Doggie Names
I have finally decided that I can no longer live without a dog. Next Friday, I will be headed out to the shelter with my sons to pick out my newest hiking compadre. Okay people, I need names, doggie names, that is. I know I will have to see the pooch and get a feel for the personality before sticking him/her with his or her new label but I would appreciate any ideas. Male or female. Thanks!

RE: Doggie Names
How about pindejo (peen DAY ho). It is a very common Mexican doggie name.

Of course if it is a good bpacking dog you could call it mountaindog and you two could be the mountainteam.

RE: Doggie Names
You would almost have to wait to see what kind of dog you will be get in order to give it a proper name that fits.

I think Jezebel(blue heeler)makes for a good name. I have know female dogs that have names like, tosh(malumute), cloie (jack russel), jenny (golden ret.), mimi(tea cup), harlow(toy poodle), sojo(rotty), saddy(mut), tipper(mut), sarabelle(yellow lab.), doobie(cocker spaniel), ellie(mastiff), amber(irish setter), quimby(blue heeler), casey(mut), sandy (collie).

Turk(viszul)sp, jason (golden), tank (boxer), gus(golden), kneesox(old english sheep), marley(old english sheep), brusier(jack russel), cody(yellow lab), hersey(choc. lab), midnight(mean) for male dog names.

I think "NO" makes for a great dog name!!!!!

RE: Doggie Names
A few years ago this guy in northwestern arkansas was working in his yard (he lived in a remote area in the ozark mountains) and his dog got a wiff of something and ran out into a thicket area and started raising hell. In a couple of minutes he ran out of the thicket like a bat out of hell with a bear on his butt, he ran past his owner, leaving his owner to try to out run the bear. He got as far as a tree and started climbing it but the bear went up it after him and took the bottoms of his feet off (his heal pads). You know that had to hurt. He stayed up the tree bleeding all over the place. The bear finally left and he climbed down, crawled to his truck and drove to a neighbors house. Be careful about taking your dog on the trail with you, you can't tell who he might piss off.

Named my current dog's name is Frankie...she's Queensland Healer and Dingo.
She has bright blue eyes...my wife likes the connection to Frank Sinatra (old blue eyes, for you younger types). She gets called frank alot.

I know another Queensland named Shasta and one named Denali

I always liked Lhotse (after a peak in the Hymilaiys)

Keeter is taken, so don't use that one. ;o)

A dog learns and responds better when you chose a name with 2 sylables and has a ending sound of: a, ie, y, er and so on.

IE: Flicker, Sasha, Blackie, Scooby etc...

Talk about e-persona!!

True Story, last month:

My CEO introduces me to an auditor. The CEO looks at me and says, "I would describe bacpac (not my real name) as brutally honest." Dead silence. I said, "It is singularly my best attribute and my worst fault."

I smoked the audit of course.

I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam. Even our CEO recognizes I am a wierdo.

I had a German Shepard/Irish Setter mix named Jennie and a Saluki named Jessie. My current dog is a Golden Retriever named Merlin.

I think I'll take a look at some maps when I get another dog and name him/her after a favorite trail or mountain if the name seems to be a good fit.

RE: Doggie Names
m-nuts what type of temperment or personalities do your chow/lab mixes have?

My gfriend thinks the father of her dog is a chow, the mother is a lab. The dog looks like a lab and acts like a lab most of the time, but gets a "chow" attitude at times when she gets a towel in her mouth or occasionally when another dog comes around.

Also the dog has a single black spot on her pink tounge, and we've heard chows have black tongues while labs have pink ones.

RE: Doggie Names
We got our American Water Spaniel from another family at age 5, and their little girl had named him Maxwell Smart as a puppy since Get Smart! was her favorite show on Nick at Nite. He actually lives up to that goofy persona, but he just goes by Max, which is way too common among dogs we've discovered.

Our sheltie, which we got at the shelter, was named Cassie, but we knew people with a daughter by that name, so we found a name that sounded like that and recognized my wife's Finnish heritage: Keksi, which means "biscuit" or "cookie" in Finnish, and that seems a good tag for a dog.

Our cat was born tailess and immediately got named Nip, as in "nip it in the bud" and "cat - nip."

RE: Doggie Names
Whatever name you choose, test it first to see how it sounds as a whisper, normal, and shouted at the top of your lungs.

It needs to carry far when you're calling him, not sound stupid in normal conversation, and sound intimate when you're scratching his ears or belly at the end of the day when he curls up at the foot of the lazy-boy.

My 12 yr old black lab is named Bruno. The wife wouldn't let me call any of our sons that LOL.

RE: Doggie Names
Well, most of these names are pretty cool. Since I can't seem to keep my happy butt off of Pikes Peak, I was thinking about calling him "Zeb", short for Zebulon. Hopefully he'll look like a Zeb but a hillbilly with a black tooth and a piece of straw hanging from his mouth keeps coming to mind. BAD THING! And for some strange reason. . .I can't get the name Wardell out of my mind.

Anyway, I plan on getting my beloved pooch on Friday but I may not be able to wait. I will be posting some PICS!!! I am so freakin excited!!!!
