Photopoint dead?
Anyone out there been successful getting to Photopoint in the past day or so? I tried yesterday afternoon and got a page saying they were offline. Today, I get an error that says that the "Page cannot be displayed". I tried a traceroute and it times out after an unknown host after bouncing through a router in Canada. When I ping them, my request times out.

Has anyone heard of anything? Have any of you who paid up heard of a scheduled down or anything?

RE: Photopoint dead?
Perhaps they took the money and ran............

Perhaps someone with a grudge took out their server.....

Perhaps you don't always get what you pay for.......

Sorry, I'm a little cynical today.

Thought I'd bring this thread back up.

Anyone able to get into Photopoint.com lately. I haven't been able to since my return last weekend. Did something happen while I was gone?

I've got 1,999 photos in my photopoint account! I've got them somewhere on this computer, but not the captions. I started getting CDs this year, in case Webshots goes under.

I paid PP for 2000 photos, and when I got to 2,237, they said I owed another $9.95 for 250 photos (or they would freeze my account). Wish they would have said something at 2000. I had to transfer 237 photos to Webshots. I don't like the way they do business, but with 1999 photos, they got me by the .....

I quit them when they began charging. Not that the money was an issue, it just struck me as smarmy to start as a free service to rope people in, then, when they've uploaded tons of photos, spring the trap.

Shutter falls on PhotoPoint site

Special to ZDNet News
December 17, 2001 5:48 PM PT

Online photo site PhotoPoint has been unavailable for days, wreaking havoc with thousands of customers who store pictures on the popular site.
The company began referring some 1.25 million current and former customers to partner EZ Prints for printing and other services in a Dec. 7 e-mail message. The note said the shutdown was due to technical difficulties, but it left unanswered the bigger question of when, if ever, customers would be able to access their PhotoPoint files.

Executives at PhotoPoint and parent Pantellic Software, which acquired the service this summer, could not immediately be reached for comment. Web sites for both companies were unavailable Monday. A published company phone number listed as the contact for both companies had been disconnected.

The next headline will involve a bankruptcy hearing, you watch. I thought something suspicious was going on when they made sound like your account was going to be shut down if you didn't pay for an upgrade even though it wasn't true. I'm glad I didn't fall for it. I smell a class action lawsuit brewing.

Lots of sites that use tons of broadband width and need huge servers go down when they don't have enough revenue. Tons go down everyday. I'm amazed this site has lasted this long. Some day it'll go, too. Maybe sooner than we think.

Internet companies only stop service for two reasons.

1. Major technical problems
2. They get shut down

ZDnet news had an article on it in early December that said they were having "technical difficulties" but the published contact numbers had been disconnected.

Ah, you can't post links with bad words.

Cut and past the following into your browser. Where this site puts the symbols in front of ...edcompany... replace the symbols with the F word.

Ofoto
I just moved a few of my pictures to Ofoto.com. They're owned by Kodak so maybe they'll be around for a bit longer. As of yet they don't charge but if they do, I ain't wasting another dime on pay photo sites.

I was looking at reports on the web and it looks like Photopoint isn't replying to anyone at all. It seems to me that there is also a mass lawsuit in the works. Most people, like myself, are more upset about the pictures then the money.

Hold on to your wallets and put those pictures on a disk......

"To generate revenue, Web Shots plans to charge fees for some services. The rates have yet to be determined. Many services will remain free for the sites 13 million registered users"

I doubt if on site storage of your photos is going to be one of the "free" services.

Personally, I keep a generic web site that I have backed up on CD-R. If my ISP's server ever goes down, or worse yet, bankrupt, then all I have to do is merely FTP all my files to another server and away I go.

I also paid the 10 bucks to Photopoint. What was lost isn't worth the stamps it would take to chew the bastards out. It does piss me off however that a company can do that and get away with it.

Here's a guide to lots of sites that still post photos for free, and links to others (that may or may not charge.) At the bottom of the page is a listing of the many "casualties" of free picture posting.

Photopoint coming back?
This afternoon, just for the heck of it, I tried to get on the Photopoint site. They had a brief survey with a lame excuse but said they are trying to restore the site and give access back to any images that might be stored there. If that's the case take your pictures and run.

How does this sound for a plan? Those of us with valid accounts should go to www.photopoint.com and take their little survey, making sure we tell them that we'd be elated to pay $5.95/month for access to our pictures. Then when they grant access, we grab them and run! How would this be any different than what they did to all the people who paid for a year's worth of photo storage only to have them pull the plug?
kleetn

Sounds like they're giving us the opportunity to bend over and grease up. Personally, I'll pass. Of course, that's easy to say when I have multiple copies of all my pics, didn't pay for extra storage, and didn't really lose anything.

I fell for it the first time. Lost 2000 photos. Plus whatever was on my 2nd account. I won't do it again.

Still trying to upload photos lost on PP, but the captions are the hard part, plus putting them in the right order.

Has anyone noticed that it is possible to purchase their photos on a CD? Its $24.90+$10 for shipping. I am contiplating whether it is worth it for 170 photos.
adventurist

I gave them $19.90 already to store 2000 photos that only stayed up for 6 months. I won't give them anymore. I'll rescan if I have to.

I also paid $9.95 for a separate album that I started for work stuff.

I don't trust them. They took their message board down (probably) because of all the complaints.
