“No, that is what happens when an eclipse occurs.

The reason the moon waxes and wanes is because as it orbits the Earth, different areas of it are in light and shadow. One half of the moon is always lit, but we only see the portion of the moon that is turned towards us.

The moon doesn't make its own light, it only reflects back light from the sun.”
