That looks dangerous. HPD, you have too much time on your hands today!” 11:47:29 AM 7/23/10 “Indeed. Got things done ahead of schedule as usual, and am awaiting a call back from a client but nothing yet so, ... random thoughts galore” 11:50:45 AM 7/23/10 “i've been thinking about the concept of knowledge lately, and I kinda painted myself into a logical corner which has forced me to admit something I'd rather not admit. To the layman (IE non-scientist), a belief in scientific principles such as subatomic particles, dark matter, evolution, etc is based in just as much blind faith as a belief in religious stories. Here goes: I'm of a more Descartsian view of knowledge. I think that the things we directly experience may not be exactly like we think they are. Aside from the "I could be dreaming, having an acid flashback, or completel bonkers" arguments, there's also the fact that there are inhibitors in your brain that filter everything you experience... "tone it down" so to speak. So with this, you can't be 100% positive that what you see or feel is actually the way you think. I've always taken a three-tiered approach to knowledge. The first level would be "absolute knowlege" - things you know with 100% certainty. Descartes says there are only two things that fall into this tier: "I think therefore I am." It's a good argument. These things are beyond any doubt... and I sure as hell can't think of anything else that'd fall into this tier. The next tier is pragmatic knowledge. I admit that the chair I'm sitting in sure looks and feels like it's there... but hey, I could be tied up in a loony bin right now imagining the whole thing. I could still be asleep and dreaming that I'm sitting here working at my computer (shudder). But pragmatically, the things I see, feel, taste, hear and smell... I assume they exist. So the second tier of knowledge is anything you directly experience. Here's where it gets tricky. The third and final tier of knowledge (as I believe it) is secondhand knowledge. Hearsay. Things you have not ever directly experienced, but still believe because you read them in a book or were told them by someone. By these standards, anyone who hasn't seen subatomic particles in a microscope and yet believes in them is, in fact, following the same blind faith that leads one to deride religious people. You can say "the entire scientific community says that electrons exist" but I could argue that a hell of a lot more people could insist on the existence of a talking snake and an invisible man living in the sky. You could argue that scientific publications are fact... but that's the exact same thing as saying "It's true because the bible says so." The bottom line is, if your response to "how do you know that" is that someone else said it or wrote it... it's faith. Blind faith. This kinda came as a shock to me, because as you probably know I'm a very vehement nonbeliever with an unshakable faith in science. It's weird to think that all my strong opinions about astrophysics, evolution, and science in general have come from nothing more than hearsay and the experiences of others. Where it gets really ridiculous is if you follow my logic into other realms. The weatherman says a cold front is moving in... unless you're a meteorologist or have access to the right tools, you're believing this on blind faith. He may as well be saying "I saw cloud gnomes carrying buckets up into the sky - prepare for rain." If nothing else, this should show why philisophical thought is bunk when applied to real life Obviously, if you went by solely what sound logic dictates, there's not much of a point ever leaving your bed or opening your eyes. After all, anything you experience could be fabricated... anyhoo, that's my random thought for the day. It's been slow at work this week” 10:38:31 AM 7/27/10 “I hate touching my bare ass to the public toilet seat, so I always line it with toilet paper.” 10:43:51 AM 7/27/10 “I really don't think I could add anything to this of any consequence after HPD's post.” 10:47:49 AM 7/27/10 “I'm still trying to get the kitten image out of my head.” 12:35:27 PM 7/27/10 “ ”12:52:50 PM 7/27/10 “I like pie.” 12:53:53 PM 7/27/10 “...uh-oh, I think I got a little bone stuck between my teeth. Can somebody check and pull it out, please?” 1:11:00 PM 7/27/10 “I hate touching my bare ass to the public toilet seat, so I always line it with toilet paper.” HiGHPLAiNSDRiFTER 10:43:51 AM 7/27/10 sometimes i'll sit on a warm public toilet and think "ahhh, nice and warm"...then i realize why it's warm” 1:17:08 PM 7/27/10 “because i just peed on it” 1:23:53 PM 7/27/10 “The bottom line is, if your response to "how do you know that" is that someone else said it or wrote it... it's faith. Blind faith. Well, duh. Science describes a model - not necessarily reality - and no one will ever know if it is a true and complete description.” 1:41:04 PM 7/27/10 “or WILL they? ”1:43:12 PM 7/27/10 “That little bone is stuck pretty far in the back. You may have to lean over a bit. Don't worry, it won't hurt.” 1:50:02 PM 7/27/10 “ ”2:05:47 PM 7/27/10 “TT is reality. All else is just a construct of my imagination.” 8:00:11 PM 7/27/10 Jump to Page << prev
