HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “Spent a long weekend in Harriman, NY, with temps hitting 100 degrees. We did the bulk of our mileage in the morning and spent the afternoon hiking from one lake to another, swimming and napping. Of course drank lots of water and kept an eye on each other. Question: what other precautions do you guys take in weather that is very hot and humid???” 10:54:53 AM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “now how did that happen?” 10:55:33 AM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “>>>>what other precautions do you guys take in weather that is very hot and humid???<<<< Stay in the air conditioning!” 11:06:24 AM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “Soak a bandana in water and wear it around your neck. The dryerthe air is, the better because the evaporation helps cool you off. Wear a good hat.” 11:26:46 AM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “We always try to change our route to hike in more shady areas.” 11:29:05 AM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “When the weather gets hot, I head for cooler climes. Have you tried kayaking in Harriman, m&m? There are plenty of nice lakes along Seven Lakes Parkway. That water is nice and cool in Summer.” 12:37:05 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “I do the bandana thing and also use a cut down clorox bottle to rinse off with in small streams (I use it also to pre filter) I was wondering about the salt/ potassium tablets that you might have in a standard first aid kit. Has anyone used them??? How do you use them?? before you start or after you start with symptoms. Even with my normal precautions, I got a killer headache saturday night - I'm guessing from the heat - and wondering if I was missing something in my system We were in the seven lakes area this weekend - went swimming ALOT. Beautiful, peaceful - no one was around. Even took a couple of naps. Only did 9m Fri, 9m sat and 4 sunday because of the weather. Stayed at high dry camps though to see the thunderstorms come thru. Nice lazy weekend.” 2:08:37 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “I just finished a 3-day, 175 miles bike ride with the first two days in 98 and 95 degree temps. I stopped and rested often, did the wet bandana thing, and made sure I stayed fueled - food, water, and gatorade - before I was hungry or thirsty. I also iced my head but I guess that's not an option on the trail.” 3:51:37 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “I just wait till Fall. Screw Summer.” 5:52:52 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “I have the wonderful blessing of having high elevation mountains available to hike in when it gets hot. It got down to near freezing at night last weekend in the Sawtooths. A gal from New York, a Rainbow family member, pointed at the snow on the high mountains, and said that must be white sand, like on the beach, because it was way too warm for there to be any snow left. Yeah, right. Go stomp on some of our salmon.” 6:06:31 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “Man, you are lucky. Humidity kills here it's so hot.” 6:09:42 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “m&m, the sunshine on very hot, sunny days gives me killer headaches, even with sunglasses. I'm in search of a lightweight quick drying wide brim hat that I can wet like a bandanna, and will still provide shade for my eyes. Try the powdered gatorade mixed in water to get the sugar and potassium you need when sweating badly, like pekka said about his Badlands trip. I have potassium supplements and I have had no adverse effects from them that I know of. You could try a low dosage and see how you do. Regardless, nine miles a day in that heat could be deadly to some people.” 6:32:56 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “LyndyS try looking at the hats at tilley.com they are sponsoring us on our big hike for cancer. they are uva and uvb protectant. they have a cool max liner and the fit is great. they also have a samll pocket inside for money and ID. the ultalite version is the one they are giveing us for the hike” 6:41:33 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “I looked at the site, MOM, is it the lighterweight t3 hat, made of nylon? It looks pretty good. Let me know how you like it.” 6:58:38 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “106 here today, I work in those kind of temps all summer. So even if it's warmish in the Sierras it's way better than working down here!!!!” 6:59:38 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “yeah - we do all that - except the gadorade - don't like the sugar weight and chemicals involved. In fact, dumped all our gaterade in Philmont. They gave us literally pounds of it. Anyone have any expiernce with salt tablets??? They are suppose to help with the potassium replacement. I have bad reactions to too many chemicals - ie: my hands, face and feet have swollen up when using dehydrated food for longer than 2 days. Thats why I always pack my own.” 9:58:04 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “I always hike in the summer in the Smokies when you get deep in the forest it is alot cooler. At nite quite cool. Just get up higher and it cools down. Hey also good hat is Nordic hats, they have the uv protection too.” 10:27:57 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “What walkindude said.” 10:29:37 PM 7/02/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “Two words......... Rocky Mountains. Here in Ioway we went from upper 90s and humid as h3ll, to my having to wear a fleece jacket to work this a.m. Bi-polar weather, man!” 12:07:40 AM 7/03/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “It has been years since I have used salt tablets. I hated them--made me sicky feeling. Get your potassium from bananas or raisins and your salt from chips or nuts. You want a little bit of something sweet when you eat your salty stuff. That is the idea behind Pedialite--for some reason everything works better that way. You may have been dehydrated a bit? I know I can get some killer headaches that way. Mary” 12:22:00 AM 7/03/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “Summer in the San Joaquin Vally, CA You know you're in the San Joaquin Valley when: You no longer associate bridges (or rivers) with water... You can say 110 degrees without fainting... You can make instant sun tea... You learn that a seat belt makes a pretty good branding iron... The temperature drops below 95, you feel a bit chilly... You discover that in July, it takes only 2 fingers to drive your car... You notice the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance... Hot water now comes out of both taps... It's noon in July, kids are on summer vacation, and not one person is out on the streets... You actually burn your hand opening the car door... You break a sweat the instant you step outside...at 7:30 a.m. No one would dream of putting vinyl upholstery in a car or not having air-conditioning... Your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death"?... You realize that asphalt has a liquid state... It's so hot in the San Joaquin Valley.. The birds have to use pot holders to pull worms out of the ground. The potatoes cook underground and all you have to do is to pull one out and add butter, salt and pepper. Farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs. It's so dry in the San Joaquin Valley... The cows are giving evaporated milk. The trees are whistlin' for the dogs. A sad San Joaquin Valleyite once prayed, "I wish it would rain-not so much for me, cuz I've seen it- but for my 7-year-old.....” 12:25:06 AM 7/03/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “Good post, Wind Walker, but do you get used to it? I can imagine a regional epidemic of crankiness. I've been visiting in Florida for a week and the afternoon rains have made the heat more bearable. Now my husband is sick, and he seems to only get sick in Florida, not at home in Jersey.” 8:20:02 AM 7/03/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “Windwalker, Living in Redding Ca. for a number of years I can relate. You forgot one thing; When your car doesn't have air conditioning the traffic lights are always longer in the summer.” 2:55:03 PM 7/03/01 RE: HOT!! HOT!! HOT!! “It's officially summer here in Vegas, the weather guy gave out three high temps today; 110 in the shade, 122 in the sun, 135 in the average car. Thankfully I have tinted windows, a/c, and covered parking!” 6:14:45 PM 7/03/01
