Packing !!!

“Been packing all afternoon! My week is going to get real busy, so I decided to pack it up a little early. The weights look pretty good. My pack weighs 37 lbs.( 18.78 % of my body weight) and my son's pack weighs 27 lbs. (18% of his body weight) Still have a few little things to pick up and throw in but this will be pretty close to what we will carry. Not ultra light by any means ...but not to bad either :) That's an 8 day food supply and gear. We will pick up 8 more days of food half way through the trip.”

“Cool! I've been packing too, and I've still got 6 weeks to go. Will get the resupply in the mail next week. Can't wait!

“My brother-in-law goes fishing around Isle Royale every year. He loads his fishing boat on the Ranger III (ferry) and spends a week fishing around the island.

Today, he said I should go backpacking the same week he goes fishing. He'll meet up with me every three days or so and provide me with a fresh fish or steak dinner. I like his thinking on this one. :o)”

“I have been re-calculating my pack weight and adjusting my load. I had a whooping 46 lbs last weekend for an overnight hike! Must do better than that for Whitney.

Snow Nymph - what is your pack weight for a summer, long-term Sierra hike?”

“I'm doing better on pack weight, but needs more work.
5 day solo = 36 lb. (incl chair, Canon Rebel 35mm camera & film, tent and bear canister)
10 days solo = 41 lb (add 1 lb food/day)
overnight w/SnowDude = 26 lb (me) and 31 lb (him)
winter overnight solo bp = 38 lb (incl above + snowshoes)
2 years ago I carried 49 lb for 10 days (ugh)”

You get 46 lbs when you just throw stuff in and don't look at the weights. I weighed it when I got home!!!

I have been working on a new spread sheet and updating it with actual weights. I am using a scale that weighs accurately.

If I can go up Whitney with 40 lbs or less, I will be happy.”

We'll be on the JMT from July 14th to July 29th Tuolumne to Cedar Grove (Exit down Bubbs creek).
My permit says exit at Whitney Portal, but I think that might be a bit much ....we'll see.”

“Well, I did it. I'm off to the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness in Colorado for a week (six nights out)with five wacky women and one sweet man. I'll be home a week from Sunday.

At present writing the pack is 21 pounds but something is sure to sneak in there--it always does.”

Grab your pack and run!
If you leave them sitting around they gain weight! Mine is up to 43 Lbs. Glad I'm leaving in the morning , so it can't gain any more weight.

“Well I've been getting everything ready myself for a trip with my brother and our 6 kids, and I'm VERY AFRAID to even weigh my pack. Just a guess it's around 60#, for a 4 day 3 night walk in CO Rockys. But it's still half the weight that Strider made us carry on one of his famous ocean hikes. For those of you that has meet Strider in the great PNW, you know that everyone eats very well with the Strider. What a cook! But what the heck, planning and packing is half (ok part) of the fun. Just can't get that pack weight down, not with kids anyway.”

“We're packing too, the cooler and the lawn chairs this time though. Sunday morning running girl, boy and I are off to Ocracoke Island for a week of relaxing in the surf on desolate beaches. Hope the ferry ride doesn't take long. Yeeeeehaaaaaa!”
