for a venue, post it here, and we'll go from there!

Great line-up there hikerchick, I'm purdy curious 'bout yore "why" category too, hehe. Count me in y'all, not the whole weekend sadly, but I'll be ovair for a day! Even if I'm packin in my then 3 yr old. When a location is decided on, lemme know how far it'll be from Vacaville, which is a bit NE of San Fran. Thanx, I cain't wait to meet y'all western TT brethren.

Fresno would be the nearest large airport. Seki is about an hour east of Fresno.
Weaver Lake is in the Jennie Lakes Wilderness
Area. Much to see if you have never been to the Sequoias before.
Sounds like fun!

Where would you actually camp? It takes some dirt road driving and a short hike to get to Weaver Lake.

I would love to join you, but that is our annual Forest Festival at Barton Flats near the San Gorgonio Wilderness and my daughter's birthday.

If you change the weekend, let me know.

I'm pretty iffy. I've been committed to a Shasta summit trip and a prep outing on yet to be determined dates in August. I'll stay tuned though and see if I can work something out.

Phil - never having been there, I assumed we'd camp AT Weaver, or, along the route of a hike which would loop by Jennie Lakes... seems you might be familiar with this, what do you think?

RE: Obi has a date...... for car camping that is!
I'm just looking at my "Harrison" map and it shows dirt roads that get you close to the lake then a short hike (less than 2 miles). No campgrounds are indicated.

Weaver Lake is in the Jennie Lakes Wilderness area, which makes me wonder if the dirt roads are even open to the general public. Generally motorized vehicles, etc. are not allowed in wilderness areas.

There are lots of campgrounds in Sequoia/Kings Canyon. For car camping I would think one of them would do. I would bring my daughter and would be looking for decent facilities...not rustic...even at the expense of a little privacy.

Dunk or someone could probably give us some ideas.

Suggestion 2: We could car camp at Davis Creek Park, Just south of Reno, and day hike on several trails in the area. Davis/Ophir creek trail up to the top of Mt Rose. Jones Creek and Whites creek loop trail. Just some ideas.

naked ape, sorry to hear you can't make it w/your daughter. Next time!

I'm glad I'm going to finally meet you Phil! How old is your daughter? If you think we would have better luck at Sequoia or Kings maybe we should plan there. What do you think obi?

tahoe, glad you can make it! Are there some good camping spots near water in that area?

windwalker, ladyhiker, and rockbuck, hope you all can make it!

snow nymph, are you going to make it?

bongofreek, moving, schmooving! Bring your wife along too! Wouldn't you rather be relaxing under the moonlit stars with good company, good food, with the moon shining on a beautiful lake?

Which reminds me. Since this isn't backpacking we can bring some good food! What are some of your favorite dishes for cooking at camp?

RE: Obi has a date...... for car camping that is!
hikerchic5 - I can only possibly make it if is another weekend (such as the week before). In my first post I mentioned the conflict on Aug 25. ( August 26 is my daughter's actual 15th birthday). As I have mentioned occasionally over the years, Debi has Down Syndrome and loves to car camp. She can hike short distances OK, but is very slow going up or down hills--some sort of vertigo thing I guess.

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression about Aug 25-26. I would love to meet you all.

Hey, hikerchic... I don't suppose I really focused on this point, but, I was checking out routes for a hike. You said "since this isn't backpacking..."

I can do either... but a "backpacking" hike was more in keeping with my original thinking... should be enough people that we can work out the logistics, but if the group prefers to basecamp, and do dayhikes, I can do that, too... How about it, people? What say you?

obi - There always is the possibility of doing both and let people participate as they can.

I am hoping to do a short car camping trip in August some time with my daughter in mid-August. A lot depends on whether or not my wife takes another trip to visit her relatives.

Can't make it that weekend. Starting the JMT on the 24th. Will try to make one of these trips.

btw, just got back (a day early) from western sierras bp (Bear Creek to Florence Lake). It rained all 4 days, bugs are nasty, it got old so we bailed.

The camping near this area is not really near water except for a few creeks, I like your idea better. Having never been there, I would like to check out some new ground. I would like to bp but a car camp with day hikes would suit me fine, maybe even better because I would only be around for the weekend. If there were a base camp I could find you all easier.

Hello all, I haven't been around for a while due to a couple of extended BP trips and work related travel.

I am interested in attending this outdoor festival and am open to the base camp or BPing options. I don't know the area, so whatever the folks that know think is fine with me.

RE: Obi has a date...... for car camping that is!
Just noticed this thread last night, between work and being in the mountains every weekend, it's tough to chime in. I'll be on vacation during the proposed time so will be unable to make the get together. Originally, I was planning on doing an 11-day trip in the Marbles with my friend Wrongway, but he had the rug pulled out from under him by his company and all his vacation requests for the year have been canceled. Now I'm looking into something in the Ritter Range.

SnowNymph, I did the Bear Ck to Florence a couple years ago. Next time I go back I'm hopin' to get into the Bear Lks area. Soaking in Blaney Hot Springs was nice. I was also stuck in the stormy Sierra's during the thunderstorms the last couple of weeks. We were in Hoover Wilderness outside of Bridgeport and for 5 straight days were rained on. Friday and Saturday were overcast the whole day with steady showers and absolutely no sunshine. The skeeters have also been pretty bad each of the last several weeks. Hopefully, next weekend in Lassen they won't be as bad.

RE: Obi has a date...... for car camping that is!
Dunk,
I want to go to Bear Lakes too. I've been to the area North, West and South of there. With all the skeeters during the week of the 4th, we decided not to do Blaney Hot Springs. Last time we were there we had head nets on and kept our bodies under water, then when we got out we had to fight them off.

Anyone doing anything Aug 18-19? I don't have plans yet, but its the weekend before we start on the JMT, so I want to be somewhere in the Eastern Sierras.

Snow Nymph, can I contact you through your website?

I actually have 8/10 - 8/20 off and was going to do an extended trip in the Marbles (N. Ca) Unfortunately my friend had to bail out but that opened up my options. Most likely scenario is that I'll do a 4-6 day trip beginning 8/10 come out and car camp for a couple days and then go back in. The 4-6 day trip I'm hoping to head up to the Rush Ck headwaters. I don't have any real plans for the end of the week but am open to suggestions. Anyways, I'll keep you posted.

I can go car camping on Aug 18-19 (actually 20 & 21 also). I was considering Sequoia NP, Dorst campground. Haven't made a final decison yet because I may be going camping with a church group that weekend.

I will have my 14 year old daughter with me. She loves to car camp, but isn't ready for backpacking yet.

SN - You really pack a lot into the weekend. Do you leave real early to get to the trailhead?

Dunk, if you do a 4-6 day trip, maybe I can catch you on the start or end of it. I'm not familiar with the west side, but can find my way. Did I mention it took 12 hrs to find my group at Bear Creek TH? Should have took me 5-6 hrs. I'll get a better map next time (windy dirt roads without signs for miles & miles). I can find anything on the east side, with my eyes closed.

Phil, I leave LA after work Friday, (between 7-9pm) and drive all night. Get up ~6:30am Saturday and drive to the TH. If I have to pick up a permit, I sleep til 7 or 7:30am. Once I'm on the trail, I'm fine. Dayhike Sunday & hike out. Sometimes stop at the hotsprings, get dinner, get home between 8-11pm, depending on what I do.

The drive doesn't bother me once I'm out of LA. I'm used to it. I love my weekends and try to make it last. Who needs sleep?

OK, it's time to revive this thread... I'm back from the Llama Rama (A great time!), but because of a huge rock slide in Yosemite, near Tuolumne Meadows, I couldn't get in the East entrance... sooooo... I'm sorta anxious to see if this Jennie Lakes hike is still generating enough interest to encourage those originally interested to continue their plans...

Hey Obi .......I'm pretty sure you can count me in for this trip! Are you planning on leaving from the Big Meadows area?
There are many primitive "no fee"
car camping sites along the Big Meadows road. There is a small creek behind the campsites , that is the only source of water up there, along the road.
