Photopoint dead?

“I don't think a lawsuit against PhotoPoint would be too profitable.

From their website:

As of December 14th, 2001, Pantellic Software, creators, owners, and operators of PhotoPoint.com were forced to cease operations due to financial reasons.

There are currently no plans to bring PhotoPoint.com back online, although we are always interested in discussions from interested business partners for doing so.

CD Ordering Now Available!
Due to the demand, as a means for members to get copies of their photos, we have arranged for them to be able to purchase CD's of their PhotoPoint accounts. As Pantellic is insolvent, this is being done through a third party. This offer will be available until at least April 30th, 2002. At this point, we will not guarantee it's availability beyond this point; it may be extended due to demand.”

“I didn't make this clear in my first post, but what I was thinking is that the point of a class-action lawsuit might be simply to force them to give their members' pictures back at no cost to the members. Of course, it takes money to do that, and you can't get blood out of a turnip.”

“You got it bp, plus not many attorneys are interested in a lot of work for 1/3 of everyone's photo's. If they wind up in bankruptcy court, the court may force them to make the photo's available somehow. But, if they don't have the money to keep the website up, question is "how could they do that?".

A class action lawsuit would undoubtedly force the issue of Bankruptcy.”

“I downloaded the Webshots' "My Photos Assistant" program when it was free. It looks like you have to pay for an account to download that program anymore. I hope it keeps working because it makes uploading photos a lot easier.”

“I'm wondering if the entire 'My Photos Assistant' program is a pay program or just the backup portion? The entire program was free a month ago when I downloaded it.

If the Assistant is no longer free, that is the only benefit I could see for upgrading to the unlimited version. The Assistant is great for uploading but I don't use the back-up feature. I create separate folders on my hard-drive for all my albums and also burn them onto CDs.

The rest of the unlimited version seems to be geared towards the webshots surfer rather than the album creators. I love Webshots and I have a hunch they're gonna be around for a long time. They survived when their parent company Excite went under.”

On April 7, 2001 I paid for a one year subscription for services to be rendered by Photopoint in the form of web storage for my photos.

Not only do these @ssholes have the balls to take my money for a one year subscription to their services and suspend that service just a few short months after taking my money, NOW they want to charge me even MORE money for a CD with MY PHOTOS on it. Just how gutsy is that? As far as I'm concerned, they can all kiss my rosy red buttcheeks.”

“I gave up on them when they started charging. Webshots has a business that that might work, with subscription upgraded service and a free basic service with ads.

I also like the Photo Assistant for uploading and the Webshots screensaver is what got me to pay $19.95 once about 5 years ago.
The gallery for download is awesome. Now, that is free for the full gallery, but with a limit on the downloads per day.”

“Most ISP's include as part of their subscription for no extra charge, a personal web directory with 10 mb. of storage give or take. That plus a good HTML editor and an FTP client, and you've got your OWN photo gallery.”

“I've got the webspace, but Webshots free version is nice and very convenient as long as it lasts. All my images will be backed up, either on CD or original media.”

“I remember when Photopoint was free, AND very convenient. And they also backed up my images. Then it wasn't so free anymore, and then they went tit$ up, and now they want to charge me even MORE money to give me the backup of my images. Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll maintain my own photo gallery, and my own backups.”
