TT is my reality show

“What do ya'll, especially the other TT addicts... errr... regulars, think. I came here to talk about backpacking, but I stayed around because it served other purposes for me. I watch TV less than once a week and don't catch the reality shows. I think TT is my reality show... it takes the place of television.

At the campfire in June at MadRiver's property we talked about TT'ers the way some people talk about the people on reality TV shows, or characters and actors on the soaps. The difference was, we were pretty much on the same level as the people we were talking about. We aren't all "Great Americans" like AmyG or luminaries like Mel and Rad, but we are in the same show.

Sometimes TT may seem like a bad habit or an addiction, but at least its active and I'm involved it. OK so I might be out on my bike, reading a book, or writing, but I'm proud to be choosing this over the passivity and detachment of TV. I certainly like focusing on a world that I can be part of, rather than some TV world that exists at a great remove from me.”

We take 20 people, and have them hike the AT. Every week, one hiker will be voted off by the former O.J. Simpson jury.

“I think most of us cultivate a 'character' on this forum. Though we certainly bring a part of our personality to TT, this format is really one dimensional and most folks develop a shtick to make things more interesting.”

Part of the attraction here is the anonymity, which makes it easy to be honest.”

Reality to me is talking face to face. The written word can only convey so much. My BS-o-meter works much better when I can hear voice inflection and see facial expression. I much prefer human contact for the reality of getting to know people.

I have gotten good technique and gear advice here. There have been good trip reports and pictures of places that I would like to visit. This is a good place to arrange trips for what we all like to do when we get the chance. That's really why we came here in the first place, isn't it?”

I have been on four outings with TT people and had a blast on each one. #5 is coming up and I can't wait.”

The neighborhood takes on life when we meet others but it is great as is too.”

While LyndyS is very right, I have appreciated your attacks on bacpac. It's nice to see others are intolerant of his a$$inine behavior. However, having been married to an abusive man for 10 years, I am all to aware that attacks on personalities such as bacpac's are in vain. He feeds on people's reactions. Truly, he is not worth your time, attention and energy.

I do agree with arclites points about face to face contact vs the written word. I have had the good fortune to meet face to face several of the TT denizens. I have found them to be even more fun in person than on this forum. Believe it or not, Raddy talks more in real life than he posts here. LOL! ;-)
